Should the glass be tempered? Or only the playfield glass needs to be? The reason I ask is because I can get the backglass for $24 regular and $64 tempered locally. What do you think?

I just went through this and unfortunately will be doing it again, long story......... I paid $17 locally for tempered glass.. Called them with the dimensions and picked it up in 30 minutes..
I think I'd like to hear the long story, and $17 for tempered? Sounds like a great deal! Good to hear it doesn't have to be tempered.

BriGuy, I think that is the long story... It's a tear jerker.
I picked up new playfield (tempered) glass locally and it was $45 so the price they are giving you seems high for a backglass.
Just got a price on tempered 3/16" playfield glass at 47.00 USD tax included, and delivered (at their convenience).
The reason for tempered vs regular plate glass is for safety reasons. If it's going to be in your home and you assume responsability for safety, you can use plate glass. Tempered glass, when it breaks, shatters into very small pieces (as many of you know) that is basically harmless and can be cleaned up easily. Plate glass, when it breaks, usually shatters into large sharp shards.
Tempered glass is also more brittle and stands up to abuse better than plate glass. You also may know that your tempered glass, when inside the playfield guides, is very strong and can take a lot of abuse. But, when it's outside, you can even rub it the wrong way on the edge and it will shatter (experience talking ).
The company I used to work for actually put plate glass in a few machines that were being sold for home use. The buyer was notified when they purchased the machine so they would be aware.
