Our climate of hatred creeps in.....I hear it from a few young family members that live on 4chan and 8chan.

A shame that brainwashing hatred, is now an educational art form of propaganda.

Quoted from gdonovan:

Thats just rude.

Standing up to racism and sexism isn’t rude. Empathy should be the normal human default. You choosing the side you’re choosing tells us all we need to know about you. I’m comfortable with being on the right side of history and humanity.

Quoted from gdonovan:

I'd like to hear your thoughts on a trans gender "Wonder Woman" or a white female Black Panther.

Oh yay, bigoted contrarianism for the sake of trollish arguments & theoreticals that don’t exist! Peak internets!!! Ok, I’ll bite....

There’s no lore or story reason for Captain America to be white. There’s no lore or story reason for an Asgardian hero to be male. Same reason we can have Miles Morales or Spider-Gwen: anyone can get bitten by a spider. Wonder Woman comes from an island of women. Black Panther comes from Wakanda. Their identity is part of their story.

You just insulted a board member for having a preference in an action hero as written originally.

Am I a racist for preferring James Bond as a white, British male?

How much are you showing calling a board member a klansman?

Just as much Thor and Captain America I'd argue right back.

Newsflash for ya, I don't like Luke Skywalker being portrayed as a loser who gives up either. Its out of character. Disney can jerk around the characters that have been established for decades, that doesn't mean people have to like them or go to their movies.

So much false equivalency. You pass Troll U. This will just keep going in circles, so look - Yes, you’re racist. You’re being super open about it, why get offended when I put a label on it? Own it! Just watch your old white people movies on VHS at home, stay away from the scary diverse planet you live on & be happy!

Yes. What a dumb question. You do know black people live in the UK right?

Idris Elba has been a long fan favorite pick to play Bond, probably not gonna happen now, but it would have been rad.

Seriously, that's your argument? This thread is really turning to shit as the racist dipshits come out of the woodwork suddenly.

Black people have lived in the UK for centuries which has nothing to do with the character Ian Fleming created.

Would you be this excised if a movie about Martin Luther King was played by a white guy?

I would; MLK was black and should be played by a black man. That is who he was.

Hilarious. I'd give dad a call if he was alive, son of a black man being called a klansman is damn amusing.

So much empathy you are displaying, somewhat hypocritical there buddy.

I'm for seeing the characters portrayed as they were conceived, written and portrayed for decades regardless of their race nothing more. To each their own.

Look, I get your opinion and your argument. I have read it and heard it over and over......hundreds of times.

No one is saying you cant have an opinion, your opinion, exactly as you feel.

But you chose to bring it into this thread, with a planned rebuttal for the purpose of trolling.
It is very obvious.

Let it stand, but please dont bring this canned divisive rhetoric into a discussion thread of positive nature any further,

You said it, we get it.

No trolling.

A board member was insulted for nothing more than defending his choice and then it was insinuated he was a racist.

RDJ isn't going to be making any more Iron Man movies, you going to level a similar charge at me when they announce his replacement? RDJ does a great job even though he is aging out and is expensive as hell. I'd love to see one more IM with him in it, the guy nails the role.

The mental gymnastics you’re going through to justify your racism is bewildering. This statement is so offensive, ignorant, and deplorable. You’re comparing a FICTIONAL CHARACTER who’s race is irrelevant to a civil rights fighter who was murdered for being black. WTF is wrong with you? Oh yeah - racist troll. Please just stop. But you’ll keep going.

Was Alexander Hamilton a fictional character?

Is "reverse racism" (not sure why you put it in quotes, but whatever) okay? Asking for a friend.

#267 14 days ago

Wow, this got ugly.

Personal opinion: if the character's "identity" is central/critical to the character (Wonder Woman and Black Panther are good examples), then there needs to be a compelling reason to step outside that identity.

Case in point: several years back, I saw an excellent stage version of "Othello", with the character of Iago played by Sir Patrick Stewart. "WHAT?!?", you say. Well, it was billed as "photo negative", as the entire rest of the cast was people of color. (Stew was _fabulous_, BTW.)

