Attilla is getting a new lease on life. She was a rough dirty girl that saw more than a few plays. And she pretty much needs most everything. But I think it’s cool because someone(s) kept her running: welded scoops, insert decals, worn to wood at the pops, and all sorts of creative solutions. But she’s complete and mostly working.

The back story was pretty cool because it was sold here early this year by another great Pinsider @pinphila So will be cool for him to see it come back. There’s always discussions on what an original is worth. Some of the discussion is here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/northeast-us-for-sale-thread/page/261#post-4889655

The owner is doing it up with new @mirco playfield, Starship Fantasy ramps, @taylorva rails, plastics and most or all mechs/scoops as needed. He’ll be doing the Rad Cals for his cabinet while I’m swapping playfields.

Hoping to highlight the journey of the playfield and will be my first #attackfrommars AFM playfield.

The old ramps are really beat up. Two of the metal left ramp entry supports are broken where they secure to posts. Few other creative repairs.

This is the first Mirco I’ve done since they started the tapered dimples. It’s really nice and saves some time have to open up. For the few things I’ve mounted, they’ve been dead on. Even the pop bumper bumper mounting screw holes are tapered and larger than the studs.

Trying something different using Mylar on the underside of the new shooter lane entry ramp. It always seems like the “foot” always slightly moves and makes a wear line in playfields over time. Being a friction fit they can sometimes move.

So ran a strip of Mylar on the ramp to give it some protection.

Top side uses (6) 8-32 t-nuts. Here’s the progress so far.

Pop bumper lighting: since myself and others are seeing the flat tin leads break so easily, we are going with the regular wire leads. They don’t look as nice as a clean and staples flat tin, but they’re hard to replace if they break.

Using clear tubing for some extra abrasion resistance.

Couple of notes we found regarding new plastic sets: they don't come with all the clear plastics. On the first picture, just this one one the left is included. The others you'll have to get separately. Note the one plastic has two of the same clears stacked on top. The other has two clears but they're different. Something to note if you have clear plastics that have seen better days.

Pop bumpers, rubbers and posts are mostly installed. He will be using silver Cliffy posts for sleeves. They look nice and match the playfield as well. I followed the rubber ring sheet for all. I'm seeing the one but the upper right pop bumper calls for a 3/4" I believe. It originally had two single rings which I think will be the route we go. Otherwise the bumper ring hits the rubber ring.

Mechs are apart other than a broken coil bracket and two ball popper armatures, nothing is needed. He did get several new parts like pop brackets.

Here’s the most of the mech pics:

Top side with all new targets (we are going with new red targets not yet arrived) installed.

Note the one 3/4” rubber at upper right pop that they call for. Singles will be installed as they interfere with ring.

Minimal visual progress, but the wire management has been ultrasonic’d, polished, and re-installed. I take the brackets, screws, and plastics apart for my process. This was pretty dirty so I have to do some extra cleaning on the plastics for these.

Removed all the walnut residue in the screws and mounted back as original pictures showed. It looks a lot better than it did coming apart.

The owner wanted the stainless ramp flaps so swapped them over. Hardware on old ramps is now off and being cleaned and tumbled.

The mother ship armature was pretty worn. New replacement 04-10361 is $25 so I took one of the old A-17767 from the game that is worn at tip and cut down to fit.

Finished result is the last picture on the towel.

Coils a go go. And last of mechs needing tear down while the harnesses are drying after cleaning: ball gate actuators.

Few pics of tear down of actuators and cleaned coils with new wrappers.

Polishing parts is about at the end. Some of the last of the mechs and back panel corner gussets.

The single drop target main mech had a stud spinning. I was trying to JB Weld it but between the cleaning up of it breaking the drop stop plastic and being worried that it wouldn't hold, we're ordering a new one.

I’m wrapping up the diverter assembly and had a few notes that may help someone. On this playfield, the plastic bearing wasn’t fitting into the new playfield. It’s expected and stupid of me not to check. Looks like the clear is just enough to make it not fit and don’t want to use force here.

So found a 8.20mm drill bit I had that was the perfect fit. I hand beveled the hole with my counter sink tool and drilled backwards. Perfect fit. Sealed with kruzman kit and all good.

Test fitting shows the diverter wasn’t opening all the way. After a quick check I missed something else. The drive arm assembly part # A-14185 was oblonged at the spring hole. Totally missed this. Notice the play in the pictures. The plunger moves that much but the diverter can’t due to the sloppy hole. something to look for. Marco has them for $15...

Flipper assemblies mounted. First issue I’ve had although not concerned. Holes don’t line up so great. This is one area I wish there were dimples but rolling with it. They are on and installed.

Looking awesome!!!
I love it when that install kit helps. For how simple it is, it has helped so many people, and elimated clear cracks, chips and lifts. you restore is looking top notch. Sweating the details. You only get one chance, so you want to go overboard on cleaning all of assembly parts. you wont regret it. cheers and keep up the good work

Freshening up the downtown. Lamp harness was installed and cinched down with incandescent bulbs throughout. All dimples were perfect and made this a quick process.

Micro switches all done: Laid out the switch harness and my method is replacing one at a time. Cinch them down and adjust each switch at that time. All the dimples were spot on and only needing some switch adjustment with an actual ball. As of now, they are looking good.

Pop bumper switches were installed and adjusted. Again, dimples were spot on and slotted holes in bracket allowed for perfect adjustments.

The crimped connections were removed as I went. I have a few more to contend with for the flipper switches but will be fixed like they were never there.

We have lots of parts today with more coming tomorrow and hopefully last on Saturday.

Note the red 3-D targets are likely for AFMR, so need to drill these out and add the extra lug. No big deal and had to rewire the new center target motor and switches as they had the wrong connector, no diodes, and switches were soldered wrong (for AFM). Things to note if you’re ordering new parts for this title. Many don’t note these in the comments.

Also, one Martian mech has the oblong hole egged out which would cause the Martian to spin 360^ on the shaft. So had to order this one.

Inspirational. You make it look WAY easier than it is (in my world). Surprisingly I have seen more restores that dont re-grain and clean the assemblies than work like this. I would not have guessed that is the truth, but it is. I love seeing someone go beyond the call of duty.
Looks awesome!!!!!!!!~!

Thank you Ron. Huge compliment from you. The next one is another AFM playfield from you which should end up just as nice as this.

All but one solenoid left to solder and only because I missed it.

Runway was regrained and re-installed.

Mylar placed at center drop targets, shooter feeder, ramp flaps, entire pop area, return drain and soon to be at wire form ball drops.
