Quoted from Aurich:This to me is the most interesting comment of the thread, at least as of this moment it has 15 upvotes and nobody seems mad at it even though it's pretty derogatory towards a game that's been popular. Looking at the names it's not just the usual JJP boosters upvoting. I've seen the sentiment in other threads.
Both feature hand drawn art, in a similar comic-booky black line style. The main 'interactive toy' on both games is even exactly the same, which is just weird. Spinning discs are hot now. Avengers has a decent sized LCD, it's no longer JJP's screen vs red DMDs. Avengers has 3 flippers, the clear subway, cool ramps, plenty of wireforms, it's not "cheaped out" by Stern standards.
Yet people think Avengers looks like a toy, and I'm just curious what prompts that really.
Is it just that JJP really went all out on GNR? Or is there more to it than that?
I have seen and played both AIQ and GnR, here is my take about the toy-like look of AIQ vs GnR: Too me, it's more of a Stern vs JJP and not just AIQ vs GnR.
It's the extensive use of flat plastic art that Stern uses to achieve their "look" and their primary visual focus to present a theme, versus JJP using more 3-D sculpured elements (guitar heads, catwalk ramps, skeleton Axl Rose, stage lighting, Wonkavator, Black Pearl, Dorothy's house, etc.) The only two lately that I can think of where Stern stepped away from the flat plastic art dominance is JP (T-Rex) and BKSOR (Black Knight). However, even with JP & BKSOR other playfield design elements went to the flat plastic look (guard tower on JP, upper playfield catapult on BKSOR). Heck, even when Stern does put a nice 3D sculpture on the playfield it's usually on the LE/Premium and on the Pro those are replaced with flat plastics. Seeing a playfield dominated by flat plastic design elements versus 3D sculpture design elements is what makes Stern look more toy-like to me when compared to JJP.
In terms of playfield art, both AIQ & GnR are phenomenal.....considering the constraints ZombieYeti was under working alone with limited timeversus the extra time with multiple artists I'd give the nod to ZY!!