OTOH, "being a white male" is _not_ central/critical to either Cap's character or Thor's character. You are free, of course, to decide whether or not to watch a "diverse" casting of those characters, but such casting would not be (IMHO) antithetical to the characters themselves.

It's in quotes because it's not a real thing. It's a thing white people rant about when they don't understand how racism is systemic/institutional & all the many layers of context behind it. It's something racists like to whip out with all their other what-about-isms and false equivalency "arguments".

Another neat write up on Time Travel in Gizmodo today...

I did not know they used a Quantum Physicist, Spyridon Michalakis, for consult....but certainly with Hollywood Flair....

I still cant wrap my head around this at all.....

Saw Timecrimes, it was decently entertaining, especially considering they probably spent more money making Captain America’s shield for the Avengers movie than the entire budget for this one.

God I would love to see Idris as Bond. What a great way to freshen it up! Orders of magnitude above George Lazenby’s turn!

Too bad there are too many people against it, including the Broccolis, Who have yet to come up with a legitimate reason why not. even “we don’t think Idris can open a film..”
That is at least Is A reason. Not a great one, but something...

I’m watching a documentary about why it’s good to turn things on their heads - and in walks Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne. Damn.

I realize this is OT and I risk a moderation, but I think it’s important to point out that there are multiple levels to this experience - what we are seeing here, and what is systemic is not necessarily racism, but “prejudice”, a pre-determined opinion of a person or thing or concept based on a non-material reason. Not the same thing as racism. This distinction is important because insinuating that a person or policy is racist is not easily proveable , but prejudice is, because it only requires “I don’t like X...” and a nonsensical reason.

It’s not fair to call someone “RACIST!!!” and point a finger, and it’s also far too easy to take the wind out of that idea by just saying “I have [black/Asian/etc] friends”. It’s silly, but something that basic removes the intent. What is left is prejudice.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is my favorite non-Connery Bond movie. Orders of magnitude above the goofiness of the Moore movies (MwtGG and L&LD are ok) and blandness of the Dalton/Brosnan ones. I’ve enjoyed the DCraig films but haven’t loved any since Casino Royale.

And no one notices that the husband of Peggy Carter, agent of SHIELD, looks just like Steve Rogers?

Never mind that if it's the same timeline, Rogers lets Bucky be tortured and turned into an assassin over the course of 70 years.

Making it the same timeline makes it...messy.

He would be smart enough not to be seen around. Peggy worked A LOT. Not sure what Steve would have done with all that time. Bowling?

He traveled through time to be together and you are worried about how he shopped for groceries without being recognized.

It was just the happy ending he and Peggy Carter deserved.

Hallelujah someone else who gets it. People waaaaaaaaaay over think this stuff, it was the perfect way to end Steve’s story, anyone who has been following the MCU since the first cap should have wanted this as Caps end it was bitter sweet.

It’s also funny how people are concerned with little details like Cap & Peggy when the main plot of the film is about time travel.

#288 9 days ago

On the one hand, it's a comic book movie and I'm willing to overlook minor quibbles like that.

On the other, the movie invites nitpicking when the characters specifically call out other movies for doing time travel wrong.

I just think time travel is just lazy writing most of the time when it's not the main focus of a story.

Have a problem? Introduce a time travel gimmick to solve it.

Don't like a story line or wrote yourself into a corner? Use a time travel retcon and do an alternate timeline.

I’m trying to figure out how SW TFA passed Avengers on an 18 day cumulative.

End game was well ahead after the first 15 days but lagging off this weekend so they switched lead. I’m curious if that means TFA will continue as the all time domestic lead?

Yeah, there's no way Avengers beats TFA at this point (for US gross). I think it still has a shot to overtake Avatar as the all-time worldwide #1 though.

I’m keeping track might possibly pass Avatar but needs to have legs. Most of the big money is gone. Interesting EG already made $600M in China alone. When Avatar was out China was no big deal $200M in China for Avatar.

Well, that's the special Tuesday discount price to get people in the door. The prices go up drastically on the weekend. The full ticket price is around $18 now. Back then it was somewhere around $12, if I remember right.
