I picked up a rough 1959 Around the World pin today. This will be my fourth restoration and hopefully my best. I learn something every time. The plan is the fix the broken wood on the cabinet, make stencils and do a full repaint. I'll also repaint the entire playfield and clearcoat after fixing the inserts. The inserts aren't cupped as much as they are recessed. Since the game doesn't work I'll take apart the mechanicals, clean and polish when possible. I'm sure I'll run into a few problems so please comment with suggestions. Tomorrow it is going to a local exterminator for fumigation. I'll be able to pick it up in a week and then the fun will begin. This is where I am today.

Well I’m pretty disappointed. I took the metal covers off the wood rails this morning and found bug damage on the left rail. The right side is OK. I’m taking it to the exterminator this morning so if anything is alive they can take care of it. Does anyone sell the wood rails for a 2 player machine?

#3 3 years ago

Well I have bad news, good news and more bad news. I took the machine to the exterminators yesterday and he confirmed the damage to the left wood rail is from dry wood termites. He dug around in the wood and believes it is from an old infestation since there were no live bugs. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a source for new rails yet. I still have some time. I plan to wait until the game comes out of the fumigation vault and then do a very close inspection for additional damage. If it isn't too bad I'll press ahead with the cabinet. For now my main concern is if the termites got in the side.

#5 3 years ago

Yes I talked to Steve this morning. He has the rails for a single player game and this is a two player. Apparently the single player rails are rounded on the top and the two player rails are flat. He said I would have to make them myself.

#7 3 years ago

Depending on the results of a thorough inspection I’ll have to make a set somehow.

I got the pin back from the exterminator yesterday. He confirmed the termite damage is from a previous infestation. I removed the playfield and bottom relay board to get a look at what I’m dealing with. It is of course very dirty which was expected. Beside the termite damage on the left wood rail I found a small area of damage on both corners of the back of the cabinet. This can be fixed easily. The rest of the cabinet is in reasonable shape.

The plan is to start with fixing the wood issues on the cabinet and doing a full repaint. I’ll need to make my own stencil and have some tracing paper on order. To help with the smell in the garage I’ll put the back box and relay board in one of those vacuum bags. The playfield is a mess cosmetically. I’ll need to do a complete repaint using an airbrush and install some decals. I’ve had good luck with Spraymax so I’ll seal the paint with it. None of the score reels or steppers work smoothly so they will be disassembled and cleaned. All the other relays will get similar attention and if it moves I’ll rebuild it. I may also use orange dot coils for the flipper. Thanks to a fellow pinsider I have a file to make new plastics. All of this should keep me busy for a year or so. I attached a few pictures of it scattered around the garage.

Quoted from illawarra92:

really don't think the playfield condition is all that bad to need a full repaint

I guess you’re right. Most guys would install new rubbers, clean and wax the playfield and have fun. For me the fun is in the project. I attached some additional pictures so you can see some of the detail that would drive me crazy. The pictures show how much the inserts have shrunk as well as the planking and paint lose.

Someone put a clasp on the front of the cabinet and did a super butch job to the wood. I’ll fill the holes with wooden dowels and still need lots of filler.

I started work on the cabinet. I stripped the paint and did some initial sanding. I discovered more termite damage. It is confined to the back and isn’t structural. Tonight I started filling holes with wooden dowels where possible and filled some of the termite damage on one of the back corners with fiberglass resin.

I ordered a new pad for the sander from Amazon. I also did some more resin on the back panel.

It’s been almost two weeks since my last update. I was able to get new parts to fix my orbital sander and purchased a new 1/4 sheet palm sander. They are very helpful with the sanding task. I finally finished filling all the termite holes with resin and have moved on to using bondo for the normal dents and scrapes. I also repaired one side of the cabinet that had bowed a little. The cabinet is made from multiple narrow pieces of wood that was glued together and the glue came loose between two boards. They didn’t separate enough to get glue in the joint so I reinforced it from the inside. It doesn’t look great, but is strong. I decided to use satin clear polyurethane on the inside of the cabinet and the bottom. I started the bottom today and think the satin finish will look good. Hopefully I’ll have time this weekend to finish sanding the bondo and maybe put on my first coat of primer.

