Quoted from waldo34:

Operation Mindcrime makes my short list of all time favorites.[quoted image]

One of the best conceptual albums ever made (IMO). Although the album made the charts it wasn't given the credit it deserved. What always got me about that bands early albums was the fact that they appeared to be overly produced but then they would pull it off live. The singer had a phenomenal voice, unfortunately no longer!

Quoted from MMP:

I've never heard of anyone delivering a record without cardboard packaging.

Keep in mind with Amazon they're now opening all kinds of local distribution places so I am going to assume here that you being in Raliegh they have one and that's where your order was fulfilled so it's basically coming from the local dist Center so they don't actually ship the record. It goes from the local dist center, into the delivery van to your door. It's not actually shipped.

Always thought this was such a bad album cover. Most people don't even look to see what it is due to the title and the cover. Columbia had produced some Half-Speed Mastered vinyl records for Floyd (The Wall, Animals, Meddle, DSOTM and Wish You Were Here). This album has songs from each of the albums, all Half-Speed Mastered.

Quoted from EdisonArcade:

Hey Gonzo, nice collection!
I'm curious though why all the Japanese pressings? Are you living there now, or are they superior in some way?

Quoted from guitarded:

Generally, Japanese pressings receive better quality control and for some eras, better vinyl formulations.
However, their mixes can be / tend towards bright in comparison to some original masterings.
As far as buying used goes, Japanese Collectors are fastidious and buying from them usually nets cleaner than advertised LPs in your mail.

To add to it.....

"Good sound quality. There are many factors that determine how a record will sound, including the quality of the master tapes used, how the record was mastered, and what kind of vinyl was used to press the records. Japanese records are often revered for their high quality sound.

American record companies that pressed records in the millions in the 1970s and early 1980s often used inexpensive or recycled vinyl to press their records, resulting in poor sound or excessive surface noise.

They would also press a high number of records from a single stamper, with each record pressed sounding worse than the one made just before it.

Most Japanese records were pressed using high quality “virgin” vinyl that was manufactured exclusively for pressing records. These records are often extraordinarily quiet and have little or no surface noise, allowing the listener a better listening experience.

In addition, English-language music titles were usually pressed in fairly small quantities in Japan, meaning all of the discs were likely pressed while the stampers were still fairly new.

For many years, Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, an American company known for their high-quality audiophile pressings, contracted the pressing of their records to JVC in Japan, as JVC had invented an exceptionally durable and quiet vinyl compound known as “Super Vinyl” that was unavailable anywhere else."

If you're interested in more about Japanese vinyl go to https://www.rarerecords.net/record-info/japanese-records/ this is where I pulled the above from.

#7272 2 years ago
Quoted from Fulltilt:

I didn't trash my records..... (: Just sayin'.

You didn’t have to, records pressed in the states were typically done so with contaminated polyvinyl chloride (pvc).

The term virgin vinyl derived from Japanese pressings as Japan used “new” pvc for their pressings. This along with the smaller production rune provided a better quality record.

In the States it was the usual quantity over quality approach.

If you want to step up your listening quality buy some Acoustic Sounds Quality Pressing or Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs pressings.

Just found this page, I just got into vinyl last year and of course am looking for all my childhood favs. Mainly looking for an OG Motley Crue Too Fast for Love on Leathur records, not the Electra release. If you have one or see one in the wild please let me know

Do you care which release? There were 3 releases of that title. Checkout https://www.discogs.com/master/94249-M%C3%B6tley-Cr%C3%BCe-Too-Fast-For-Love for the one you're looking for. Scroll down a little and you'll see the one you're after (the second listing is for cassette so skip that).

A good site to use is Discogs.com. The, if you want to say, drawback to Discogs is that most people selling on there are collectors so prices tend to be higher. It's a great resource though.

FREE VINYL FRIDAY!

