Giving this a digital listen now. I dig it even though it's quite different from their older stuff. Thrash!
Quoted from Jason43:It's basically Slayer meets Anthrax, with the singer from Faith No More.
Indeed. I think my favorite Mike Patton efforts are the EP he did with Dillinger Escape Plan and the first Tomahawk record. I still have a special place for the first Bungle record. It came with some Cyclone callouts!
Quoted from snakesnsparklers:I'm about 10% through this thread so far and am drawn to the hardware the most. I really love the look of these vintage '70s receivers. I imagine that rebuilding them consists of replacing caps, transistors, etc. just like a pinball circuit board so that should be easy for me if needed. I see lots of beautiful Kenwood, Marantz, Pioneer, Technics vintage receivers in here. Any general tips or tricks for someone new to all of this? I haven't even convinced the wife yet to put a big receiver in her room but I am thinking she may like one of these over a modern receiver.
I said the same thing on here recently about the vintage gear . Old audio gear can suffer from components that are past their prime just like old monitors, pinball pcbs, etc. I recently did a capacitor/transistor kit on my Kenwood KR-5150. I also swapped out the incandescent bulbs for leds. While I do generally like warm white leds in my pins, going forward, I might stick with replacing dead lamps with incandescent bulbs.

Quoted from jazzmaster:My awesome wife gave me this for Christmas. A near mint copy of one of the very few Cure releases missing from my collection
[quoted image]
I have pined over that 12" for years. Congrats!
Nice screen name too. I have a 64' and an aluminum neck partsMaster.
Quoted from vid1900:What OP-amps do you have installed?
I have the Burson v6 Vivids in it right now. I might try some of the Stacattos to see how they sound. Dragon I play stuff on my iTunes and I use Tidal.
Quoted from Dragon:I did not know that OP-amp rolling was a thing ,that Burson is cool
It is. You can “roll” in any DAC but Burson kind of caters to it, socketing the chips. They sell a variety of op amps with different signatures. One of the other selling points was that it was used on eBay for about half off of the new price.
Quoted from Shredso:I saw this in a record store last weekend. Heartwork was one of my favorite albums of the 90's. I'm not sure why, but I don't think I've ever checked out any of there other stuff. How is it?
Necroticism and Tools Of The Trade are my favorite recordings of theirs.
Quoted from Dragon:amazon.com link »
I bought a few of these to make them more portable , I suppose you could separate seasonal music , I added rubber feet to the lids so i can stack 2 of them or you could store them someplace else. they're perfect if you have a record player in your car
[quoted image]
These rolling crates are great to stow vinyl under pins.

Is that not a backglass?
[quoted image]
Gish is such a great record. I need to get that on vinyl.
Quoted from lasermel:Ever go to the record store and come out with something you never thought you would? Today was one of those days at the CD Cellar in Falls Church, VA, and I'm pretty happy about it!
[quoted image][quoted image]
I’ll have to check this out the next time I’m in NOVA.
Quoted from Jman44:[quoted image]
I'm checking this out on Tidal now. I'm digging it.
Quoted from lasermel:Another soundtrack on the doorstep today.. this one with a little classical vibe along with some Christmas cheer (in March)!
[quoted image]
That's worth it for the album art alone.
Quoted from snakesnsparklers:I'm already considering upgrading my turntable but my wife would really like to retain the full automatic operation. I was looking into the Fluance models but they are only auto-stop. Are there any current offerings that are similar in quality to Fluance but still full-auto? Belt drive is fine and I don't need an integrated pre-amp. For reference I'm currently using an AT-LP3 which is GREAT except it's not very heavy and is very sensitive to vibrations/stepping on the floor near the unit causing skipping.
I haven’t heard this table myself but perhaps an option for you? https://www.thorens.com/en/thorens®-td-102-a-en.html
Quoted from snakesnsparklers:That is awesome, thanks for the link. $1k is a bit too much for me
I hear ya. It seems like the more expensive the hifi equipment, the worse the deprecation. You can get some great deals on stuff that is 4-5+ years old.
Quoted from Evets:Bringing the trusty old 1060 back on line, along with The Black Keys.