I was able to find the time to put two coats of polyurethane on the inside of the cabinet and the first coat of primer on the outside. As expected the primer revealed small cracks and imperfections I didn’t see before. I’ll get some glazing putty for that.

I sanded the glazing putty and put another coat of primer on it last night. This morning I sprayed the yellow base coat. It’s nice to finally see some color.

I put another coat of yellow on it this morning. I’m not sure what to do next. Still a ton of options.

#24 3 years ago

The main cabinet is inside and done for now. I’ve decided to start on the back box next. No termite damage this time, but lots of splits, warps and dings to keep me busy. I also painted the coin box.

I like the contrast between the outside and inside of the cabinet. Strange that the base color is yellow, but will be mostly covered with blue and orange when it’s complete. I still need to find a source to make new wood rails for the sides. It’s always something.

I have almost everything stripped from the playfield. I found a couple of surprises. When flipping it over the edge caught on my frame. A good size piece of the top veneer split and peeled away. It will be easy to repair, but a surprise all the same.

I always rebuild the mechanical parts and sometimes wonder if it is a waste of money. Not this time. Check out the linkage on my upper flippers. This time I’ll need the complete rebuild kit as well as the shafts and flipper bats.

Did you pick this game up in South Florida by chance?

No in Tampa. The original owner said it was in the family bar in Clearwater before keeping it at their house. It’s pretty beat up. It’s going to take a lot of time and $ to restore.

#31 3 years ago

I started working on the back box again. I stripped off the paint and sanded all the wood. It’s almost a shame to cover it up with paint. I have a few things to glue and fill before the first coat of primer. I plan to use satin polyurethane on the inside like the main cabinet.

Quoted from mark532011:

Looking good! Another option rather than tracing paper for the design is to use a scanner. I picked up a cheap one (Epson v39) and the lid comes off. This allowed me to scan the cabinet of my miss-o in 8.5x11 sections at a time and stitch them together. That allowed me to cut out a paint mask in the cameo. It came out pretty good. Better than I think I could have done otherwise
[quoted image]

Looks good I wish I had a Cameo and the computer program/skills to use the software. For this cabinet I plan to use poster board cut with a exact knife.

I finished fixing the wood issues and put on the first coat of polyurethane on the trim and inside of the back box.

I should be working on the back box, but I can’t resist the playfield. I glued a couple more spots of delaminated upper plies and plugged a couple of enlarged holes with a wood dowels. I also noticed grooves worn into the playfield where the posts are installed. Take a look at the picture. The groove is clearly visible.44392CCF-2E23-482E-BD56-8DF8B3603C0E (resized).jpeg44392CCF-2E23-482E-BD56-8DF8B3603C0E (resized).jpeg

The cleaning with magic eraser and Novus 2 came out as good as can be expected. The playfield still looks like crap, but at least it’s clean and shiny.

I printed off the scanned files and placed them on the playfield for reference. Although the scanner is supposed to be 1 to 1 it printed slightly different. Not enough to worry about, but I wonder why.

Hi Jeff, I just stumbled across this thread on your '59 woody project. Looking good so far with all the work you're putting in to it. I love reading threads like this and I love woodies too, so I'll be following your progress now. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Mal

Thanks Mal. Were you able to do anything with the pictures I sent last year?

I put a second coat of grey primer on it today. Hopefully I can find some white for the last coat.

The scan is so I have a pattern to make water slide decals for the words and numbers. I’ll use frisket and an airbrush to paint the entire playfield .

