How did I miss this thread? Anyways, add me to the mix. Technics SL-1310 + JBL 4410 monitors or JBL 120ti + Yamaha AS-801 or Sansui AU-7700 or Marantz 1060. As you can see, I like integrated amps, vintage in general (with an exception for the modern Yamaha), and I like to switch up the equipment from time to time. Most of my records have been with me since the 70s and early 80s, but I've added several more in the past few years. Half of my relatively humble LP collection is pictured below.

"Lol at "vinyl". They're record albums." Just be glad that some of us didn't refer to them as "Licorice Pizza".

The always cool Billy Zoom playing while seated? John Doe has clearly aged since I last saw them. DJ Bonebrake looks largely unchanged. Time passes... My own head of hair has plenty of gray too. Great music. I should post a picture of their great live album from the Hollywood a Go Go.

#8372 1 year ago

Yes but Page and Plant were seated for an entirely different reason. Age catches up with all of us, if we live long enough. My friends and I planned on driving from NY to Philadelphia to see Zeppelin for the first time in our lives when Bonham died. A bummer on many levels.

Just reposting your picture of Rhino Records for the same reason(s) you've mentioned. I was there yesterday. It's a nice set up, but I treat records stores with more than the usual amount of nostalgia and I miss their presence in the college town of Claremont. Picked up some nice used copies of classic rock from the 70s. Good to see the familiar faces.

Quoted from SonicZone:

But the move was necessary -- an issue of escalating rent. And the way I look at it, we're extremely lucky they're still with us when so many other B&M music stores, both chain locations and independents, have met states of demise the past decade or so.

Yes, you're absolutely right, of course. The 40% rent increase forced the end of an era, and thankfully they've survived and look to have a good path forward. Lots of 20 year olds in the checkout line with LPs under their arms. The loss of the Laemmle movie theater will hurt, too. The City of Trees is now the City of Restaurants. Anyway, back to the regularly scheduled programming with a picture of two duplicate records (upgrades) for the humble collection.

Picked up this cult classic(?) from 1983. Most known for the collection of guest vocalists ranging from Ozzy to Mel Torme. I don’t recall the others with 100% certainty, but I believe Marshall Crenshaw is one of them. I should probably look at the sleeve before posting, but oh well. Edged out for record of the year by Thriller. It’s a fun romp.

It would have bugged me, so I did five seconds of research and realized I left of Mitch Ryder and Doug Fieger (The Knack) from the list of guest vocalists. So much for my memory.

Quoted from Clytor:

I was eyeing one of these that was for sale locally. Nice looking unit!

I've had other Marantz receivers and integrated amps, but this is the one I've kept. Great sound, relative to other sources from the era, lovely symmetry, and incredibly easy to work on, if needed. The compact form factor is also nice, given the space requirements for the monster receivers and amps of the 1970s. I normally use it as the anchor for my office system.

#10629 1 year ago

Have you been to the new Montclair Rhino records location ?

I've been about eight times since they relocated. I still get a tinge of sadness when I walk by their old place in Claremont. I'll stop by Pennylane in Upland on occasion, as well as Zoinks in the Pomona Arts District. I rarely visit the Glass House Record Store due to the lesser level of organization. I'll stop offering more than you've asked for. Sorry. I get carried away sometimes.

Anyway it's a stellar Pressing, it might be the best I've heard, the sleeve is really thin and cheap, but the vinyl is dead silent.

I've noticed this with most MOV pressings. I'm always happy to add another to the collection. Both my newer copy and my vintage copy of Who's Next are problematic. Thanks for the reminder that I should track down the MOV version.

Apparently sat one of the titles I bought down and didn't get it in my bag and didn't make it home with me. Luckily it one of the cheap ones. Still sucks tho.

The Gin Blossoms album title neatly offers the response I was going to write.

I definitely could hear the difference between the Ortofon 2M Blue Stylus on their RT85 and the Nagaoka MP-110 on their RT85N.

And which did you prefer? I think I know the answer, but I certainly could be wrong. A good record cleaning process goes a long way towards improving sound quality, if you don't do so already. Enjoy the new set up.

#11703 5 months ago

I'm also a big fan of the 110, especially with certain genres and records in less than stellar condition. I still have one around here, but haven't used it in quite a while as I moved up the Nagaoki food chain a bit.

In 1979 I made a cassette to cassette duplicate of my friend’s legit copy. I played that thing to death. All these years later I finally own a legitimate copy (and vinyl to boot). R. U. Ready 2 Rock? Yes I am.

MOV edition, by the way.

As far as cleaners go, I use the latest model (VC-E2) from Project. I’m happy with it, but I’d rather have the slick ultrasonic my friend has -- I believe it's the "DeGritter" -- but at 3K, it’s not going to happen. Have been meaning to look into the HummingGuru.

Is that an OG Cars Move like this ?!

It's the one and only (as far as I know) 2011 pressing. I must have picked up Move Like This on vinyl (in Rhino in 2011, 2012) a half dozen times with the thought that I'd buy it "next time", and then it was gone. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. I was surprised and delighted to stumble across it today.

I pull this old chestnut out when my older brother-in-law stops by as it reminds him of his parents. The cover is in crap shape but the vinyl is in excellent condition.

Thanks for the link, Dragon. I'd heard a few things about Wilson's remixes through internet word-of-mouth, but I enjoyed this much more complete interview and explanation and story. And yes, I also have the original pressing of Aqualung, but I like the Steven Wilson version much better. Thanks again.

#12479 74 days ago
Quoted from guitarded:

I have about 7-8 Pressings of Aqualung.

The DCC Pressing is the one.

I don't like the Wilson Remix near as much.

I'll have to track that version down. Thanks for "making" me spend more money. Do you like the Wilson better than the original?

#12493 73 days ago
Quoted from Dragon:

but that s not to say the wilson mix is anything more than different

I suspect that difference is why I like it, a nice change of pace from the original thanks to the slight "reinvention". Oddly, there are other bands/albums for which any deviation from the original sound annoys me. I am consistently inconsistent.

Dropped my MOV copy of this album and put two divots in the vinyl. Ugh. Rather than order an MSFL copy for $60, decided to give this pressing by Friday Music a try. One nice little tidbit is that “Warren RIP” is etched in the deadwax.

Thanks for reminding me of their existence. I only know Eyes of a Stranger, thanks to the Valley Girl movie/soundtrack (if I remember correctly). I'll have to check out some of their other songs. And add my appreciation for Speaking in Tongues and Diesel and Dust. Nice scores.

The Early Moods cover, and the tens of thousands similar covers that came before, remind me that I want to take a family photo this year, album cover style. Stand in a haphazard line and look serious... Some of you look at the camera, some of you look off into the distance. I'll crop it to album sleeve size. That said, time to go check out Early Moods online. Thanks for giving me something new to investigate.

That ‘grunge’ record is totally a bootleg/unlicensed. Hows the sound?

It definitely has a bootleg sound, but it's a good bootleg. On the bootleg ten scale, I'd give it at least an 8, probably a 9. And at $5 in the bargain bin, it was a gamble I was happy to take.
