Looking for legs.

The parts manual lists the original legs as being: 004999-04 Black Legs.

Can anyone give me the length? Thanks.

#102 3 years ago

Atari legs are 28 1/2”. Non-ribbed.

I am looking for a good or NOS Superman playfield or perhaps a good set of scans.
Let me know if you have anything or have a lead.

Hi all,
I would like to join the club .
I am trying to fix my first Atari Superman boards.
It was totally dead and has been for several years. I have followed a few threads and downloaded Leon’s test rom, after numerous hours I have the MPU fully working as per Leon’s test rom, however it doesn’t seem to be booting in game. Also using Leon’s test rom I can see all the signals on the IO board with plenty missing so currently waiting for chips.
My question is, can someone actually explain the boot sequence of the lights, mine are currently off (but work with Leon’s rom)
I have one digit on each of the displays and it won’t go into test.
I suspect it is booting into some sort of audits mode so my next step will be to put a remote battery and replace the backup ram.
Thanks in advance,
Ray

#106 3 years ago

Further to my last post, I have got a little further. I have replaced the three ram chips 2x 2101 and 1x5101, all with 5101 and have also replaced the EPROMs with 2716s.
The machine will now go into attract mode but will not start a game.
If I press the test button the leds in position 1 and 4 flash alternately.
Still looking.

#107 3 years ago

Atari games can be very difficult. I can repair many games on my own, but I actually enlist someone else to work on my Superman. He’s actually working on it right now again.

Thought it was bulletproof last time, and it ended up having an issue again.

Did you check the memory address decoder chip?

#108 3 years ago

Both LS42s have been replaced, H4 for dead outputs and E4 for bad corrosion just on that one chip.
I haven’t gone back with the scope for a look yet.
Having finally been able to boot into attract, was just trying to work out what the lights are telling me.
The book says L1 on and L4 on indicates failure of ram j6, does this mean flashing on?

I won’t get back to it until tonight ☹️. Thanks for the reply.

Hello everyone just purchased this as part of a bulk lot. Was folded up sight unseen. I was pleasantly surprised once unfolded to see the shape it was in. Replaced power cord and speaker and it fired right up. Couple lamps out and in desperate need of new rubbers and a playfield touch up. Any tips or tricks on keeping her going or upgrades worth doing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
I'm in the process of restoring my first Atari Superman pinball machine.
Does anyone have a copy/photo of the instruction paper that goes on the inside of the cabinet box on the left hand side.
I also require a picture of the Atari Inc silver sticker that goes on the back of the head that has the serial and model number details of the machine as mine is faded.
I'm also looking for Superman pinball drop targets.
Thanking you in advance.
Kind regards,

Louie...

What is the glowing 25 cent piece in the center? Is it a coin return? I’m missing mine and can’t find it online to replace. What is the name of the part?

It’s a price plate. Probably not the easiest part to find. Check with Steve at Pinball Resource. Or you could make one if you have access to a 3D printer.

It’s accessed by removing parts on the backside of the coin door. Held in by a bracket / plate. Here’s some pics from when I disassembled and restored my game.

check each switch on your drop target group....make sure each one is working........it has to get a signal from all 5 to know to reset the targets.....i had this same problem once

I’m not very strong at fixing things. I tried to fix it and there is a “pin that is either too short or broken that holds it together. I pushed it back into place and it fully broke apart how do I replace that “pin”?

Still have the problem? Did you check with Steve at PBR? He usually has obscure parts. I have a box of spare parts, but don't think I have a full drop assembly. I'll take a look tonight when I get home.

Colsond3

Yes, I have now fixed it I ordered a new pin. I have also ordered an LED kit. Hopefully that will resolve the light situation. The next thing I need to do is purchase a new pop bumper light fixture.
Lastly when I replaced my rod and ring set I over tightened the nut and snapped the post! I guess I learned the hard way the machine is 40 years old and needs a gentler hand!

Thank you
Jeff

Yes it does. And you don't want to break an Atari game. Not easy to fix when they go down, unless you have mountains of electronic experience. Congrats. Check back if you encounter any other issues.

Anyone with a spare playfield they would be willing to sell ?
Mine had severe planking and wear, the touchups and clearcoating didn't turn out too well.

I just finished upgrading to LED’s I am missing a few but they are sending me the ones missing! I am so happy! I have fixed the drop targets, replaced a pop bumper assembly, and replaced the fuses. First time repairing a pinball machine! Didn’t think I could! Granted I broke the ring and rod tightening it too much, And broke a couple of the red pieces holding up the plastics(can’t seem to find those). All around a great experience though!