[quoted image]
I really need to clean the face plate of the 1060...
I was eyeing one of these that was for sale locally. Nice looking unit!
Quoted from Jason43:[quoted image]
I loved this record in high school. I'd like to hear how that album sounds on vinyl. Something about the digital version of that release has this weird slurry sound on the upper frequencies. I think it's the guitar.
Quoted from vid1900:[quoted image]
After working on game routes for over 20 years, I can assure this is much scarier in the digital downloading juke era vs the cd box era(pictured). Also, the bar owners would generally give the operators a run down of things they DON'T want in their jukes. Also, I'd probably like what a guy in a Cannibal Corpse shirt played.
Quoted from vid1900:Years ago, TouchTunes started letting you play songs on their jukeboxes, even if you are not in the bar.
You just open the app, find your favorite bar, then play your 40 year old Cannibal Corpse tracks, while everyone else is grovin to Doja Cat.
This is one of life’s gifts.
I streamed this release first. It was as great as I expected. Pressing sounds good so far as I’m going through it. I bought two different Phoebe Bridgers records and both pressings has problems. Her label needs to find a new pressing plant if they haven’t already.

Based on the purpose of thread, I'm assuming he sees a really sweet turntable in the distance.
Quoted from beergut666:Metallica died with Cliff Burton, the band was never the same. And Justice for All is the start of their decline, and everything that came after is fucking garbage.
Yeah, I feel like their best era was Ride The Lightening to And Justice For All with Master Of Puppets being their peak. More power to them for all their success after that. It's an age old scenario with a given band's greatest commercially successful material not coinciding with their best art.
Quoted from Good-Times:Running in the new cart with some Boards of Canada
[quoted image]
I feel like i have seen this table before. Which one is it?
Quoted from lasermel:Just saw this pre-release on lightintheattic.com: Gonna take a chance.
[quoted image]
I ordered Vol.1 and Vol.2. I'd love to see a Vol.3 with SOF and BOP.
Quoted from jazzmaster:[quoted image]
Some versions of that album are worth some cake. I hope they do a RSD remaster of that one some time.
Quoted from 30FathomDave:Saw these guys last night. Great show!
[quoted image]
I'm going to see them in June in Maryland. I haven't seen them since 1991. I'm a Cure nerd enough that I have been playing in a Cure tribute act for over a decade. Ha. That Tomahawk record is sick too.
Quoted from Tortelvis:Tonight’s spin[quoted image]
Does that table run a bit fast with carbon fiber? JK, what table is that? Looks like a Hana cart.
Quoted from Coyote:Put this on my platter today.. Always a 5FDP fan..
[quoted image]
I had this exact turntable when I was a kid. Awesome to see it!
Quoted from Gov:[quoted image]
That linear tracker on the stands is so cool looking.
Quoted from Gov:Nice find! I looked for the 10" for a while but never could find it for a not crazy price. Finally caved and bought the repress. Sadly like most of the other Radiohead pressings, it isn't the best, but better than nothing.
Yeah, decent shape for $20. They had two copies of Kid A and one copy of Amnesiac on 10". Amnesiac was $46 though. I left that one...maybe should have scooped?
Quoted from gonzo73:Welcome to the party.
Nice SX-737.
You're going to have to take a better picture of the record...
Led Zeppelin Bootleg ??
Agreed. 737 looks rad.
Quoted from Gov:My SL-10 began having some intermittent speed issues and some power gremlins. Decided to recap it today. So far so good, remains to be seen if it will resolve the issues long term. While I was in there, I did find some suspect work that somebody had done in the past, in regard to wiring and cable management choices....resolved all of that and did some basic maintenance while I was at it. Hopefully it will be good for another 40 years :p
[quoted image][quoted image]
One of these came up locally for $800. I absolutely don't need it but they sure are neat looking. Especially on that stand. How does the tracking force work on those. Does the tilt of the stand require any adjustments?
Quoted from Gov:I love the Beths. I need to get the new album, but have heard some of the pressings are kinda bad. How does yours sound and what pressing is it if you don't mind me asking?