#52 3 years ago
Quoted from ibis:

Ive used frisket too, but with lettering it can be a total pain and not always come out well with crisp lines. My thought was to use the scan to make vinyl letters that would lay over the letters so you could paint over/around them. Then use a mirror image without them and apply that vinyl to paint the numbers.

This was the last playfield that got a complete repaint. I used water slide decals for all the letters, numbers and the suites for the cards

those look great! So far I have only had good luck with dark decals against a white or light background. White/yellow decals on dark background washed out too much for me, I ended up using the cameo and cutting out white vinyl. There is a thickness to it though.

The water slide decals have worked well so far. Some day I would like to get a cameo and give it a try.

I painted the blue and orange on one side of the back box. I’m not sure what to say. I think it came out as good as can be expected. There are fuzzy edges like original because I used poster board for the stencil. I’ll give it some time, but my first impression is I prefer the crisp lines from the vinyl stencils.

I painted the blue on the other side of the box. It didn’t go well. The stencil bowed up as I was putting on the last coat. The triangles are way fuzzier than fuzzy. It looks like I’ll be doing this side again. Not the first time I messed up.

Well I’m back where I started. I did some sanding and several coats of yellow to cover up the blue. In hind-site I should have done a coat of white first but I was able to cover the blue after several coats.

I finally finished painting the back box and have moved it inside for storage. The poster board stencils produced a less than perfect result. I suspect it was like that originally. Overall I’m happy with the result and have started laying out the stencil for the main cabinet.

Going backward seems to be normal for my projects. While fastening the playfield to the frame the upper ply in one area peeled up. It has to be about the sixth area I’ve had to repair. After I got that repaired I discovered a crack on the side of the cabinet.

I’m not having any luck with putting the last coat of yellow on the cabinet. Last night I laid it down on its side with the hope it would prevent runs if I went too heavy. No runs but the tiger stripes are just as bad. Not sure how to prevent them, but it looks like I’ll have to try again.

I took some time during the holiday to cut out the stencil for the cabinet and spray the orange on one side. I admit it took a few hours to cut the stencil and another two to put all the pieces on the cabinet and spray the orange. Although this is closer to original I did think about Pinball Pimp stencils a couple of times. I hope to find time to spray the blue tomorrow.

Since I have some time off this week I cleaned and painted the original legs. I used Rust-Oleum Almond. It is a very close match the original color. One coat of primer and two coats of Almond paint and they looked great. Naturally I wasn’t satisfied and decided to add some clear for extra protection. Of course I went too heavy and now all four legs have runs. When will I learn to leave good enough alone?

For now the back box is done. I went through the mechanics on the board cleaning and labeling everything. I had to replace one coil, but mostly it was just cleaning. The back box was stripped, repaired and repainted using poster board stencils. The inside was coated with polyurethane. The new BGRESTO backglass is still in the box. It’s nice to cross this off the list as complete.

Removing the inserts was easier than expected. I used my heat gun on the low setting to heat the backside of each insert. When the front side was hot I used a socket, extension and a small hammer to knock them out. The only damage was a small portion of the top ply broke loose in one place. As soon as I find it I can glue it back. There is a lot of glue in each hole that needs removing. Other than that I’m happy.

I finished fixing the paint on the cabinet and removed all the paper. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the bottom and inside. The paint isn’t perfect, but it will pass. If I have to do it again I would make stencils similar to the ones from pinball pump. Painting with poster board stencils is harder than I thought. I guess I can’t put off the wood rails much longer. I’m going to try some local lumber yards that make custom trim. Hopefully I can find someone to make them.

I’m back on the playfield. My next step is to replace all the inserts including the rollover inserts. I was lucky enough to buy new for all of them except for the rollover inserts. After thinking about it for awhile I decided to make them. I used two 1 3/16 inserts of each color. I drilled holes in each; one big and one small. Sanded the edges of the one with the small hole and epoxied them together. I’ll need to add a thin shim in the hole for the button to make it flush, but it should work.