Superman actually uses (OEM) 1 3/16” faceted posts. I replaced all of mine last shop job.

Speaking of posts, anyone know what type/where to get the posts that are in the lane guides by the flippers. The ones that separate and have the clear plastics through them. I have one that's busted and can't find it from any online store.

I'm beginning to strip the playfield and had a couple split posts that broke only where one post slips inside the other. So I can get away with putting those two up top under the bigger plastics because I looked all over online and have not been able to locate any. If I do, I'll let you know but it doesn't look good currently..

Picked up this Superman a few months back and will be doing a playfield restore with 2k clear coat. Will add pictures in a few months. Need to fix two inserts that are lifting. The owner had about 8 new original coils so I have completely rebuilt the bumpers. I want this to play a little faster so I purchased the 4" leg levelers to lift the back more, we'll see how that works once the restore is complete. I will also do a cabinet restore as my wife most likely purchased the stencils for a Christmas gift.

I am helping an acquaintance with his Superman machine.

At this point I know of 1 bad coil. One of hte pop bumpers.

His flippers are not very responsive powerful. I was considering buying a flipper rebuild kit and redoing the whole flipper set up.

At a minimum I suppose I would want to buy the 3 coils (2 flipper and 1 pop bumper) and some coil sleeves.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a flipper rebuild kit? Or if not, which coil sleeves to buy at say, Marcos? I would welcome any suggestions.

There are no flipper rebuild kits that I could find as I'm working on a restoration currently.

Pinwiki cut and paste below:

8.1.2.1 Superman

Superman with WPC flipper mechs installed
Superman flipper coils operate at 50v.

If parts/coils are unavailable, a Williams WPC flipper assembly can be substituted with a FL-11630 coil. The coil is a little on the strong side. The FL-11630 has a resistance of 5 Ohm, while the original Atari coil has a resistance of 5.5 Ohm.

The coil stop will affect the flipper's travel distance--a shorter coil stop will increase the travel distance, while a longer coil stop will decrease the travel distance. A-12111 (7mm) is recommended.

Coil stop options:

A-10821 - 6mm coil stop
A-12111 - 7mm coil stop
A-12390 - 8mm coil stop

The coil stops on the original flipper assembly have a reverse coil stop, I could not find anywhere to purchase. While my brother with a tig welder will solve the issue for now, I can see replacing the whole assembly with a William's WPC version down the road as parts will be so much easier to replace. However, there may be others on Pinside that have more info for you as I consider myself new to the hobby...

#134 2 years ago

thanks!

I found the coils I needed from marcos.

I am going over there tomorrow, to install the 1 bad coil, I am hoping that new coil sleeves will be all the flipper coils need.

Does anyone ever use a little synthetic grease on any of hte parts to keep them moving smoothly? or is that a no no

#135 2 years ago

Does anyone have a high res scan of a drop target without wear? Mine all have the typical horizontal wear you see in superman. And one of them was replaced at some point with a non superman target. And since target stickers aren't available anymore I thought I'd try to get some made up on my own.

Usually there is a pop bumper fiber yoke and a metal yoke on each pop bumper. Either can break.

Both broke

Does anyone off hand know what size nut holds those pieces in ? I brought one home to buy another (one fell off, and thats how those pieces broke in the first place), but I lost it.

I guess I may just take a bunch with me.

I posted this (below) in my other superman thread, looking for any insights:

OK so as I keep going over to this guys house for repairs. Some ups, some downs.

The pcb that had issues seems to be holding up. Everything was working fairly well, except the center pop bumper which had some broken pieces , and a burnt coil.
I have a few things to address:

how do you remove a pop bumper unit? I really just need to get the metal arms out, but I can't get any of it out.

The right flipper was sticking a little, after I had changed the sleeve last week, so my friend wanted to try a new coil. We did, and it did some lightning flipper thing. Almost like it was stuck. I looked at it and didn't see any problems. It just was lightinging off and on flipping. My friend thought maybe we connected the wires backwards, so he swapped them. I think that burnt the coil? Is that possible? The 3 amp fuse on the top right backboard box started blowing again, similar to when I had the blown center pop bumper coil.

So, now I think we need to change that right flipper coil again. I will report back on that, but......

I can't get the pop bumper removed , for repair. Any insight? I will try to come back with pictures that I have on my ipad.