Future Me Hates Me seemed ok. Expert In A Dying Field was seemingly not as good. I mean all of that, pressing wise. The material on all of their full length albums is really great.
Quoted from Gov:Been listening this a lot since Clytor posted it. Best new album I have heard this year.
Sir Chloe - I Am the Dog
Also in a funny coincidence, we are adopting a dog tomorrow, who happens to be named Chloe.
[quoted image][quoted image]
Glad you’re digging it!
Quoted from 30FathomDave:The Fragile is my all-time favorite album. Deviations has got some gems on it.
I’m about to take Tomahawk’s Mit Gas album for a spin. This is the “fool’s gold” variant (limited to 500) from Revolver. I’ve got the same variant of the self-titled album, Anonymous, and Oddfellows. Mit Gas and the S/T are definitely my two favorites of their discography.
[quoted image]
I almost picked up the first record, the other weekend. I had too many records in my hand already...I did order their last album on vinyl which is pretty solid.
Quoted from Fulltilt:Summer is going. Time for the Monterey Pop festival. The minicade is on free play. Drop in.

Did I actually wake up this morning? Shrek playing Dragons Lair, in an arcade, on top of a Klipschorn feels like a dream.

Some nice gear here. What is your signal chain?
Quoted from Fulltilt:What’s on your turntable tonight?
[quoted image]
I've been all digital tonight while rebuilding Meteor drop targets...I'll get some vinyl on the table tomorrow.
Quoted from Gov:I love Biffy Clyro. Sadly, several of their pressings are kind of crap. "The Myth of Happiness Everafter" in particular. Some are great though. My repress of 'Only Revolutions' is stellar.
I still need to get Similarities and Opposites.
Yeah, I'd like to get a copy of Only Revolutions and Opposites for sure. My wife is really into them and accidentally ordered the cd of Opposites instead of the LP. Interestingly, the CD sounds better than the Max version on Tidal. This is using my Mac to stream and as a cd transport but running both via Toslink to my DAC. I tried some older cds and compared them this way. The most obvious differences were ones that had been remastered.
Quoted from ourdave76:I’ve had that album since the mid 80s when I discovered the band Budgie. John Thomas was in GHB before joining Budgie in 1979.
[quoted image][quoted image]
I don't think I've seen that Kenwood before. Which model is that?
Quoted from lasermel:That's the KA-400 from 1980!! Kenwood made some really nice equipment!
Awesome. I have a KR-5150 and a KD-3070. I think I have a soft spot for the vintage Kenwood gear because my dad had their ham radio gear, back in the day.
Quoted from Lermods:What a great band to listen to on vinyl! You really hear things you might not on other media. Playing on a technics sl-1500 through a marantz 2220b.
[quoted image]
I need to scoop this one on vinyl.
Quoted from Fulltilt:[quoted image]
So great. I think I finally captured the 3D image.
I didn't look at the album jacket at first. I thought you were talking about imaging and soundstage. I've been reading too many audiophile forum posts
Quoted from Reality_Studio:Got bit by the vinyl bug completely by accident. My business partner has a client who got her a record player, one of those Crossley suitcase all in one players that she put at our film house that we both use. Last time I played a record was 1985 when I sold all mine and switched to CD's and I was one of those that struggled to understand why people would go back. So I saw it, pulled out the one record she had (Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here) sat down and looked at it as we used to and thought this is cool. Then put it on the player, fired it up, heard a little dust static, watched the turntable go round and round...and I was hooked. Visited three local records stores near me on Saturday and the pic is half the records I bought, along with a better Audio Technica LP60X player and Edifier speakers with a sub.
I know this is kinda silly but there's just something soothing about seeing the record spin away in the corner and listening to that unique sound. We always play a record now while we do our thing, she loves it as much as I do. Fortunately this seems to be a fairly cheap hobby compared to others but not totally sure where this rabbit hole will lead to (I am looking at the Fluance RT85).
Side note, holy cow the vinyl forums are opinionated! Gonna stay away from those.
