The MPU battery, is it a rechargeable, does the board charge the battery? If I replace the battery with a remote holder, can I install 3 rechargeable AAs? Or standard AAs with a diode?

The original battery used was rechargable. If you want to use a non rechargable battery like three AA, replace the battery current limiting resistor with a blocking diode.
Better yet, swap the U8 chip to a NVRAM and then you never have to worry about batteries again.
Also, if you really do want to re-install rechargeable batteries -- the board is designed to trickle charge NiCad batteries. Do NOT use NiMH or rechargeable Lithiums, the recharge circuit is not setup for those and can result in fire.
