    Quoted from vid1900:

Here is a page from Paypal's original site.
    No fees.
They made their money off of the interest on the Float of everyone's cash sitting in their accounts.

This is exactly how it still works. Only merchants pay fees, which they said would be added in that listing. They were very clear that it was only free for consumers.

I'm not a Merchant and they charged me a fee to send money Friends & Family from my debit card.

I like Paypal. Been using it for years with no issue. I just sent a member here yesterday quick easy payment for a item without the fees. Some people don't remember the old days of sending a check and hoping it doesn't get lost in the mail and the seller holding the check for a while to verify funds.

My first paypal account was barred from sending or receiving "gift" payments (the precursor to "friends & family")

About five years ago, they told me they were going to limit my new account. I told them the payments were genuinely from friends / family, and threatened to stop using PayPal entirely; they never said another word about it.

Which has been true at least since I joined in 2000. There is no fee if your checking account is used. Really, they can't be expected to provide you a free service, and pay the debit card fee for you.

    Free is free

If they are making money off the float

I will continue to use Paypal for smaller transactions. Selling an arcade or pin... no way.

I try to avoid cliches like the plague.

People in the 1300's were trying to avoid the actual plague. Good thing PayPal didn't exist then.

    It did.

They just did not have antibiotics back then like they do now.