So I enjoy the Norwegian band Airbag. The guitarist from Airbag put out a few solo records. Upon getting my copy the one record (double album set) had some warpage to it. Doesn't impact play but me being anal I sent a return request to get a new copy. They sent me one and told me to keep the other. Since I didn't pay for it I would like to offer it up for free to someone that would enjoy it.

If interested, go to the below URL and you can listen to the record. The first track is just music, skip to 4:15 for the second track and go from there.

If you're a fan of David Gilmour it's worth a listen. This guy doesn't hide the fact he's a fan of Gilmour (his youtube channel is called gilmour-ish). Some great guitar work and great sounding music.

Airbag - https://www.youtube.com/c/Airbagsound
Bjorn Riis - https://www.youtube.com/c/BjornRiisMusic

So if you're interested .. shoot me a PM and be glad to share this with ya!

along with liner notes that nobody over the age of 25 could read without a magnifying glass.

LOL - remember how the bigger artist had a lot of liner notes and pictures included in the vinyl version and when it came to putting them into the cassette you had to unfold the paper in the cassette like 10 times to see everything? And to your point, you couldn't read the notes and the pictures were so small you couldn't recognize who was who! AGhhh the good old days!

Not too difficult these days to do as most artist have caught on and instead of having 1500 copies of one color for a release they're doing 500 copies of 4 different colors. Not only releasing more from a production aspect but also getting people to buy more than one copy.

You would think that since Target is doing their own releases they would have record mailers as opposed to tossing the records into an oversized box.

Here's a heads up for KISS fans.
Pre order is open on the Kiss webstore thingy...
New remaster 3 LP blue Vinyl, Creatures of the Night.
Remastered album, bonus demo tracks, and live tracks.
I'm not a KISS fan... but Vinnie Vincent plays and writes on this album, it's the first hard rock album kiss released in 5 years, after they had Destroyed their Career with 3 Shit, non metallic albums.
Anyway its $60 bucks plus shipping, it's no deal, but the blue vinyl looks cool, and Vinnie makes them sound like a real metal band for once.
Cheers.
P.s. yes it's got Ace on the cover, but it was a marketing lie, this is the Vinnie show.
P.P.S. yes ! I ordered a copy, don't tell my friends or I'll never hear the end of it....

You’re not alone! Whilst I’m not a big KISS fan this album is a great listen. Vincent’s writing and Eric Carr’s insistence that the drums have more of a presence made this KISS’ (imo) their best album not to mention their hardest.

I hate Kiss but so many people seem to love it. There was a box set at the record store today, just couldn't bring myself to buy it. (I have ZERO Kiss).

Yeah I can understand but I think what set this aside is the fact Gene and Paul had little to do with the music writing and Michael Jackson (no not that one) did an excellent job in producing the record.

Nonetheless, if you want to give it a try and not pay so much.... go for the Half Speed Master edition. It's not binged out like the box set or the one above, it's just the record itself as it was released but Half Speed Mastered (who knows with KISS if this is true or not but ....)

My friend found it in a box in the back room, so he cant remember if it's a year old or 11.

Look on the back or even inner sleeve as typically when a record is reissued you will see the year the record was originally released and then the year for which it was rereleased. Anything like that on it?

Release history
The first mastering of Gish on CD was from Digital Audio Tape and appeared on Caroline Records, a subsidiary of Virgin Records. In 1994, after the success of follow-up Siamese Dream, the album was given a slight remaster and redesign and was reissued on the Virgin label.[37] Both editions credit Howie Weinberg as mastering engineer. In 2008, the Smashing Pumpkins announced a 17th anniversary box set re-release of the album that would include older bonus material, but this set experienced delays.[38] After finally negotiating the rights, Gish was re-issued in November 2011, being remastered on CD and Vinyl with extra tracks and packaging.[39]

The other issue, for a supposed HSM copy there’s surface noise on several songs.

Whilst I know this is a vinyl thread, wanted to ask if anyone has a reel to reel? I have a few tapes and want to look into getting a nice reel to reel. Wanted to get some input as what to look for exactly in a R2R player.

