It's so cool to see Vinyl coming back! I've also been enjoying the search and acquisition for both old and new records again. Saved about 300 albums from the 70's & 80's, and having a good time with the newly remastered (lots of marketing hype) "180 Gram" audiophile colored and black wax releases. It's AMAZING what you can spend on a turntable these days - - the manufacturers must be watching the pinball market $5k, $10k, $20k, and upwards of $100k!!! Beautiful machines out there to spin ~ $5 to $50 discs!
For me, as cool as the new tables are to look at, I love the "vintage" feel of the equipment from "my" era and have restored a humble Pioneer system that was nice in the 70's (except for the speakers which are new). It all sounds great and I like the exercise of getting up to flip the records and turn up/down the volume

Keeping it pinball, I hooked up a Bluetooth transmitter to the Tape Output of the receiver so I can listen to records in the game room! Gotta love modern technology (sometimes).

Keep 'em spinning and flipping out there guys!

Yes, it's a Pioneer SX-1250 that's been re-capped. Sounds great and it does weigh a lot ~80lbs or so. Had to reinforce the cabinet that it's sitting in
The turntables are PL-630's. I really love the equipment from back then. Prices have gone thru the roof on ebay! Would LOVE an SX -1980, but can't part with $4k people are asking for them. Hell, that's more than half the cost of a new pin! Priorities you know

Fun soundtrack from Ace Ventura, has some Jim Carrey movie speech tracks on each side after the last song. It's like a "mini" record that's about 15 seconds long. Cool looking vinyl too! Miami colors

Quoted from Goronic:

I have a question. I have a Yamaha RX-A3030 receiver that has a phono input. My speakers are the Klipsch reference premier line that include the RP-280F so needless to say power isn't an issue. I got a crosley C100 turn table and it sounds nice, BUT when I play CDs or Bluerays it is very crisp and loud, on phono the sound is still good but I have to turn it up twice as loud to get the same volume (so -40 CD takes -10 for phono). Do I need a preamp? Better cables? Better turntable???

What kind of cartridge is installed? Moving coil or moving magnet? If it's a moving coil, you typically need a preamp as they have a much lower output.
That being said, I have a Yamaha RX-A3010 and it does take a little extra volume with a Shure M97xE cartridge. Other receivers amplify it just fine, but the Yamaha has slightly lower gain. Looking at the specs...the Yamaha has a 3.5 mV sensitivity, and other receivers like old Pioneer's have a 2.5mV sensitivity so it produces more sound at the lower volume control levels.

And the white vinyl is pretty cool too.

Been into soundtracks lately and have always been a Rick Wakeman fan, so I rolled the dice on this having never seen the movie "The Burning".
It's AWESOME! All the great synthesizer and keyboard playing you'd expect from him. Hit lucky 7's this time.

Looking for a copy of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" but it has to be the version with the mountain on the cover as shown. Not a big fan of the movie, but the soundtrack is AMAZING! Prices people are asking are INSANE! Until it's either re-released on vinyl or I find one for a reasonable price... I'll just keep having Alexa stream it

Quoted from gonzo73:

Went to a small mostly used vinyl store today, and dug for two hours, found some great 1$ 4$ and 8$ dollar records.
Usually never bother with the dusty boxes, but turned out alot of fun.
27 records for 165$, 3 were brand new records so that was $65, so not bad haul.
And Jane!

The Isleys Live , 2lp.
Recorded in 1972, at the Bitter End club.
Released 1973.

Holy shit, Earnie Isleys blazing , and I mean atomic inferno, Guitar solo's are breathtaking.
Side D is just astounding, they tear up Neil Youngs Ohio right into Hendrix Machinegun.

A fun little find The music.... eh, a little disco and jazzy sounding and it does have a track with the Playboy pinball sounds mixed in. It will probably end up in a record frame on the wall near the machine.

Here's another find in the realm of pinball... The music is decent for a live recording, but the vocal mix is probably THE worst I've ever heard. Muffled and unintelligible. It actually hurt to give it an obligatory listen. lol It's all in the interest of picture frame art for the game room, and for this purpose the cover is pretty cool.

Ended up buying three albums at the thrift store today that were missing their jackets. What do you vinyl heads typically do when the jacket is missing?

