Of all the games that have come and gone, Bad Cats is one I really miss. It’s still with a friend but it’s another Python great that you don’t see often. It’s been 4-5 years since I’ve owned it and swapped my playfield here:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/bad-cats-refresh

This is my good friend 80spit Gerry’s Bad Cats that will get done with a new CPR playfield, new plastics and rails from taylorva

It’s in good shape so will tear down and replace as if I was my machine. Hoping to share the experience and findings with others. Karolina made an appearance to greet Gerry but quickly got stage fright. She reappeared later to approve of the progress. Don’t worry, Karolina will make sure it comes out nice. *wink*

I'm the lucky recipient of dmacy's last Bad Cats. Everyone asks me if it's new when they see it. It gets played all the time and my wife loves it.

Slowly getting there with some furry motivation. She really is interested in this one Gerry!

Photos of bottom rear to prep for rotisserie staging. So far, so good. Nothing obvious showing yet.

So Dave,
Stenciled cab or brown decal?

#13 15 days ago

Holy crap, you jumped right on that Dave, glad there are no major surprises. Started the cab tear down, strange thing, base cab was decals, head appears silk screened. I'm hoping to keep up with you on the cab restore, but I bet you will win, we will have a special surprise on this pin once done, will make it very unique. Dave does awesome work and am very thankful he took this on for me

Bottom side tear down is completed. More of the same: complete assemblies and all looks good. Need to tear down the assemblies to confirm, but otherwise they'll get cleaned via ultrasonic, tumbled, and then new sleeves and wrappers.

Playfield was polished up using Treasure Cove’s #1 and #2 followed up with Meguiar’s wax. I’m using blue painters tape on edges unless you like white dots all over your work place. I still find some in our basement after forgetting I’m not in my garage.

First batches of hardware are tumbled. For those that ask, I use Flitz. I’ve also used Novus 2 in a pinch but the Flitz seems to hold up and look the best to me.

I don’t understand how you guys keep track of where all the screws and nuts go. I’d have to polish each one individually so I wouldn’t get them mixed up.

I’m in awe that you guys just chuck them in a bucket and somehow figure out how it all goes back together.

I Always thought that too.

The truth is there’s a couple dozen types of hardware. Mostly they’re all the same usages across system 11 through WPC95 with some exceptions.

I really should put together a what screw/hardware goes where post. Other items like posts I take lots of pictures and often compare to other peoples machines as shop jobs over the years. Having done this title before and pictures helps.

#26 13 days ago

Had the supervisor watching over.

My process is to put The small parts in the tumblers as son as tear down begins. Two days with Flitz as mention before. How much: it’s a few squirts per load. No real measurement.

Hardware gets placed in bins after this. It’s a PITA, but keeps the parts organized and you’ll thank yourself. This crappy HF bin sucks because the dividers have An “L” on the top and often catch when grabbing parts out the wrong way. I prefer the HF bins myself like I use for spare parts. The bins are also helpful when your supervisor decides the pop bumper springs are loose and decides they’re a toy. True story!

Note one of the posts is broken so have it and a spare marked with painters tape so I order more than just one. Also most of the threaded posts broke in the T nuts on tear down. No big deal, I keep new ones since this is pretty common on System 11’s. I already trashed the broken ones and have new ones in bin ready to install.

Taylor’s taylorva rails installed. They look and fit perfect as always. I did have to open up the top side T nut holes to allow the barrel to fit in the playfield. This isn’t from the rails but the CPR holes were a bit too small for the t nuts I have. 7/32” drill bit opened them up. The originals if you reuse may work fine, however I use new ones. There’s 5 total top side 8-32 T nuts.

Pop bumper bracket screws. Fins came out but I prefer twist shank in the event you’d like to remove them without the chance of chipping wood. I used black ones here to go with the black edges. Note this playfield didn’t come countersunk.

So had to open up the holes a bit and then counter sink. I still finish up with my hand tool. Just gives a better finish for me. In this case the holes were ever so slightly too small. So running a drill bit in the size needed backwards was all it needed.