[quoted image]
I feel like a lot of hobby enthusiast forums have a propensity for strong takes on everything. I mean, just dig around on the one we are on now!(this thread is pretty laid back and one of the reasons I like it so much). Buy and listen to what you enjoy. I've never heard a Fluance table but I have seen a lot of people talking about them.
I hadn’t thought about this album much in years. I was in a local hifi store recently sitting in on a listening session. They were a/b testing Rega and Moonriver amps over some some Graham speakers. Both of them sounded pretty great. Anyway, one of the guys pulled up “One”. Between it being remastered and the system we were listening on, it was pretty cool. I picked up a copy and am now enjoying it on my rig. “And vinyl for all” is inscribed in the dead wax.
IMG_3826 (resized).jpegSo, I was drawn in on this by the track listing and it being an official live release. The mix is suprisingly subpar. The guitars are ok-ish. The vocals are a little low but passable. The drums on the first three tracks are barely there. They don't get much better after that.
Quoted from lasermel:I went to CAF as well. What a great show. SO much vinyl to look thru and amazing equipment as well! Hope you had a good time. I brought home a "toy" I never thought I would. Can't wait to set up the new TT!
Oooh. Do tell! I heard some nice systems. The Nordost room had a Dagostino integrated amp running through Dynaudio Confidence 20s. That shit sounded amazing.
Quoted from lasermel:For sure, there were SO many great sounding rooms. I think my favorite sound was in the VPI Jefferson room where Acora had their VRC speakers set up. They are granite enclosures weighing about 450lbs each and just so clear and powerful (with a $200k price tag to boot). So many rooms, you get the equivalent of "nose blind" to sound, but that room stood out as memorable.
[quoted image][quoted image]
That VPI is tasty.
Quoted from Dee-Bow:These work great!
[quoted image]
The used Rega I bought came with one of these. They clamp onto the spindle as opposed to just being dead weight on top of the record. I generally use it. I would imagine they are more useful for the lightweight, belt driven turntables vs heavy, direct driven ones.
Quoted from fnosm:I always heard the opposite. That you want something with a ton of torque to spin that weight around.
Technically what I have is a spindle clamp to hold the record down, not a weight.
Quoted from Gov:The Beth’s - Live in Auckland, NZ 2020
[quoted image]
This is a great live album!
Quoted from Gov:RIP Rick Froberg
[quoted image][quoted image]
I need to check this one out. DLJ was one of my favorite bands. I got to see them once when did some of those reunion shows. That's cool that Sparta is on it. My friend Keeley played in that band for a while. He must not have been in it when that did that, per the credits on the back.
I’m cheating on my Rega tonight. Having a little a/b fun. SACD through internal Oppo BDP-95 DAC vs tidal through my Burson DAC. There is more top end crispness on the SACD. The Burson is more forward in the midrange. I have one of those HDMI to I2S boxes coming so I try running digital out of the Oppo into the Burson.
IMG_3976 (resized).jpegQuoted from lasermel:It'll take a while to figure that out! I'm sure there will be some Genesis, Kansas, ELP, Pink Floyd to start.. Going to be a nasty, rainy day tomorrow, so a great time to look into it.
Today was a super day here in VA, and spent some time in a Barnes and Noble that just opened up. They have a great vinyl section and I managed to do some unexpected damage to the bank account. Here are a couple of the highly contrasting pulls from today's "spree"...
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
Where are you at in VA?
Quoted from beergut666:[quoted image]
I'm checking this out on Qobuz now. I can definitely tell Kishi Bashi was influenced by some of this stuff.
Quoted from fnosm:Got the Xmas hookup of the PT CC Live 4LP set.
What a great way to start the end of the year.
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
Which Rega do you have?
Quoted from ArcadeRaid:If memory serves me correctly I picked this one up in Boston some time in the 90s. It is a recording of a show they did in Italy. Many good songs. [quoted image][quoted image]
"tree cool"
Quoted from jazzmaster:Mine too! I got this for Christmas. Some really cool insight into his collection with a reference list at the end that lists what he wrote and or played on with each of the guitars.
[quoted image]
I probably need to scoop that.
