Yeah, looks to me like a dead CMOS battery. Should be an easy fix to replace it. If you connect a usb keyboard to the computer you may be able to get past that and still get the game to boot.

#18952 3 months ago
Quoted from Rum-Z:

my R&M won't boot up and is just stuck.on this screen. I'll contact Spooky about it tomorrow. In the meantime, any idea here? Is the CMOS battery dead?

I helped someone with a Halloween that had a similar issue. Turned out (in his case) the SSD wasn't reading properly. He was able to fix his game by getting a new drive. With R&M it's a SATA SSD so it's also possible just plugging the drive into another SATA port might work.

I highly recommend all Spooky game owners purchase new Name Brand (samsung, crucial, etc.) replacement SSD. Duplicate your game drive and swap to the more reliable SSD. Keep the original in your parts box as a backup.

Yep that was me - thanks again! The onboard SSD interface actually broke in the PC so it couldn't see the SSD drive anymore (which itself was still ok), so I had to use the spare sata SSD bay instead (had to buy a sata SSD drive as its a different interface, but it wasn't expensive).

This looks a little different in that it's not just going straight into the computer's BIOS ie not finding a boot device - so it's probably just the battery in this case.

I totally agree though it's worth having a backup of your game image on a spare drive, it's an inexpensive and fairly easy thing to do.

Did you try plugging a keyboard into it and hitting F1

There are specific steps to follow here if your battery dies and you replace it.

#18956 3 months ago

Wow, so with one computer type you have to manually jumper 2 pins to get the PC restarted, and with the other type you actually have to re-image the software? That's pretty full on for simply replacing a CMOS battery.

#18957 3 months ago
Quoted from WizardsCastle:

The main reason for me, is that I don't think R&M shoots great, and I don't think it has enough depth in rules.
Remember, this is just MY opinion on it.

Man, I couldn't disagree more (about the way it shoots). It's a tough shooting game and many games weren't dialed-in from the factory. When I first got my game, it shot less-than-great (no argument). After several weeks/months working out the kinks with many other owners, the game shoots great. Some of the combos are just so gratifying. A tough shooting, fast paced game doesn't need deep rules...TRON is another very tough shooting game that has a fairly modest/shallow rule set. Still an adrenaline rush to play.

OTOH, you have a game like GZ that everyone loves partly because the ball times are long and it makes them feel like a pinball wizard. For games that commonly take 20 minutes to play, you need a deep rule set. For arse kickers like RM/TRON, you are lucky to play for 5 minutes

Not yet. I don't have a USB keyboard at home. I'll grab one tomorrow when I'm back at my office.

Should the battery be replaced before it actually dies to avoid this altogether? Just replace every couple years?

How do you proceed to copy all files to a new SSD? Does it work just by putting Eric's file on it?

I have asked this a few times and even asked spooky, can I replace my battery with the game running and not have to play with the drive.?

Thanks

Has Spooky not provided a response? If not, you could try checking the manual to see if there are instructions in there.

#18964 3 months ago

Spooky thought is was ok I did not get a yes for sure response .

Ok I just changed both r&m and acnc.I used 5/8 4x shrink and just pulled the old wires off the cell and placed it on the new cell
Then shrunk them and checked voltage both games running and all is good!!

Ps:the voltage on both games was over 3.0 and both were name brand Panasonic cells.

#18965 3 months ago

I also put a date stickers on both game for future owners!

There definitely needs to be a 'how to' video on youtube, so that people don't screw game up doing this!

An easy option for dealing with the jumper is just have a 2 pin jumper switch. (amazon.com link »)

Yes you can with the game running, I did mine a few months ago. Im used to working on servers and such and its just a motherboard. Just be careful not to touch any other metal other than the battery on the board or you will probably blow something out. I've burned the tip off of pliers before though so its not exactly safe, proceed at your own risk.

Great idea. Would be nice to be "ahead of the game" in a possible drive failure.

