....and how could they make the pre-outs an **either or** situation?? Many people use an external amp for their Front L/R or Subs, and use the receiver's built in amps for the surrounds.

Just like brake pads on a car, it's not any certain length of time, its the physical wear.
Take the stylus up to your local vinyl shop, and look at it through their microscope.
If there are 2 flats on the side, the stylus is worn out.
If you have access to a microscope with good lighting, then set it at 200x and just look yourself.

Some unfortunate tracks from Meatpuppets, Springsteen and the Eagles (OMG why?) - but the deep cuts like Thunderclap Newman and Apples in Stereo more than make up for it.