Quoted from lasermel:Checking out the features of this test album. Azimuth adjusted! To be fair, I'm not sure "I" can hear much difference than before it was adjusted as the sine waves weren't "that" different in amplitude, but it was interesting to see the changes happen with small adjustments. In any case, I learned something and whether I can hear the difference it or not, now I know it's right, the stylus will last longer by wearing more evenly over time, and it's better for the record groove too. Fun!
[quoted image][quoted image]
I’d love to try this out. Do you need a dual trace scope to do it. I have an old student scope out in the shed.
Quoted from lasermel:I've gotta say that this forum is great for discovering new music. Everyone posts pics of albums they enjoy, and many I've either never heard of before or didn't know existed. When I see something interesting, I stream a little on Amazon Music to check it out and that has led to many vinyl acquisitions that I really enjoy having in the collection.
A general "thanks" for just doing what you do and posting what you like!
I like this aspect as well as seeing everybody's gear.
Quoted from BlackBelt:Sometimes I enjoy this thread more than the pinball stuff
This and the regional FS thread are my first stops on the forums.
Quoted from hwyhed:Thought I’d put on the boss as I assembled a new rack for my lil collection..curious what else you guys use for your vinyl?
[quoted image][quoted image]
Right now, I use these. They are easy to roll under pins for storage. You can find them on Amazon.

Quoted from 30FathomDave:I grabbed a few Smashing Pumpkins releases today: 2011 pressings of Gish and Siamese Dream, and the 2012 pressing of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
I also got My Bloody Valentine's M B V album (2021 pressing).
Gish is my fav Smashing Pumpkins record. I have whatever the latest pressing of it is. Those fuzz guitar tones are still pretty harsh but I love the tunes.
Quoted from guitarded:It's almost impossible to go by a lot of reviews. The variables in LP Playback are insanely different from setup to setup and to try and scientifically isolate the only variable as the mat is asking a ton of most reviewers.
Best thing I can tell you with this sort of thing is that most setups I have owned over 30+ years of being a vinyl nerd were not revealing enough for this sort of thing to make a major difference. Now. If you are getting static, or having issues with a type of mat, changing it up makes sense.
If not, your best bang for the dollar (for drastic improvement in your playback chain) is always going to be spent in your Source.
After that, I prioritize Cart / Stylus->Preamp->Speakers.
Just my opinion. And I am assuming you are playing cleaned LPs. No matter how you go about cleaning them.
All of this! The more revealing and detailed your system can get through upgrading components, the more you can notice increasingly smaller improvements. Eventually it can become a rabbit hole of diminishing returns. It's probably more fun just to stay in the rabbit hole...as long as you can still access food, water and shelter.
Quoted from BlackBelt:‘Frengers’ by the Danish band Mew. I was working on a different record for a client that reminded me of this one, so I had to put it on… I can’t even begin to describe how massive and lush this record sounds. Cut by the late/great Stan Ricker at half-speed (Stan was the primary champion for half-speed cutting back when it was initially intended to used for CD-4/quadraphonic LP’s).
[quoted image]
This is one of my favorite records of all time. I have seen them twice. Great band. They initially reminded me a little of Pale Saints. And The Glass Handed Kites is also excellent.
Quoted from Fulltilt:Phish is the cat's new favorite.
[quoted image][quoted image]
That looks like a good orange buddy there.
I discovered a new band, Cognizance, by browsing the record store bins. I’m not sure I could tell you the last time that happened. I largely discover new music through the like artists function aka “artist radio” on different streaming services or recommendations on the hifi forums.
IMG_4338 (resized).jpegIMG_4339 (resized).jpegQuoted from zombywoof:As tight a band as you might expect from a bunch of Frank Zappa alums. This one, while a product of its time, still holds up well. Warren Cuccurullo's guitar is tasty, especially so since so many new wave bands were running away from guitar at the time.
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
I didn't realize they repressed this. I have an OG copy. It's amazing, at least retrospectively, how much Rhyme & Reason pales in comparison to this record.
Quoted from Fulltilt:Oh you be Illin’.
[quoted image]
I bought this new when it came out. I sold it and my other hip hop vinyl to a friend for pennies in my teen years... I might have to scoop that one.
