Quoted from Stoomer:Is that Grand Champion still Bruce? Answer: YES! lol
YES it is Sean! It's my *only* grail pinball that took over 40 years to find but better late than never!
Quoted from Stoomer:I definitely have project games from that era with the GC type, but none of those are apart right now. I'd assume they just changed the outer piece, and they attach the same, but I'll try to check it out later. I vaguely remember the STM one being a bastard to get apart...I'll likely recall more about it when I get it all in front of me.
Much appreciated.
Bruce
Quoted from wayner:From the mark on the front collar Bruce it looks as though someone has already tried to apply, what we call a stilson wrench, to the front collar. Have you tried doing this with protective cloth, while holding the inside fitting, to avoid any damage.
Not yet I'm afraid to break something that might be irreplaceable Wayne.
Quoted from wayner:I am probably wrong but the knurled fitting inside almost looks like a 'gulmite' fitting?? Ken Layton would know for sure.
It looks kind of like a gulmite screw but I'm not sure either. Here's a closer shot of it. I also found a Pinside thread about gulmite screws. https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/tamper-proof-boltslook-familiar
Sent a PM to Ken Layton about this thread.
IMG_20180607_205308355 (resized).jpgQuoted from Stoomer:You could also call Steve Young...he may have some insight on this - I know he's got games like this, and maybe has the parts manuals that potentially also show the breakdown of this assembly.
Good advice. I just called Steve and he told me the collar should just come out but may be rusted stuck inside. He told me to carefully tap the collar until it loosens.
Ken Layton responded to my PM with almost the same advice. Says to grab the inside bracket and keep wiggling, spinning it while pulling it inside the cabinet.
Will try both when I'm home.
Also Steve Young told me that this old style ball lift assembly would be in the online WMS 1960 parts catalog. (I've read this online parts catalog before but didn't think to check for this assembly)
Page 54: It looks like the "collar" is one piece that goes through the cabinet. No part number for it though.

Ahhh I see it now in the parts catalog.
This is one piece. (not two pieces like I originally thought) The "collar" is the part of the ball lift assembly that you insert in the hole from inside the cabinet. It will have to be removed from the inside so Ken Layton's and Steve Young's advice makes sense.
Got it. I learned something new here. Twisting and pulling the frame wouldn't budge it. I used a hammer with wood to tap the front of it hard like Steve Young suggested and it budged.
There is a thin metal ring inside the hole where this ball lift assembly goes through then it screws into the cabinet.
Good to know how to do this now.
I also learned something new about gulmite screws that I can keep my eyes out for, thanks Wayne.
Thanks for the help guys.
IMG_20180610_185316849 (resized).jpgIMG_20180610_185355150_LL (resized).jpgYeah. The "Ah-ha!" moment for me was when Steve Young told me to check that part in the 60's WMS parts catalog. Good suggestion to call him because I thought it was a mini "beehive" similiar to the beehive on the shooter rod.
Thanks to Robin and Pinside for making it possible to not only find the solution but to post it too.
