I picked mine up cheap many moons ago. It played but needed a new playfield as the old one was worn to the wood and most of the inserts were lifted or gone. It hurt my feelings when the only one I found, a NOS, cost me $1200. Nearly what I paid for the game.

The shop job was a nightmare - adjusting the gophers exactly right took almost as much time as rebuilding the PF. I can see why this game was hated on location and didn't sell well. It really needs to be set up right. For example, the code doesn't take into account that the gophers may be out of position. If a gopher is supposed to be up, but is down, because of some mechanical issue, you can't lock a ball and you can't achieve multiball. And since the multiball jackpot shot is such a huge award, not being able to get there really screws the game. These types of things plague this game on location and is probably why people didn't like it back in the day.

On the other hand, if the game is set up right, it's such a blast to play. I think the layout is one of lawlor's best.

I set the gopher taunts to aggressive and have the ball fire back down the middle. Bud and Buzz are confrontational and funny. I hate golf, but I love this game.

the hole busted out on my buzz gofer some time back and yes, I could not find one anywhere. The solution was to create a mold of the existing gofer then cast one. It did not come out as nicely detailed as the original obviously but at least there was a gofer there to smash! I made 4 extra for the future just in case.

If you haven't seen on this thread:https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/ngg20-new-code-for-your-no-good-gofers-2020/page/5#post-5808116 I am rewriting the code for NGG. The pinmame portion needs some work and I need to rewrite the code that controls the slam ramp and the wheel.
For those of you who have a NGG please give me a hand because I don't want to have to go back and install the original boards.

What I need to know is how long exactly does the slam ramp stay down when it fires. I am thinking it is about 3 seconds but if someone could time it with a stop watch then that would be helpful.

About No Good Gofers: Battle For The Green:
A wandering bear is head-struck by a golf ball and loses all his memory--even that he is a bear! Buzz, a mischievous munchkin of a gopher hates all golfers. When Buzz discovers the bear, he names him Bud and convinces him that he's really a gopher too. With Bud's raw strength, Buzz hatches a plan to take the golfers out and reclaim the course!

The music, animations, voice work, and sound effects follow this comical and cartoon-ish vein and were made to be accessible to all. Buzz tends to be critical and confrontational of the player's shots. Bud, on the other hand, is the comic relief of the team. He's a bear that thinks he's really an over-sized gopher. Let’s just say he’s a little slow on the uptake.

Questions:
Does your kit include side art or a new backglass?
Not in the kit, however, we have contacted an industry leading artist to create new backglass artwork and we plan on offering this as an upgrade option for those who want it once the artist is done.

Can your kit play the original game?
Yes. The NGG:B4G upgrade kit will not only play the new game but players can also select the original game from a menu. Additionally, in future updates we plan to add functionality to the original game where appropriate.

Quoted from jrcmlc:

Sorry, I just bought a NGG, what is this and why do I want it?

welcome to the club. NGG is a great game and one I have owned for over two decades and will never sell.

For info on our kit please check post #1824 or you can check my other thread if you are interested in all of the hairy details of how this thing came to be: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/ngg20-new-code-for-your-no-good-gofers-2020

In a nutshell, it is a 2.0 kit that allows you to play both the original game as well as a new 2.0 game that is more in line with modern games. We pitch it as paying 2000$ to make you machine more like one of the new $7000 machines that the current manufacturers are selling.

The thing that is exciting, I think, is the expansion possibilities that extend to the original game. We haven't released any accessories yet but we are working on things like toppers, RGB lighting kits, and shaker motors that would all work with the original code as well as the new code. Our desire is to take this title to another level.

Quoted from mrSATURN2012:

Anyone know why my gofer would stop dropping all the way? I guess I could unscrew the adjustment screw a tad but it’s been working fine until now.
Is it just my machine or do these have a lot of mechanical issues?

Is it stopping about half way? Sometimes gofers body can get stuck on the lip of the hole if the bolt that holds the gofer is too tight and the gofer doesn't move freely.
If it is going down almost all the way then probably a wire or something moved and is catching. I had one case where this only happened when the playfield was down and it was the manual that I had sitting in the bottom of the cabinet obstructing the gofer.

Quoted from tilt-master:

Does anyone think Planetary will ever fix the broken pieces of Gofers code? It's disappointing to see the other games that have received the treatment (that aren't close to being broken as Gofers)
Planetary signed off with James' 2.0 code and he did a great job with it. I still love what the original code structure offered, callouts are great, music is solid, especially 9 hole mini wizard, still one of my favorites. I was hoping James' 2.0 kit would have the tweaked the original code so you can play both the updated old code as well as the 2.0 version. He had initially mentioned there could be 'improved functionality' with original code within the kit but I haven't seen that yet. I would buy the 2.0 kit if this improved original code was offered

Thanks for the good words. What we are looking to do with the original code right now is allow it to trigger accessories. The grand plan is to be able to add things such as interactive toppers, shaker motors, and RGB lighting kits and to have these work with both the 2.0 code as well as the original code.

As far as changing the original code, that is not on my plate but if someone had done that I would certainly want to add that to our kit as well. The only one who I have heard of doing such is Soren but I think his tweaks are mostly bug fixes, scoring tweaks, etc. Not adding full modes or really completing the game like, as you said, is what NGG needed.

Quoted from tilt-master:

*Jackpots earned are not reflected accurately on your score, including Quick Jackpot
*bomb sound can get stuck on after gofer attack
*it's possible to skip the wizard mode if you start multiball on hole 9
*scoring is very unbalanced, multiball, pop a gofer and cart attack are the only modes worth anything
*A nice additional fix would be a left ramp lift check. When the left ramp should be up for a ball lock, when entering some modes it drops and never lifts again until Bud pops up
*a final 18 hole wizard mode would be nice bonus
I may be missing a few other things

During putt out, the wheel spins and a bunch of different mode names scroll on the screen. If you look close enough, you will notice a bunch of names of modes that do not exist in the game. Turtle wax comes to mind if I remember correctly. The game was never finished! This is what got me moving on 2.0 in the first place and why my code has real 6-ball multiballs, 2 wizard modes, and plenty of different cool modes that are all related to the original game in some way or another.

Anyway, it would be an undertaking, but if I rewrote the original rules from scratch then I could complete the game and I have contemplated this several times. Whether or not it would look as originally intended is another question. That was something I was considering about 4 years ago and I even emailed Pat Lawlor back then and asked what his true vision for the game was but he never got back to me. Not saying I am going to do this, because I really don't think the demand is there for me to justify me sinking another year of my life into it. Maybe someday I'll change my mind. For now you can play the original and the 2.0