Well, speaking from experience... if you like the album, you'll end up buying it again with the cover If it's just the inner sleeve, no big deal. You can buy those in packs of 10 or more. Depends on your level of OCD. lol

#9617 1 year ago

Got the AT-LP2022 and with the exception of it being full manual (used to auto return) I really like it. Sounds great, I love the look, and static due to it being acrylic really isn't a big deal maybe because I keep my humidity in the house at a reasonable level. Happy 3000 units made- -- GONE!

Yeah it was still Powered up.... it just started Glitching out left channel... I fiddled with input knob.. it came back for a while... then I flipped the record and it completely cut out with a nice Crunchy Zzzzztttt.
It was still lit up.. and I sniffed the vents.. no burning smell.. so I'm guessing it's cold Soldering, bad connections.
It sounded great, until the very end...
Its cool... now I have two recievers that need servicing, it'll get me to drive down to Crazy Fred at Classic Audio repair in San Diego.

Too bad you guys are so far away... I've been repairing stereo & TV equipment (and pinball machines) for a very long time! It's fun, especially the classic equipment from the 60's-80's!

WHO's Next 1971, first U.S. stereo Pressing.
In decent shape to !!
My favorite Rock album of all time...
The leap in complexity of Pete's songwriting is astounding. His use of Synthesizers was so far ahead of its time.
And if you dig into the 10-15 songs left off the album, it's even more breathtaking.
Naked Eye
Pure and Easy
Water
Greyhound Girl
Teenage Wasteland
Put the Money Down
Mary
Join Together
Let's See Action
The Relay
All amazing songs left after the Lifehouse project was abandoned in favor of a single record which became Who's Next.

Quoted from Coyote:

Appreciated! I won't get a replacement until next week or so (on work trip this weekend), so I'll waste some work hours looking at both that've been recommended.

For what it's worth and hopefully not more confusing... I've really been enjoying the Audio-Technica AT-VM95SH which has the Shibata stylus. I have a side by side setup with identical turntables.. One is using the Shure M97xE and the other is the Audio-Technica AT-VM95SH. My findings are more detail in the music and less surface noise from "less than perfect" records.

Anyway, have fun and enjoy your vinyl!

Quoted from Shredso:

Not really sure why I bought this other than a cool factor or collectibility. I can't imagine listening more than once. We'll see....
[quoted image]

LOl, I got them too. Kinda fun but probably future record-frame wall art... or just to keep on deck when pinball friends come over to hang out and play.

Enjoying some Lana Del Rey - Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd. Unusual cover and really nice music.

Been a while for me, but this showed up today and man, it sounds AMAZING. Analogue Productions produces one of the best pressings you'll ever hear IMO.
They certainly did the late, great Jeff Beck right!

New arrivals on deck..
Genesis Live. Recorded 1973.
1983 Japanese pressings.
Return of the Giant Hogweed never disappoints.

Love the classic Realistic receiver!

Quoted from JRC6000:

Found this in my grandparents house. Anyone know anything about it? Is this worth getting working and maybe getting a turntable to go with it?
[quoted image]

For sure get it fixed up. I just restored a HK 430 for a friend and he says it's his favorite receiver. Very warm sound. Not a ton of power, but that's not super important in most cases. Worth keeping and enjoying something that's been in your family as well! Have fun!

I don't think I've seen that Kenwood before. Which model is that?

That's the KA-400 from 1980!! Kenwood made some really nice equipment!

Quoted from Gov:

How does this one sound? I have two copies of Ultraviolence (regular cover) and they are both horrid and noisy. I almost went for this one but at the high price I didn't want to take another chance at it sounding like rice crispies with the gain turned all the way up.

Well Gov, sorry that's been your experience. I am quite happy with the copy I received as it's not noisy at all. I know first hand how one pressing to another can make a big difference, but I'm pleased this time around. I bought it from https://thesoundofvinyl.com in Sept. for $44.99 + ship and Discogs folks are asking 2x that now. Hang tight, they seem to re-release these "fairly" regularly. There are a few (between $59 and $69 ) on ebay - sealed blue/violet for what it's worth.

Picked up these little gems from Nick at Toad Hall Books and Records after seeing his post here. Very cool guy and lots of great selections in the online store @ ToadHallonline.com.
These albums are (besides the sexy covers) very nice recordings of classic jazz female vocalists - some very well known and others maybe not as much (at least by me). The likes of Marilyn Monroe, Lena Horne, Brigitte Bardot, Ginger Rogers, Julie London, Sophia Loren, and others are featured on these colored vinyl, 180g pressings. Very pleased and fast shipping too! Thanks Nick!

