I just picked up a Megatouch Ion... thing runs very loud (power supply, especially)... but the fan noise is pretty overbearing.

Hoping someone might have some fan alternatives that can help it run more quietly in a home.

Thanks, Todd

Could use a new fan & put rubber grommets in areas that vibrate.

It looks like there's five fans in this thing?

I've never owned anything like this...

Can I replace just the power supply fan?

I don't even know where to start looking for quiet fans...

The only way is to replace the fans with new ones, If The power supply fan is bad, Change out the power supply itself. The power supply and fans can be found online.

Try this place, I had my security camera system DVR in my bedroom closet and had to do something with the fan/s..it really makes a big difference..

Twistedquarter has good prices on new power supplys. The small fans are inexpensive. I would just get all new ones. It is well worth it.

Okay... new power supply... and new fans.

Anything in particular I need to know about the fans? Is it one size = one speed? Or are there different speeds for the same size? Any quick way to identify what I need to buy?

the fans you are replacing, should have the specs written on them

Perhaps those specs are on the reverse side... they aren't on the side facing out. I'll pull them off and have a look.

I've done some digging around... the fan sizes are odd sizes (dimension-wise they are off here and there as compared to fans sold by quiet PC fan sites. For example, two of the fans are 52mm x 52mm x 5mm and the closest quiet fan I've found is 50x50x10.

I have found NOS bearing-based fans. Think new bearing fans would be worth installing? Of should I try to fit odd sizes into the game?

Power supply here:
ebay.com link: itm
If you search "Merit fan" or Ion fan" on ebay in the arcade game replacement part category these will all pop up. 50mm vs 52mm doesn't really matter. As long as the voltage is correct you're fine. Just make sure the connector ends on what you buy matches what you have or you will have to cut and splice your old connectors to your new fans or just butt splice them in. Ball bearing fans should be quieter and longer lasting than cheapie fans but will cost a little more. In home use you will probably never wear new fans out

I always unplugged the small fans when I owned Megatouches. Even quieter fans were too loud for home use.

Thr power supply search for "flex atx" that way your not buying one someone is specifically selling to megatouch owners. You might need to splice a connector into the motherboard cable, but its easy stuff.

I was just wondering how you made out with quieting yours down? Mine sounds like a damn hair dryer.

Not real great. I replaced all of the fans, except one (in the base/neck) which I couldn’t access. Didn’t really seem to make a significant difference.

Bottom line, these things are loud!

Yep, 4 fans in a tiny box make for noise. And people think Spike fans are unbearable, Id hate to see how they would rip apart Merit for the noise these make.

I’m still hoping/wishing someone can port over the Megatouch software so it can run on a touchscreen PC. No more loud fans or crappy battery-powered security keys!!

I'm hoping someone can find out how to crack the security when my battery dies and my Megatouch becomes a giant brick. I'm closing in on the 10 year life pretty quick.

It's because Megatouch games are not games, they're ovens. That's what every game op I know says about 'em.

Mine is for sale, if you need to bake anything...

Yes, they are loud, especially some of the mid-late IONs that use the ASUS motherboard with the high speed blower style CPU fan. And they only get louder as fans collect dust bunnies, the machine runs longer and speeds up the variable-speed fans, etc.

I've been rebuilding and selling Megatouch games for over a decade, and these days I usually gut them entirely and rebuild them with newer parts that put out less heat, which means greater reliability and less fans which means less noise. They go from sounding like small vacuum cleaners to sounding like a proper desktop computer (and as dependable as one) but it's a bit of work. Not trying to drum up any sales here, just saying that like many things with enough money/time it can be done.

It has already been cracked but AMI (parent company of Merit) is still quite protective of their IP and will not allow free distribution of hacked software.

Why do you need to crack the software to replace the battery?

I replaced my HD with SSD, runs faster, cooler and quieter. New fans help a little but these games were made for loud environments. They never considered it needing to be quiet and the fans are necessary or the unit will burn out quickly. They do run hot.

To my knowledge, only the Force has been cracked and not the Ion.

The Force software is under a DMCA exception and can legally be cracked.

US Law provides an exception to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act issued in 2010, which among other things allows for reverse engineering and modification of

"Computer programs protected by dongles that prevent access due to malfunction or damage and which are obsolete. A dongle shall be considered obsolete if it is no longer manufactured or if a replacement or repair is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace."

Quoted from Edster:

Why do you need to crack the software to replace the battery?

The Megatouch games use a battery powered key (security dongle) that provides the software with the game serial number and encrypted game configuration data. When the battery attached to the key dies, you're screwed, the game will no longer boot and will essentially become a brick.