I sanded the playfield with 320 grit and filled all the low spots with 2pac using an eye dropper. It looked like a serious case of the mumps. An hour later I applied three coats of Spraymax using the whole can. Today I sanded off the high spots with 220 grit. I still have some low spots, but it’s much better.

I was hoping to paint the dark blue today. It is masked off and ready to go except I’m waiting on white paint. I want to prime the area with white before the dark blue. I ordered some last week and should get it tomorrow. I printed some photos of a newer playfield that intend to use for my color choices.

I painted the dark blue tonight. My cheap Harbor Freight airbrush gave me fits. It frequently stoped spraying and when it did work it was pulsating. I bought it a couple of years ago. It worked OK then, but not this time. Looks like I’m going to buy another one before I spray again.

I got my new side rails today. I found someone in my neighborhood that makes custom furniture on the side. He did a great job and solved one of the major sourcing problems I had. I experimented some with a couple of stains, but neither one is close enough. I’m not sure what to try next. I’m trying to match the color of the front rail. Let me know if you have a suggestion.

Quoted from JimWilks:

New side rails look nice. Surely there must be a stain color that makes it close enough to the bar? Perhaps mixing a couple of stains?

I tried two stains and three polyurethanes that have the stain mixed in. I also mixed several combinations. Finally I gave up and said good enough. I went with a polyurethane with pecan stain. It’s a little too light, but will be OK after multiple coats. I’ve got three coats now and will stop at four or five.

#105 3 years ago

I put on four coats and am calling it good enough. I put them on temporarily for fit and to see what it looks like. I think it looks pretty good. I’ll use some Titebond to glue them permanently.

I did some of the white today. I was on the fence about the color. The white on my playfield and others I’ve seen pictures of were yellowed in various degrees. I considered mixing in some yellow to tint it some, but ultimately went with straight white since that was the color under the posts. It looks totally different and I think I’ll like it. Unfortunately I had problems again with my cheap Harbor Freight airbrush. I have three of them. The first two barely spayed any white at all. The third sprayed very heavy. I believe that’s why it is peeling in a couple of areas. I think I’ll spray the rest of the white before going back to fix the mess ups.

I think you’re right. I’ve always had problems with white. I’m going to thin the paint when I do the rest of it. I’m not sure of the nozzle size. It’s whatever came with it.

I painted the white today. I had a problem with the frisket not sticking and didn’t get a complete second coat. I’ll need to spray white again and somehow clean up the fuzzy edges and overspray.

Well it’s been a few months since I’ve done anything on this. Frankly I had lost interest, got frustrated and it was way too hot to do any painting. Now that the excuses are out of the way I filled more low spots and added a couple coats of Spraymax today. Hopefully it will be nice and flat after sanding. The last couple of nights I’ve been working on the decals. Computer work isn’t my thing so I’m going slow. Once I’m happy I’ll take the file to the print shop. I suspect that’s a month or so away. Well here are the pictures to show where I’m at now.

How is spraymax working for you down here in the Tampa area? I get a fair amount of orange peel because I find it sets up pretty fast before it has a chance to really flow and level out. I end up spraying an extra coat and sanding till I get it where I want, but I was curious about your results.

The Spraymax works pretty good although the only way to avoid orange peel is to go heavy. During the last session I laid done a mist coat, then a heavy wet coat that looked great. I had to go a little lighter for the third coat since the can was getting low and there is orange peel.

I didn’t get to the printshop this week due to work and bad weather today.

In my spare time during the last week or two I cleaned, polished and painted the shooter rod. I put it together today with new springs, beehive and rubber tip. I’m really happy with the red paint. With a few coats of clear it looks better than the picture.

I went to Staples yesterday to get the decals printed. They did a test print on plain paper and I discovered a problem. The file containing the majority of the decals printed with different fonts and colors than how they were created. They said that happens sometimes with documents created in Word. Apparently they have a different version than mine. They said to convert the file to a pdf and try again. I was able to get a good page of decals for the arrows and rockets so not all was lost.