There are options for creating an "extra" better SSD for your game. First, the second drive needs to be at least the same size or larger than the original installed in the game. I believe the one in my game was 128GB but I got a 256 for the replacement.

Then for setting up the disk you can use Eric's rebuild image but you will lose all your high scores (unless you load those separately with a USB drive from a backup like you get when you update the game). The way I recommend and went myself is to use a Linux Utility that is on (or can be easily added to) MOST computers (Windows, Linux, and Mac) called DD (link below to instructions). Finally, there are other ways to CLONE or duplicate a drive that might be simpler (less command line) on your computer that is just a simple google search away. There is even a SATA drive cloning devices you can get if you want: amazon.com link »

I know the code is done regarding new content.

Still maybe small tweaks if they add to fun?

I kind of feel that Meeseeks Mania needs a 'boom' if it can be completed or a way of getting a huge super jackpot?

If this in already in the code, I wasn't aware of it.

It's the Jerry target after you drain to your last ball. If you miss, you get the "Loser" whisper and the associated clip. If you hit it, you see the Jerry clip.

#18975 3 months ago

Ah thanks, I wonder if that applies to the Asrock board as well. I never saw this since the image isn't mentioned in those instructions. Guess I could just try it at some point with a new drive.

Not entirely sure why, probably the flavor of Linux they use, but the Asrock system doesn't need to be reimaged upon battery replacement is all. The image in the other one is a FULL image of the game so its a good thing to have sitting on a drive somewhere just in case. I have a spare drive AND a copy of that file. This game it too important to my daily recreation so I won't risk it.

#18977 3 months ago

Well, no luck yet. I hooked up the USB keyboard, went into the BIOS settings for the CPU pictured on the left with the exposed coin battery (battery has been replaced), and successfully followed the instructions for changinh BIOS settings all the way down to #7's second part.

On #7's second part, it says "Verify the boot device is set to Spooky". I see no option for this. So not able to do that, I save and restart.

Now the machine boots up to the BIOS setting screen every time, whether I have the USB keyboard connected or not (as shown).

Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I haven't actually done this procedure before on this game, but I am guessing I will need to fairly soon. What they mean by "Verify boot device is set to 'Spooky'" is you should be able to choose the primary boot drive to the one with the game, the drive is called "Spooky". So, you should be able to go to the "boot order" section and change the (probably second or third) item that currently should say something like SSD or HDD or Hard Disk. As it stands with it set to the default it is not sensing a boot device and just going to the BIOS. Hope that helps.

Did anyone confirm if it is safe to change this battery while the game is on? I am replacing my flippers and giving the game a thorough (tear down) cleaning while I am at it. Figured I could change out this potentially problematic battery too.

#18979 3 months ago

Hmmm... under the "Boot" section I only see a "Boot From Onboard LAN" option which is currently disabled. Enabling it results in it searching for media, and then a result of "no media found".

#18980 3 months ago

I think there's a problem under the Advanced tab, in Storage Configuration. Under SATA3_1 I see a "Not Detected". I think this should show a storage device.

#18981 3 months ago

I figured it out. The cable to the PNY storage device became unplugged at the "Z" connector. Success!!!

I pulled the playfield out yesterday (after the battery died), and I felt some mysterious resistance when doing so. While pulling out the playfield, I was pulling on that connector somehow and unplugged it.

I successfully swapped my battery with the power on about a month ago to hopefully avoid these issues.

The jerry bonus depends on the points you score during the multiball.

#18985 3 months ago

Thanks everyone for the BIOS reset tips. I was going to change the coin batteries in all my "modern" games at the first of the new year, but R&M's coin battery clearly didn't make it that far.

What size replacement battery is needed?

#18988 3 months ago
Quoted from Eric_S:

What size replacement battery is needed?

It was a CR2032. My R&M has the Asrock CPU where the coin battery is easily replaceable. I think the first 80 or so R&M builds have a different CPU where the coin battery attaches via a red and black cable and connector. I don't know what size of battery that different CPU takes.

This is why we need a good rule sheet!

Virtually every other game has one, not sure why this hasn't?
