Quoted from PoMC:

Along with Death and Taxes, another inevitability is there's always a Dan Fogelberg album in every record bin at the flea market. Oak Ridge Boys would be a close 2nd.

Don't forget this one:

Cars_-_Panorama (resized).jpgCars_-_Panorama (resized).jpg

There was a time when the used album bins were full of these.

Had these pictures in another post, but I think they kinda fit here.
My friend closed his record store last month, and gave me the counter.
I think it's pretty cool! Now I need to find a place to put it.

Quoted from SteveO:

They were selling vinyl at the Yes concert last night. $25 each was steep and I have all their early stuff anyway on vinyl.

Who is playing bass for them now?

#371 7 years ago
Quoted from SteveO:

$25 each was steep ........

I agree. Seems that all the new vinyl is pretty expensive. I haven't bought a new one in quite a while.

Used ones though, at $3.00 - $5.00.......That's a bargain!

#432 7 years ago
Quoted from Jam_Burglar:

I've been digging for a LONG time and I have to say that Zappa records are just not that easy to come by, especially on the cheap. One Size Fits all may be the only one I've ever found below $10. Zappa fans are just that hard core. I've got lots George Duke records though.

Yes, Zappa has a huge catalog, but they almost never turn up in the used album bins.

A few years ago I found a pristine copy of Sheik Yourbouti at a flea market for $3.
The vendor asked me why I wanted to buy it, because.....you know.....Zappa sucks.

I said, "why are you selling it then?" as I handed him the money.

Unfortunately he (Zappa) has that stigma with some people.

Their loss.

#445 7 years ago
Quoted from barkerlake:

Any Townes Van Zandt fans here?

I have the CD box set.

He has been called the "songwriter's songwriter".

I would urge anyone who is not familiar with him to explore his work.

E

#487 7 years ago
Quoted from Fulltilt:

Yes, I have a few. I love good 45s. Wish I had a nice juke to go along with them.

The record store I frequent has a MOUNTAIN of 45's. At $.50 a piece, it's tempting!

I'm thinking of getting a jukebox. What a blast it would be to grab a bunch of them and fill the jukebox.
Good or bad.....they would certainly be fun to listen to.

#512 7 years ago

So, you asked me what I think.

What's the point?

Kind of like putting a modern engine in a Model A Ford.

Just my opinion.

E

#526 7 years ago
Quoted from pinster68:

Listening to Sargent Peppers this morning, and for the first time with a set of decent cans. Wow, seriously never gave this album the necessary credit. Such great detail I haven't heard before.

I've been doing that a lot lately, too.
Listening to old familiar albums with "new ears".

There was a lot of really good stuff coming out of Australia in the eighties!

#582 7 years ago
Quoted from Fulltilt:

Anyone ever listen to Dregs? Steve Morse was an incredible guitarist. I used to catch them regularly at a local club in Chapel Hill in the 70's.

I was lucky enough to see them in 1982 at, of all places, the Philadelphia Zoo.
The Hooters opened up for them.

What a strange mix of people in the audience.

So I snapped a couple quick pics last night. One of my living room with the stereo/quadraphonic gear in the back corner and another of the two stacks: the right stack for stereo and the left stack adding 4-channel sources and the rear channel amplification. I built the walnut stands to house the equipment with the turntables on top (and the walnut stands for the 4 JBL L100s in the corners), but later added the Sony CD-changer to the stereo stack.

A thing of beauty!

The record store we go to has a pile of 45's for $.50 a piece.
A whole box for $20.00.

So I grabbed a box without even looking inside.
Spent the whole weekend listening to them.

What a blast!

A lot of sappy hits from the sixties and seventies. A lot of stuff we never heard of.
A pile we didn't even get to yet.

A strong argument for getting a jukebox!

901's are nice speakers, but a little weak in the low end.
You'll need a pretty powerful amp to drive them.
And, as said earlier they have a special eq that you will need.

Yeah..I have one of those too, and it works great after many years.

I was looking for something that worked on the dirty second hand records, that I am buying now.
I saw an ultrasonic unit last weekend, but it was close to $5000!!!!!

Zappa Plays Zappa? Or are his money grubbing siblings still blocking him?

I got to see Frank only once, in 1988. I believe it was his last tour.
What Dweezil does is commendable. Bringing Frank's music to new audiences and keeping it alive.

Quoted from zaki:

ok, i need to ask and it's a stupid question. does vinyl really sound better than a cd or high res download? i had a vinyl player as a kid, but i didn't use it for music. more for children read along books. i've gotten mixed answers from some folks if it does sound better i'm interested in getting a player, but sort of wonder it is will sound better or would it be for more enthusiasts?

It's the whole experience.
Removing the record from the sleeve, the ritual of cleaning it and dropping the needle on it.
Reading the liner notes and artwork while you're listening to it.

And, I think that most here would agree with me, is buying them !
Nothing beats hours spent browsing through the bins at your favorite record store.
And yes......I like the way they sound too!

I assume it doesn't get the paper portion of the record wet? Does it use regular water and do you need to buy replacement parts for it? Thanks.

There is a solution that you add to the water. There are two brushes that contact the record. All of that is replaceable.
The label doesn't get wet.