This came in all the way from Japan today. An orchestral version the classic ELP album, Tarkus. It's amazing! The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra performing.

Quoted from gonzo73:

That's Amazing, never heard of it.

I hadn't either before a couple of weeks ago. Stopped into a new audio store in the area (Alma Music & Audio - I think there's one in San Diego, CA too) and the guy threw this on in the listening room after I asked for ELP. Blew me away, so I went home and found it on Discogs.

If you're an ELP fan, you'll love this album. Early Keith Emerson.. even an early version of Rondo that ELP did as well. Really great!

Quoted from Clytor:

I picked this up at the Capital Audio Fest show yesterday.
[quoted image]

I went to CAF as well. What a great show. SO much vinyl to look thru and amazing equipment as well! Hope you had a good time. I brought home a "toy" I never thought I would. Can't wait to set up the new TT!

#11721 5 months ago
Quoted from Clytor:

Oooh. Do tell! I heard some nice systems. The Nordost room had a Dagostino integrated amp running through Dynaudio Confidence 20s. That shit sounded amazing.

For sure, there were SO many great sounding rooms. I think my favorite sound was in the VPI Jefferson room where Acora had their VRC speakers set up. They are granite enclosures weighing about 450lbs each and just so clear and powerful (with a $200k price tag to boot). So many rooms, you get the equivalent of "nose blind" to sound, but that room stood out as memorable.

Saw this on-line today and thought it was very clever! A record weight that doubles as a tonearm lift at the end of the record. A little pricey, but what isn't these days? Check out the video: https://www.mindpoprevolution.com/

Like Fulltilt, I use the record weight because they look cool, but I can't hear a difference with or without it. The weight mentioned above does two things: 1 - it "might" make records sound better, and 2 - it definitely lifts the arm off the record to prevent stylus wear if I happen to be out of the room when the record ends. Thinking about getting one vs. the trip wire devices ....

Quoted from gonzo73:

I was watching some top 10 album videos, I would love to see what your absolute favorite albums are, you know favorites.... not best all time, that's a different discussion.
I love some cheese, that I would never argue is genius material.
I'm digging through the collection, narrowing down a 10 album list.

It'll take a while to figure that out! I'm sure there will be some Genesis, Kansas, ELP, Pink Floyd to start.. Going to be a nasty, rainy day tomorrow, so a great time to look into it.

Today was a super day here in VA, and spent some time in a Barnes and Noble that just opened up. They have a great vinyl section and I managed to do some unexpected damage to the bank account. Here are a couple of the highly contrasting pulls from today's "spree"...

Checking out the features of this test album. Azimuth adjusted! To be fair, I'm not sure "I" can hear much difference than before it was adjusted as the sine waves weren't "that" different in amplitude, but it was interesting to see the changes happen with small adjustments. In any case, I learned something and whether I can hear the difference it or not, now I know it's right, the stylus will last longer by wearing more evenly over time, and it's better for the record groove too. Fun!

I've gotta say that this forum is great for discovering new music. Everyone posts pics of albums they enjoy, and many I've either never heard of before or didn't know existed. When I see something interesting, I stream a little on Amazon Music to check it out and that has led to many vinyl acquisitions that I really enjoy having in the collection.

A general "thanks" for just doing what you do and posting what you like!

Quoted from Clytor:

Hyped to get this one. However this has served as a lesson to buy records from record dealers or vinyl collectors when dealing with shipping. This was shipped in this box as seen. It suffered creases in the jacket and a break in the spine. Luckily the record was unscathed.
[quoted image][quoted image]

It's amazing what some folks will do (or don't do) when they ship things. I've seen turntables arrive completely destroyed because the sender neglected to remove the platter. It falls off in shipping and destroys everything inside the dust cover, including the dust cover!
Glad your record survived at least!

I'm a little late to the game probably, but I just got this Rammstein album, Zeit (means Time) and really liking it. Barely understand a word, but the music is awesome! 2x 45rpm 180gm and great quality.

Diving back into the Genesis catalogue..
Genesis, Wind and Wuthering.
Blood on the Rooftops might be the most beautiful Genesis song, a Hackett Collins co write.
Tony Banks is masterful here, epic after epic.
Great album for a stormy weekend.

Just ordered the Genesis, Wind and Wuthering album. Not an awesome Japanese pressing, but looking forward to adding it to the collection just the same! Good call, Gonzo! Sorry about your recent mishap too.
