My favorite AFM mod of all time is still the one I saw at the Pinball Hall of Fame 5 or 10 years ago. One of the martians (upper right, IIRC) had been replaced by the head of Beavis from some Beavis and Butthead toy. Watching him jump up and down...he was Cornholio! He needed TP for his bung-hole!

Nicaragua!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was playing in a league tournament today, a friend gave new meaning to the term "Stacked Multi-Ball"...

Quoted from LOTR_breath:

Has anybody on here ever made it to RTU with no extra balls, open outlanes, and tight tilt? I have never been able to do it. With extra balls turned on I found it too easy and my best score was around 42B. But with EB's off I've never made it to RTU and my best score is around 18B.

I have, completed everything but the final shot on one ball.

I joined the club the other day.
Love the game. The machine is already blinged up.

2 things I want to change so far.

1. The LEDs in the back box. Post number 1 has the layout already which looks great. However I already have cool whites everywhere and the top of the translite (where is says attack from mars) they shine through and cause a really bad glare on the machine. Does anyone have this issue?

2. I have a shaker motor in there. Its not really very strong. Well compared to a stern game anyway. Its pictured below.
Is there a better place to put it?

Anyone here have a pinsound board in their AFM? I am debating between just upgrading the speakers to FF or doing both speakers and pinsound.

Any reviews? Worth it or not? Gameplay with pinsound would be awesome to see!

My buddy is looking for the color dmd. Anyone know where to pick one up. The color dmd site says out of stock. They are all compatible regardless of title now correct?

Just get the LED version:

http://shop.colordmd.com/led-replacement-display-for-attack-from-mars-pinball-machine/

Cheaper and prolly no where near the power load of the LCD.

I'd even be willing to sell you my LCD ColorDMD so I could go LED.

Not kidding either.

Yep. The picture doesn't even do it justice. His work is top notch.

Does anybody use a Mirco repro playfield in his AFM and can give a litte review (playability, parts fitting, dimples, insert ghosting)? The latest playfields should have the same clear coat as TH and WOZ. So i assume it should play very nice, right?

12V needed for custom topper

Hi, I'm finally in the club. I have just made a light chaser for a UFO topper I am making but I need to pick up 12V from somewhere. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Got my playfield touched up, fixed up, and at least 4 layers of clearcoat done. Reassembly begins today....!b25c091ff086741d833f7c0f208ba8c49dc6ab7c (resized).jpg

Let it cure as long as possible... as fast as afm plays i can see that thick clear getting damaged especially at edges....

It's been 2 weeks since the playfield came back, so I think we'll be good!

Heading to WeirPinball's now to begin!

Someone off the radar who is completely not in the pinball community - a automotive specialist who does it on the side, and boy, was it worth the price (read: way cheaper than the numbers this community is used to).

Id try to at least wait a month...... longer is always better but a month is usually the minimum from my experience....

With me being active duty, I don't have that luxury. I report to my new base about 1000 miles south of here, 28 February.

That being said, here's a quick picture of where we go today. I'll have more in my own thread.

I have a Mirco AFM that's about 3 years old. It has several issues, mentioned here (and in other posts if you google around):
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/hoarding-cpr-playfields#post-1509684
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/installing-mantis-sol-protector-on-untweaked-mirco-playfield
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/afm-mirco-pf-should-i-get-clear-before-installing#post-927461

HEP used to have a great series of videos where he showed how to fix each of the big issues, one-by-one, but sadly they are no longer available on his YouTube channel.

Don't know if some, all, or none of those issues have been addressed in the latest run. My unprotected SOL hole is now tearing itself up pretty quickly - instead of gradually wearing down like you'd expect if it was just wood, the thick ceramic clear is cracking and taking some wood with it. So I'd definitely take the steps suggested in the post above to widen the SOL hole and put a Mantis in there from day one. It also sounds like having the PF corrected and re-cleared by a pro will get it playing as good as (and looking almost as good as) the original.