#8992 1 year ago
Quoted from Fulltilt:

Yes, I have been a reel to reel addict for many years.
If you're looking into one for general use and playing commercially available tapes, you will probably want to look into a 4 track machine.
I use a 2 track Revox with 15 ips capability. I think 2 track has the potential for better sound if you are wanting to record your own tapes.

Edit, just looked it up, the new version is 2 LP full album....
Now I gotta pick it up.

I know there were several albums like that as at that time artist were getting use to CD format which allowed for more time then the standard record. Vid interested in your take on these "Off the Soundboard" releases.
After the debacle ALIVE and ALIVE II records not actually being live one has to wonder how much of these are actually live. They certainly aren't as clean as the ALIVE and ALIVE II so think they may be legit.

Feel this is another cash grab by KISS as they can't record new music anymore as no one, other than the die hard fan, buys it.

Everything by KISS is a cash grab.
Having said that - the 3 LP set of Creatures is pretty good.

So true!
I actually have the Creatures and Destroyer Half-Speed Masters they came out with. To my surprise they are pretty good for a KISS release. Creatures I always thought was their best release.

Quoted from harig:

Nena does not sing in japenese, does she?

No! The record is from Japan. Japan produced their own vinyl records. Since Japan is a smaller country the albums aren't as massed produced thus the plates used to press the record aren't as worn. This leads to better sounding record. It's also been written that the Japanese's were more stringent when it came to sound and quality. For these reasons, people often collect the Japan versions over other countries.

Any engineering credits listed within? Mix, master, lacquer cutter? For vinyl mastering (lacquers) you can likely just look at the scribe in the dead-wax. Might just be some initials.

According to Wiki "It was produced by Adrian Quesada and mixed by Shawn Everett". On the inner sleeve it reflects "Mastered by: Emily Lazar with Chris Allgood at the Lodge".

I had three copies of this record for which all three I had to return.
1st record arrived with a ripple (warp) in it. Caused my tonearm to move up and down but also it's as if the grooves were not centered as the tonearm also moved side to side.
2nd record was warped like a bowl. When playing Record 1 Side 1 only the label on the record touched the table.
3rd record arrived flat as can be but the sound was horrible. A lot of static throughout Record 1 (yes I cleaned the record and stylus).

Odd thing with all three is that the first record (2 record set) had issues, not the second record.

Wound up sending all three back and gave up on buying this one. Might look at getting a regular black version but not sure I want to pay the higher cost to have a bunch of remixes.

45 rpm 2LP. Sounds great.
[quoted image][quoted image]

Agree, was just disappointed with the packaging though. Very cheaply made out of, what appears to be, cardstock material.

Quoted from Evets:

As far as cleaners go, I use the latest model (VC-E2) from Project. I’m happy with it, but I’d rather have the slick ultrasonic my friend has -- I believe it's the "DeGritter" -- but at 3K, it’s not going to happen. Have been meaning to look into the HummingGuru.

Saw an post on Instagram for company called LUCIDWAVE that's making, what appears to be, a knockoff of the Degritter. It's going to be on Kickstarter in the near future.

I hear great things about Degritter but folks I talk to and stuff I read it's a piece that could be easily duplicated for a lot less money.

Anyone have a VMP account that would be willing to let me use to order a box set for a holiday gift? Just not willing to sign up for a place that sends random records.

Quoted from nickrivers:

I hate that shit. I just don't even look at the exclusives anymore so I don't get FOMO.

I hear ya. I joined Third Man Records just to get the Syd Barrett records.

I just prefer to buy what I want and not receive random artist. Again, I am buying box set as a gift so thought I'd ask here.

Quoted from Gov:

I don't have an active membership right now but I think I can still buy things that are in the store. What are you looking for?

Anyone can buy but a member gets a discount. For the box set I’m looking at, the member price is 40$ cheaper.