#152 2 years ago

I brought my pdf files to Staples tonight and was happy to see the test print on normal paper was perfect. All the fonts and colors looked great. I gave the go ahead and reminder her to change the fuser or whatever that thing is. I’m not sure if she did, but the result was melted paper. She melted 8 pages before I could get her to stop. She was on a mission. I only have 10 pages left and need to find another print shop. Slightly bummed.

Well the decal saga continues. I tried a different Staples and they had a similar problem with the paper jamming. Fortunately they stopped after one page. Next I went to Office Depot and they were able to successfully print all six sheets without any jams or melted paper. I was relieved since that left me with three extra pages just in case. After I got home I realized the dark blue decals are way too dark. They are almost black. That color is on 5 of the 6 pages. Not happy now. I ordered more paper from Amazon and will need to find another print shop.

It’s so dark it’s hard to see the blue is outlined with black.

I finally got around to installing the decals. It went pretty good until I started putting the light blue numbers on the red background. Instead of blue they turned out almost black. I stopped for now.

Thanks for the nice comment. I still have a problem with the light blue decals that were supposed to be white. When I put them on the red inserts the numbers are almost black. A forum member has offered to make stencils that I can use with my airbrush. I like that solution since I can paint them white. If that doesn’t work I’ll have to go with black. Time will tell.

The last of the decals that can be done have been applied. Now I have to wait until the stencils arrive. I’m not sure how long it takes to ship from Australia.

While I’m waiting on the decals I started cleaning up some of the coin door parts. There are these wire form things at the bottom of the bracket for the coin mechanism that are bent out of shape. Any idea where I can get new ones? They are PN A-4400 for the ten cent mechanism and A-4401 for the 25 cent mechanism.

I finished the coin door. The door is new from Steve at PBR and everything else was cleaned, polished or painted. I need to get a 10 and 25 cent arm for the coin accepter. I’ll try PBR first. Here are a few pictures. Next is installing the door and frame on the cabinet.

I installed the coin door and the rest of the parts for the front of the cabinet. For now I plan to leave the door in chrome and will decide later if I want to paint it beige. I’m still waiting for the playfield stencils. The mail system is killing me.

This past week I received the stencils for the white letters and numbers. They were made by a very helpful Pinsider in Australia. The amount of help I’ve received from fellow Pinsiders is amazing and I’m grateful. Before they arrived I started working on the bottom relay board. I made a new board from plywood and put on a couple coats of pecan polyurethane. I also disassembled, cleaned and painted some of the metal parts. It still has a long way to go. I plan to jump back on the playfield again so they will go on the back burner.

I applied a can of Spraymax on the playfield last night to lock down the decals. It went well. I put two dust coats down, followed with a medium coat and then emptied the can. I’ll let it sit for a week or so and then use the stencils to do the white. I’d like to get this done before the heat and humidity.

I finished the bottom board and it’s ready to be installed. I disassembled most everything and painted the metal parts. All the switches were cleaned and gapped when needed. I replaced the power cord and added an on/off switch. I also replaced the labels. Here is a before and after picture.

I installed the bottom board and made as many connections as possible. I applied power for the first time and it wasn’t completely successful. The 2nd player score reels reset to zero and the tens reel on first player also reset. I have something off since all the first player reels won’t reset and the score motor continues to run. Other than not working I’m happy with the progress. Although not original I ordered a switch cover today from Space Coast Pinball.

how did you strip the apron? sandblasting? Sanding? heat gun? paint dissolver? it seems like sanding would not work due to the dips where the card go and that it is most likely lead-based paint.

Paint stripper.

I did the final sand and buff this weekend. It came out pretty good and I’m happy with the shine. As usual I did have a small setback. While cleaning out two of the holes the outer ply of the plywood pealed up. I’m sure I can fix it so I’m not too worried. I ordered some glue needles and will use them to get glue in between the plies.
