The seller/shill bidding and buyer's premium + sales tax kills it for me. Having to add 20-25 percent onto the purchase price is a little hard to palate.

Thanks for the clarification. I understand the distinction between shill bidding and seller bidding. From the buyer's point of view it makes little difference what you call it. As a buyer you are bidding against someone who does not intend to purchase the item or already owns it. Either way it's bogus. If a seller wants to protect their item from selling too low, insist on setting a reserve price. That way, even the appearance of impropriety is avoided. Just my 2 cents.