Thanks for post.

I have been following this too, but it says it won’t ship until August 2024. Not giving any money to a startup for that length of time. Product does look interesting, however.

yeah the wait time of almost a year makes me wonder thinking about a Stern coffee Table book!

Quoted from fnosm:

I got the first one VH a couple weeks ago. It is dead silent, and sounded amazing. I'm definitely in for VHII though based on VH.

Agree, I found the sound to be amazing as well. Will certainly buy the others that are to come out.

Quoted from Reality_Studio:

Damn they are pricey

They're pricey for a digital recording. Unlike other companies, MoFi now (since 2015) uses digital in their process. For me, I still really like most of their releases.

Side note: You're not too far from where Mobile Fidelity is opening its new plant in Oxnard, CA.

Quoted from guitarded:

Not quite accurate. Like most other companies, MoFi uses Hi Res Files for their Mastering. They just tried to hide that and got caught out.
Blackbelt has already addressed the near impossibility of finding true AAA type mastering, anymore.
That said, MoFi is hit and miss. Their Mastering Style is not for everyone and many of their pressings, when A/B'd with clean Original Presses, just sound off.
I own a bunch of their LPs, but it is very rare where I feel those are the Best versions of a given title.

Agree, as I have come to find, for me, some of the titles they release the originals as well as reissues sound better.

Been hearing some of the Acoustic Sounds 75th Atlantic releases and they have been really good.

Like anything else, all comes down to individual preference.

Quoted from BlackBelt:

Once I was done restoring this lathe (c.1966) I connected over the phone with a previous owner. He claimed that it had cut the masters for Star Wars…so, in theory this machine cut that record.
[quoted image]

Awesome to see this! So now you can cut me a record ???

Another one on the pricey side but this sounds awesome! Anyone else buy these UHQR's from Acoustic Sounds? If so, what are you using for a jacket sleeve?

Now I understand.
I wonder how their grand pianos play?
[quoted image]

They were good enough for Freddie Mercury. Most of Queen's songs he wrote using a Yamaha Baby Grand.

First title I’ve purchased from Acoustic Sounds Atlantic Records 75th Anniversary Series. Sounds great and the jacket is done in a high gloss (the picture is taken with the wrap off already) thick cardboard.

Received my copy as well, along with Dylan's Greatest Hits. Unfortunately both arrived damaged (corners dinged). Put in a return request!

Whilst I still like their releases, MFSL packaging seems to be getting cheaper. Lid for this is warped to the point if I press down on top right corner the bottom left corner lifts up .75”. Also the paper used for the artwork is already separating from the cardboard.

Quoted from Fulltilt:

That’s sucks! I’ve had great luck so far. Customer service time?

Yeah sent them an email and they requested pictures. Never had an issue getting something replaced, so shouldn't be one.

Would prefer for them to use the same boxes they used for the Van Halen and Michael Jackson ones. One of the bigger boxes is bigger then the VH and MJ ones together.

Eric Wagner’s last recording before his untimely death. Ironically titled “In the Lonely Light of Mourning”.

Best known as the singer for the band Trouble.

Kaleo[quoted image]

Saw KALEO twice. They were the music group that played outside of, at the time, Heinz Field for the NHL Stadium Series game between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. That was 2017 and I didn't know who they were at the time but they sounded great live. Good enough to see them again few years ago at Red Rocks.

Have the album in the "Icelandic version" (record is half white and half black).

Quoted from zombywoof:

I received this in the mail today. Re-pressings of the original Elvis singles recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis! I think there is some other Sun swag in there, too. I just haven't opened it up yet. I will give you a review in the coming days.
[quoted image]

Interested in your review as mine is not too good. First three 45s I played are warped pretty bad and the hole isn’t centered. Haven’t even looked at the remainders.

The 45 adapter is bigger than the hole in the 45s so it’s useless, albeit nice.

Put an email into 3MR so we’ll see what they do.
