I painted the dark blue tonight. My cheap Harbor Freight airbrush gave me fits. It frequently stoped spraying and when it did work it was pulsating. I bought it a couple of years ago. It worked OK then, but not this time. Looks like I’m going to buy another one before I spray again.

I got my new side rails today. I found someone in my neighborhood that makes custom furniture on the side. He did a great job and solved one of the major sourcing problems I had. I experimented some with a couple of stains, but neither one is close enough. I’m not sure what to try next. I’m trying to match the color of the front rail. Let me know if you have a suggestion.

New side rails look nice. Surely there must be a stain color that makes it close enough to the bar? Perhaps mixing a couple of stains?

#104 3 years ago
Quoted from JimWilks:

I tried two stains and three polyurethanes that have the stain mixed in. I also mixed several combinations. Finally I gave up and said good enough. I went with a polyurethane with pecan stain. It’s a little too light, but will be OK after multiple coats. I’ve got three coats now and will stop at four or five.

#105 3 years ago

I put on four coats and am calling it good enough. I put them on temporarily for fit and to see what it looks like. I think it looks pretty good. I’ll use some Titebond to glue them permanently.

The match on the color between the rails and the bar looks good.

Thanks, I plan to glue them on today.

The side rails are glued on and the box is back in the house. I sprayed the light red the other night. Next is the dark red followed by yellow.

I added an on/off switch to the bottom. I know it isn’t original, but I prefer it this way. The switch is a DPST so I can control two legs of the supply voltage.

I applied a can of Spraymax on it today to lock in the dark blue, yellow, red and dark red. Next is the light blue and the white.

Nothing worth posting. I’ve been busy with life and work travel. Hopefully by next weekend I’ll spray the light blue.

#121 2 years ago

I fixed several key lines and sprayed the light blue. I mixed some regular blue into the light blue to darken it some. The white is next then back to yellow.

I did some of the white today. I was on the fence about the color. The white on my playfield and others I’ve seen pictures of were yellowed in various degrees. I considered mixing in some yellow to tint it some, but ultimately went with straight white since that was the color under the posts. It looks totally different and I think I’ll like it. Unfortunately I had problems again with my cheap Harbor Freight airbrush. I have three of them. The first two barely spayed any white at all. The third sprayed very heavy. I believe that’s why it is peeling in a couple of areas. I think I’ll spray the rest of the white before going back to fix the mess ups.

I think the pigment in white can make it a bit tougher to spray. What is your needle size? I’m using 0.5mm

I think you’re right. I’ve always had problems with white. I’m going to thin the paint when I do the rest of it. I’m not sure of the nozzle size. It’s whatever came with it.

The pure white does look right to me as well.

I painted the white today. I had a problem with the frisket not sticking and didn’t get a complete second coat. I’ll need to spray white again and somehow clean up the fuzzy edges and overspray.

You’re right, the key lines will hide most of it. I used some Naphtha to remove the overspray on the light blue. It looks fine now.

I finally got around to spraying a coat of Spraymax to lock things down. Next is to add the yellow to the clouds, fix some of the white and do some more key lines. This time I also filled in some low spots so I’m hoping they will sand flat.

Well it’s been a few months since I’ve done anything on this. Frankly I had lost interest, got frustrated and it was way too hot to do any painting. Now that the excuses are out of the way I filled more low spots and added a couple coats of Spraymax today. Hopefully it will be nice and flat after sanding. The last couple of nights I’ve been working on the decals. Computer work isn’t my thing so I’m going slow. Once I’m happy I’ll take the file to the print shop. I suspect that’s a month or so away. Well here are the pictures to show where I’m at now.

How is spraymax working for you down here in the Tampa area? I get a fair amount of orange peel because I find it sets up pretty fast before it has a chance to really flow and level out. I end up spraying an extra coat and sanding till I get it where I want, but I was curious about your results.

The Spraymax works pretty good although the only way to avoid orange peel is to go heavy. During the last session I laid done a mist coat, then a heavy wet coat that looked great. I had to go a little lighter for the third coat since the can was getting low and there is orange peel.

I’ve been working on the water slide decals and did a test fit today using copy paper. I have to tweak a few things and get some help with the artwork on some of the inserts. I’m happy with them so far.

A very helpful forum member provided the artwork for the rockets and arrows that go on some of the inserts. Without him I’m not sure what I would do. Now all of the files are complete for the decals. I’ll go to the print shop this week and have them printed. The new decal paper and setting solutions arrived on Saturday.

I didn’t get to the printshop this week due to work and bad weather today.

In my spare time during the last week or two I cleaned, polished and painted the shooter rod. I put it together today with new springs, beehive and rubber tip. I’m really happy with the red paint. With a few coats of clear it looks better than the picture.

I went to Staples yesterday to get the decals printed. They did a test print on plain paper and I discovered a problem. The file containing the majority of the decals printed with different fonts and colors than how they were created. They said that happens sometimes with documents created in Word. Apparently they have a different version than mine. They said to convert the file to a pdf and try again. I was able to get a good page of decals for the arrows and rockets so not all was lost.
