Anyone got tricks to remove mildew smell?

So I haven't tested this but a friend who is a car audio installer has recommended cutting apples in half and putting them in the affected area to absorb smells in cars(smoke, mildew, etc.). Of course the smell is usually coming from upholstery and not wood and pinball parts but it seems like an inexpensive things to at least try.