Using kruzman kit again. It’s really gets used on any swap you do. So finished off with the glue and tapped them in.

The posts are a hair small too. Same method as before but different bit. Using Ron’s kit with the metal drill gauge is handy. If this was a wood screw I’d use the next size below. But in this case the 3/16” bit does the trick.

Hinges are on and use the special course and slightly longer screws. Will have more on the common wood screws later. I’m retort sure these screws are also used on a lot of Sys11-WPC95 cabinets too.

T nuts are done on the under side. All are 6-32 and 32 total. And the 8-32 front top that hinges used and 5 total. Get them in excess. You’ll use them again.

Wire guides: Here’s my method. I use Ron’s drill gauge and use that size bit. I follow up with just the hand countersink tool as they’re really small and I only want to take a small amount off. Follow up with the glue to lock it in. Than carefully line up both ends before you two them in. Sometimes I have to tap the ends with a rubber mallet or spread open/close and to eyeball so they line up perfectly. It’s really easy to just whack them but trust me take your time. They’re usually at obvious areas. Generally I target tapping them in until they bottom out at the bottom of the playfield.

Parts cleaning in progress. Flipper mechs will get converted to Fliptronic style. New coils labels will be installed on all coils.

I use a hefty splash of simple green and distilled water in the ultrasonic.

Hennessy and simple green! Yum

#36 11 days ago

You haven’t lived unless you grew up on Green Stamp Christmas’s and PA welfare with alcohol. I’m kidding about the alcohol; my parents couldn’t afford to clothe us yet alone buy booze. Friends have brought all sorts of weird alcohol over the last several years so now wondering if they tried Hennessy shots with Simple Green Tom!

Lamp boards are installed. I use a drill stop and punch to prep after confirming the dimples are correct. I check my drill stop regularly. They do walk.

Playfield posts are installed. To keep this playfield swap a little different from red, went with: orange star posts in the lower visible areas, red behind the targets, and a few amber. The plastic lane guides I went with orange to match the theme vs. red.

Cliffy sleeves and flipper guides aren’t here so they’re not installed. Titan white rings will be used when they arrive.

Pop bumper skirts: white is boring. I was considering yellow or orange. I put on orange unless 80spit wants to change. I’ll also light up the third bumper and using orange or amber caps.

New ball trough metal installed as the old was rough. The newer style has improvements with the “check valve” wire and extra support for the top side.

And new ramps!

Ramps dissembled. Need to drill out the rear two flasher rivets. Front one is just screwed in. Will make the rears screw in as well. Drying the wiring for the ramps. Will get new switches and bulbs. Assuming 80spit will want incandescents?

Here’s the decals installed. There’s a bunch on the tiger ramp and just the one in the seafood ramp. The new ramps weren’t available when I did mine but these are thicker and look like they will fit well.

Mechs are coming together. Went with the new sling hinged parts. The old ones had a lot of play.

Flippers were rebuilt with new rebuild kits and are converted to the WPC spring return setup. I use new solenoid brackets now when sling the system 11’s and removing the conical spring. They look like crap over time wearing the circle hole in them. Even worse when you remove that spring and the tabs, etc.

Dave
If you are referring to the flasher bulbs, I have plenty of Led flashers I can get some over to you, just let me know how many and what style, Playfield is looking awesome, cab is coming along, almost ready for paint, found a nice set of new mirror blades for it in my stash too, Great work buddy

I will have a count for you soon. Sounds good on the cabinet! Shouldn't be much longer here; few weeks or so.

Quoted from 80spit:

If you put in only LED flashers then 3C/4C/6C/7C will flash with flipper activation. I believe you can fix this by putting a single incandescent bulb somewhere in the chain. You can also modify the auxiliary power board by removing some diodes and putting diodes across the solenoids. There is a thread about this on this site.

I really screwed the pooch. I missed this broken stand up. Going with all new now. Action Pinball has the target decals if you’re in need.

Karolina was supervising the mech parts being wrapped up. She reamed me into a new one about missing the target.
