I attended an auction in Sevierville Tennessee last Saturday, which was various vending machines and included a row of pinball machines. I thought perhaps some of you might be interested in the results.
Bidding is done in person only, there is no listing of inventory prior to the day of the auction. They charge sales tax unless you provide a government tax form. Sellers are allowed to bid on their own stuff, but I don't think anyone "won" back their own game.

Listed here is name of the game, price it sold for, and in parenthesis after, price it normally seems to sell for on pinside. Keep in mind people didn't have to pay shipping, other than that they have to take it away themselves.

Family Guy pretty used $3900 (4700)
Elvira House of Horror Premium nice $7000 (7200)
Jurassic Park Pro nice $4700 (5200)
Aerosmith Pro $5100 (4750)
Hurricane errors on screen $950 (2500)
Indianapolis 500 used $3100 (3700)
Shaq Attack used $1250 (1500)
Iron Maiden Pro nice $4800 (4800)
F-14 Tom Cat used $1000 (1600)
Viper Night Driving nice $1800 (2000)
Full Throttle nice $3200 (3700)
Star Trek Pro nice $3950 (4500)
Oktoberfest nice $5500 (6225)
Whirlwind very used $3250 (2600)
Alice Coopers nightmare castle nice $5500 (6200)
Legends of Wrestlemania LE #'d edition $5150 (3700)
Rock and Bullwinkle data east w/ topper used $2700 (2600)
Gilligan's Island used $4200 (2700)
Getaway II w/ topper $3000 (3500)
South Park missing flippers, buttons, very used looking, locked so you couldn't look inside, who knows if it has any parts??? $650

I thought it interesting that two games went very much higher than on pinside, the LE wrestlemania and gilligan's island. I bought the F-14. Otherwise I didn't buy or sell any of the other pinballs. I was there to get rid of some gumball machines, change machines, capsule machines etc. that I had way too long.

I have a photo of every pinball if anyone asks me to post them. I'll post one as an example.

Nice, is there not some auctioneer's fee on top of the sale price?

#3 3 years ago

Second auction in a row that Aerosmith went over 5k.

After seeing these numbers, the nice thing about auctions is that you aren't necessarily getting a great deal, but at least you have time to plan ahead and don't have to worry about needing to be within 5 minutes of an ad posting to buy one.

Thank you for posting the information. I was debating about going there for one of the auctions but I don’t really have the space- or cash- right now.

Yes, $10.00 per item.

There isnt a buyers premium?

Quoted from SpyroFTW:

There isnt a buyers premium?

That's the buyers premium $10.00.

Here's all the fees.

Say a game sells for $1000.00

The buyer will pay $1000.00 + $10 (buyer premium) + 10% sales tax of $100 = $1110.00

The seller will pay in fees: $15 entry fee + 10% of ending price (min $10, max $100) so his fees would be $115.00.

Auction gives him $885, the buyer pays $1110.00, the states gets $100 and the auctioneer gets $125.

The auctioneer fees are very fair, considering they bring a staff of almost 20 people, rent a large hall, bring all kinds of dollies and the like, handle all the money, do the advertising etc. I don't think they make that much.

This auction is normally attended and vids posted on YouTube by GalaxyGames843. He wasn’t able to attend this one but a subscriber sent him video of the pins being auctioned & he posted it on his channel.

Thanks OP for the results!

Are you an operator? Buyer premium for the general public is a lot higher, like 12% of the hammer price.

#11 3 years ago

Yeah a $10 fee seems way low, are you sure it wasn't 10%?

I was definitely only charged $10. however, I might have been put in as an operator since I brought 18 items to sell (those gumball machines etc.). However, I bought a pinball in November at the same auction definitely as a normal customer, so I'll find the receipt for that tomorrow and look at the charges. I bought a Stranger Things pinball then.

This looks like the AGS auction. From their site: "There is a $15 per item registration fee to enter the item into the auction. There is also a commission charged once the item is sold. This commission works on a sliding scale. The Commission is 10% with a minimum charge of $10 per item and a maximum charge of $100 per item."

From https://auctiongamesales.com/faq/

Not bad, much better than it used to be with USAA and Superauctions.

I bought a dirty harry for $1900 and it was just over 2200 out the door in winston salem. This was right before prices went high. Now the prices are not worth attending because of fees and taxes.

Cant really compare to pinside as most pinside sales are games shopped with no issues. Who knows the actual condition of those games at the auction inside, under playfield, operation wise, hacked stuff. Been to plenty auctions over the years, and games are taken there to sell usually for a reason.
majority have issues.

If you sell something then they just charge you the flat rate for buyers premium vs the full percentage rate. It can be worth it to sell something if planning on buying something expensive.

I just now checked my November 2020 invoice for a pinball I bought as a consumer. I paid $10 buyers premium plus sales tax. No 10% buyers fee added. However, sales tax in Tenn is 10%.
