I put the Pinbit plastic protectors on all my machines (if they are available) when I shop them. The main reason I do it is to protect the art on the backside from getting scratched by ball guides from underneath.

But isn't new plastic just as tough as the protectors? Has anyone broken plastic that is less than a few years old?

Depends on the specific plastic. Some get more abuse than others in gameplay. That's a bigger factor than how "tough" the plastic is, I'd think.

Yep, broke a repro CPR Pinbot plastic, the one under the visor, no protector installed.

I think older plastics may be more brittle, but the protectors offer another layer of protection. So if a ball smashes into a slingshot it would bash (and potentially chip) the protector before the plastic.
