Why do most micro switches have 3 lugs, when they are basically a single pole-single throw switch?

Common (C) lug is the center lug then? With no diode (C) and (NC) should show continuity when SW is not activated, and (C) and (NO) should show continuity when activated. Which lugs are (NC) and (NO)? How would the diode come into play on this?