Quoted from Reality_Studio:You guys and your pics of awesome looking amps is making me wanna get a vintage amp I used to have a Luxman in the early 80s, the old stuff has such a nice look and glow.
That's my problem with the aesthetics of a lot of the modern gear. There is definitely some pricey modern stuff that look AND sounds great. If you dig around enough you can find, somewhat more affordable, modern gear with vintage aesthetics...Vincent and NAD to name a couple. Of course there is an nearly endless amount of actual vintage equipment out there!
Quoted from Gov:Got lucky and just happened to look at Jimmy Eat World’s merch site the other day and they had a handful of the 2013 pressing of Damage. I thought it may have been a new pressing since it was only pressed that year but it has a download code that expired in 2014 in it
Anyways, I feel lucky to get it. Very underrated album IMO.
[quoted image][quoted image]
Futures is one of my favorite rock records of all time.
Hyped to get this one. However this has served as a lesson to buy records from record dealers or vinyl collectors when dealing with shipping. This was shipped in this box as seen. It suffered creases in the jacket and a break in the spine. Luckily the record was unscathed.
Quoted from Gov:Nostalgia pickup. I watched this movie dozens of times growing up as we had a copy recorded on VHS.
[quoted image]
I loved this movie when I was a kid. I've seen it quite a few times over the years. I'm surprised the soundtrack doesn't include the ubiquitous "oh yeah" by Yello.
Quoted from Gov:Empire State Bastard - rivers of heresy
Metal Side project from:
Simon Neil – Biffy Clyro
Mike Vennart – Oceansize
Dave Lombardo – Slayer
[quoted image][quoted image]
I'll have to check this one. I'm fans of Slayer and Biffy Clyro. However, would never expected to see their path crossing. That said, Lombardo is amazing and a different kind of metal guy.
Quoted from Fulltilt:The po po.
[quoted image]
Fantastic record. I have this T-shirt too.
Quoted from jazzmaster:Been this kinda night…[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]
That's a good kind of shoegaze night there.
Quoted from BlackBelt:Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head. The A side of this LP is perfection…
[quoted image]
I like this one pretty much start to finish. I got to see them live when they were touring on that record. Great stuff.
Quoted from Gov:[quoted image][quoted image]
Good to see some Biffy in here. My wife turned me on to them.
Quoted from Gov:Yup, love the Biff! I also picked up Opposites today as well.
FYI, they are repressing their first few albums soon I believe.
I wouldn't mind picking up opposites and only revolutions on vinyl.
Quoted from Dee-Bow:these are my most recent pick-ups off FB marketplace! . A few hard to find albums (superjoint ritual & billy strings 1st pressings!) and a few on the heavier side of metal! The mighty Belphagor.. and you're not not gonna grab meshuggah albums!
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]
I probably need to scoop a copy of "I" on vinyl. I have most of the other Meshuggah albums that I like on vinyl. That thing looks killer too.
Quoted from Coyote:Maybe I'm an idiot, but... how the hell does this play? Or sound?
All of the songs are probably on side A since it's a single and this is side B. I have a few 2 LP albums that only use three sides and they have something crafty etched or pressed into the unused side.
Quoted from insight75:First new vinyl in a while. Highly recommended for quality sound.
[quoted image]
Wow. I had no idea Mesa made audiophile gear. That's rad you have one of these. I also ran across the Tigris integrated amp too which I've now got at the top of my want list. Both seem pretty rare. I've been playing guitar through a two channel Mesa Dual Rectifier since the mid 90's.
Quoted from insight75:I'm a Mesa guitar guy as well. I intentionally put the Baron in the picture to see if anyone would notice it. I've wanted one for 17 years (my first email to a seller dates back that far). I finally landed one at a decent price. There is a guy still at Mesa that repairs them. I reached out to him because the bottom panel was missing and I simply wanted a picture of it so I can make one. He ended up saying, "we have a few..I will send you one on the house". Sweet! He also asked me to send pics of the guts because he wanted to make sure there were no leaky caps. Mesa customer service great!
That's rad.
