Hello,

I have a Bally Hardbody with the 6803. One display works normal the other has all segments strongly lit only on the 1st and 7th digits. All other digits remain blank with the exception of some commas randomly showing up. Depending on what text is supposed to show, the two digits will change to "0" instead of all segments.

Swapping displays has the same result, so I'm pretty sure it's the display itself. I've reflowed solder to all the pins going into the glass and the headers. also replaced u1 and u2 chips and still doing the same thing. Nothing looks toasty or shorted....

Any ideas what to try next? Thanks!

You can try this:
Remove Q20 and Q33 for the units digit and remove Q36 and Q35 for the millions digit.
If this removing solves the rest of the display, replace the transistors.
Most likely there are two transistors broken.

Thanks! I'll give that a shot tonight.

You are amazing! I took off the transistors you mentioned and other digits started working!

It looks like some digits aren't quite there yet. 4th digit is locked on with all segments and bright. The first and 7th digits seem to be missing? I'm assuming the first digit is missing because of the millions digit transistor we removed..? Would replacing the transistors solve this?

Thanks again!!

Yes, you are correct.
Now you need to replace those transistors you removed.
Maybe this will also solve the problem with the hundreds digit, but it is unlikely.
You may have to replace them too (Q21 and Q34).
The transistor parts are luckily not that expencive.
Q20, Q21, Q36 are a MPS-A42 transistor.
Q33, Q34, Q35 are a 2N5401 transistor.
Just order 5 or 10 of each (just in case).

Awesome, thanks again!

Will this work for the MPSA42? I have to get some stuff from Marco and they have the 5401 not an exact MPSA42, though. This one lists MPSA42 as a reference but not sure if it will work?

Yes, MPSA42 is good.

For the 2N5401 you can this one:

slochar found this thread, helping him repair a similar issue.
I've added this info and a link to this thread to the PinWiki here: https://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php/Bally_6803#.22Hot.22_Digits_lit
Thanks Peter!