My ultimate solution to my woes was to pay about 3x the price of a Mirco and get a Kruzman-cleared OEM playfield that looks freaking amazing. Looking forward to swapping PFs as soon as I get all my ducks in line.

#226 3 years ago

Thanks for all the information. Mirco wrote me that the current AFM playfields use the same clear coat as WOZ and TH. So I guess it’ll be fine now with that clear. I have seen the videos of HEP when they were still online. I just hope the SOL hole will be bigger now so a protector fits better in there.
I had an original AMF playfield restored from one of the best playfield restorer in Europe, but nearly every insert has ghosting now (see video). So I guess even with a top restored playfield you are never on the save side. I now ordered a AFM playfield from Mirco and will play my restored playfield to death till I do a PF swap.

As of last year, the sol hole still needed to be filed (enlarged) to accept a mantis protector.

#228 3 years ago

I ordered, swapped a Mirco afm years ago (late first run) and those shipped with mantis-style protectors. No protector included now?

I can give you an answer for that in about one month when i receive my new AFM playfield.

Just about finished with my afm. Added a few leds in this bad boy. My favorite is the blue flasher in the out hole. Adds so much more to the light show.

Looks great! Man, you did some serious upgrades in the lighting department.

Here's mine. We just finished reassembly of the game. Did a PF restoration job to this one. Had damaged areas touched up, clearcoated at least 4 times, and then re-assembled, addressing any areas of concern like pair of flipper rebuilds, mylar reapplied to high traffic areas, all hardware run through tumblers, all plastic parts in the ultrasonic cleaner, pop bumpers rebuilt, ANYTHING electrically weird/trouble spots addressed and made like new again, plastic protectors throughout the game, and did some custom powercoating on the habit trails. The habit trails are to mimic the heat/fire emanating behind artillery or rockets/missiles (think the Jackpot animations). Figured we'd try something different.

All in all, I think it came out great!

There is usually a set on eBay from Phoenix arcade. They are silkscreened and the best imo. I have installed two sets and they are awesome.

What keeps a ball going into the lock shot from hitting the switch that gives dirty pool? On my new to me AFM a soft shot to the lock will give a lock, but a solid shot normally gives dirty pool.

seems to be a lot of these hitting the sale block in the last few weeks. guess ditching them before the remakes come out?

So I pulled the big saucer bracket off and found the gate. Funny thing is that it seems to be doing just fine in there. Swings to let a ball go to the VUK, and does not let a ball go back in the other direction.

Probably, but I didn't want to wait 12+ months and who knows what the price will be. MMr came in at 8k when MM was 12k. AFM is not that high, so an 8k AFMr will not have as much appeal IMO.

Make sure microswitch in trough isn't set too sensitive and triggering due to vibration. Pretty sure it's adjustable. And obviously all wire/diode connections should be good. If not, again, vibration could be trouble.

I checked the switch while the kids were still getting ready this morning and man was that thing on edge. Eased it off a little and didn't have a false trigger in two games. I wasn't shooting for the center ship at all though, so I will play some more tonight to make sure it still registers when you get behind the drop target. It should, but I won't turn down more play time on this game if I don't have to.

been 2 in stl in the last week, and 2 on here in the last 2 weeks, plus one in Rockford il craigslist

O man i dont know lol.... i love both for different reasons. Both seem to be about the same difficulty the way i have them set up. Afm is faster and has a little more flow but mm has few more shots and thimgs to do tho. While mb, afm and mm feel similar they play completely different and are all great in a collection imo...

#248 3 years ago

Ugh..... Have had this pin for years, three shots away from ruling the universe for the first time and I blew it. My kids thought I had lost it. Seriously screaming for ten minutes. Can't believe it. Devastated.

Yep i had same thing happen not long ago.... havent been close since lol.... such a great game

#250 3 years ago
Quoted from Concretehardt:

I owned both - AFM is a better game. I felt like the "monty python" feel of MM got old and the game play was artificially deep. AFM to me seemed more creative and had lots of little unique quirks and fun rule ideas that set it apart. So my MM moved on and AFM is a permanent member of the collection...
