Applying new side rail and question about screw size

I have removed the damaged side rail on my TOM pin today. I had a HECK of a time getting the screw out. The head finally popped off so I will need to replace.

Two questions: What is the best way to apply the side rail? I've already prepared it with the tape and cleaned both surfaces. I believe this is a one shot deal so just wanted to see the best and most accurate way to apply and line up correctly.

What is the size of the carriage bolt? Mine is pretty mangled up and needs replacement.

Thanks Pinsiders!

I know what you mean. I completely stripped my CFTBL. Stripped cabinet, replayed it, new decals. Cleaned side rails, covered them with double sided tape, carefully lined it into position and then hey presto - I got it half inch out.
So much for the steady hand!
