Some of today's playlist.

Nice I picked up that GotG album the other day. I like it.

I am listening to this today. Love this album.

Awesome setup. Would love to score some vintage stuff like that and fix it up.

#7662 2 years ago

This might be the best sounding album in my collection. Outstanding pressing and the jacket and sleeve are very nice too. Such a great album. I need to pick up Automatic Midnight as well from them.

Snagged some good stuff at a flea market today. This one was the best of the bunch. Love old Genesis and the early live albums are great. Nearly perfect condition too.

Nice! What model is that?

Quoted from Tortelvis:

Picked this up used as a birthday present to myself. Waiting for new phonostage to arrive so I can try it out. [quoted image]

Picked these up the other day. Always love My Shirona. However, The Shape of Punk to Come is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Church of the Cosmic Skull, Everybody is going to Die.
The Skulls third magnificent album, new album is out soon.
Check out the song Sorcery and Sabotage, great Video on YouTube.
For fans of ELO, Floyd, Beatles and Melodic Weirdness.
If you dig the Skull you can only buy from their website.

Got this TT back up and running for a friend. Giving it a good workout tonight to make sure it is all good to go.

Picked up this linear Technics a few weeks back. Got it cleaned up and working good. Really love the look of these things.

Also found this Ratt album at my father in laws house mixed among a lot Herb Albert and gospel albums

Also If anybody has a Technics SL-10 or SL-V5 for sale, hit me up.

#7770 2 years ago

This will be my first RSD coming up. Don't really know what to expect at our local shop. Does stuff usually sell out quick?

#7772 2 years ago
Quoted from Pablito350:

At our local shop they'll wait outside well before the store opens to get a good shot at getting what they want.
Unfortunately a lot of them seem to be flippers.
If you see something on the RSD list that you want I suggest you call your local shop to ask how many they got, and maybe they'll tell you. Then plan accordingly.
-Paul

Yeah that is what I was afraid of. Records are as bad as Mondo poster drops when it comes to trying to snag something it seems. There isn't anything I am desperate for so not a huge loss if I don't get anything. Our store is running a buy 2 get 1 free sale all weekend tho on non RSD stuff, so hope to find a few things at least.

#7788 1 year ago

I opted out after seeing our local store charging $60 for records that are $25-30 elsewhere.

#7790 1 year ago

If anybody happens to get an extra copy of Kauai, hit me up.

#7798 1 year ago

Ended up grabbing the two albums I wanted from RSD on Discogs and ended up being cheaper than getting it locally anyways with the prices my local shop charges. So pretty pleased.

#7800 1 year ago

They sold out of what I wanted in the first 5 minutes so they weren't getting my money from these releases anyways. I wasn't camping out. I spend plenty of money there during the year.

#7806 1 year ago

I have had mixed results. Elemers can be hard to get off in one big piece. I have had a lot better luck with Tightbond 2.

If you have a large ultrasonic cleaner I recommend one of the little motor spindle things. Really works well imo.

#7814 1 year ago
Quoted from meSz:

Not sold on the Walmart records. Had a few now where the record wasn’t flat but more like a bowl. The center touches the table but the otter edge is 1/4” off the table. Also had issue with sound quality. Anyone else experience this?

I have 3-4 albums from Wal-Mart and they all have been flat so far.

#7817 1 year ago
Quoted from cooked71:

Anyone here subscribe to Vinyl Me Please? My wife and son gave me a subscription a few years ago and I’ve kept it ever since. Nothing beats picking up records in real stores/markets, but VMP is a whole different experience. Their pressings are AAA, including really heavy vinyl, the covers thick card, and all the extras with each pressing are fantastic. The whole presentation is next level.
Best of all is it can expose you to music you might not listen to otherwise. Nothing better than coming home once a month/every couple of months to a a mystery VMP package.
And to take it to the next level, they’ve just announced they’re building a big audiophile pressing plant in Denver this year.
https://www.billboard.com/business/business-news/vinyl-me-please-denver-pressing-plant-1235062914/amp/

I have considered it. Kinda pricey for stuff I am not sure I am going to like. Seems like most people are happy with them though.

#7820 1 year ago
Quoted from rolandthoms:

I did “vinyl me, please” and “vinyl moon” simultaneously for about a year or so. In the end, vinyl moon is still going strong with me after 3 years. They’re both great for different reasons. But always fun when you receive on your doorstep

Vinyl Moon sounds pretty cool. I like the mixtape idea and from what I have listened to on the website, the music they pick sounds like my style. Might have to give it a shot. I love the 'art' aspect of it too.

#7826 1 year ago

I went ahead and signed up for both VMP and VMoon. Will see which one I like better. I am excited to get the Tribe Called Quest album from VMP tho.

#7828 1 year ago

I would like to find the VMP pressings of the following if anybody happens to want to sell them.

St. Vincent - Masseduction
St. Vincent - St. Vincent
MF Doom - Born Like This
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga
QotSA - Songs for the Deaf.

#7830 1 year ago
Quoted from littlecammi:

I have this LP, but there are no grooves on either side of the record.

That seems problematic...

#7833 1 year ago

I have a question for the experts here. Are most of the 1/2" bayonet headshells interchangeable? For example, these two.

Screenshot 2022-04-29 195639 (resized).pngScreenshot 2022-04-29 195639 (resized).pngs-l1600 (resized).jpgs-l1600 (resized).jpg
#7835 1 year ago
Quoted from Pablito350:

Yup, although some carts might not fit into the headshell, or may need to be shimmed.
Also the 2 pics you posted are for 'S' shaped tonearms whereas the straight tonearms take an angled headshell.

yes, I should have mentioned for an 'S' shaped tonearm. Thank you!

#7840 1 year ago

I would buy that for the album art alone.

#7843 1 year ago

I agree on the 90's bands not having vinyl releases. Nice score on the Cake albums. Comfort Eagle is my favorite album from them.

#7846 1 year ago

Couple of recent pickups for tonight. Even for a picture disc High n Dry sounds great.

Quoted from Pablito350:

We've also picked up two vintage Pioneer turntables (a PL-516, and a PL-518) for about $100 - $150 from Goodwill that with a little tweaking here and there ended up being just as good, if not better than the Fluance.

I have been scouring our donation shops but never find anything. We have a local facebook flipper for audio gear and I am pretty sure he hits all of them first thing every morning and gets anything decent that comes in.

#7860 1 year ago

Excited to give these a listen tonight. VMP pressings. Thanks to guitarded for the hookup!!

#7866 1 year ago
Quoted from Pablito350:

Use the Goodwill site. They seem to pull the good stuff from stores, and auction them off online.
Hope this ridiculously long link works.
https://shopgoodwill.com/categories/listing?st=turntable&sg=&c=&s=&lp=0&hp=999999&sbn=&spo=false&snpo=false&socs=false&sd=false&sca=false&caed=5%2F2%2F2022&cadb=7&scs=false&sis=false&col=1&p=1&ps=40&desc=false&ss=0&UseBuyerPrefs=true&sus=false&cln=1&catIds=&pn=&wc=false&mci=false&hmt=false&layout=grid
You can score some screaming deals on things, but the highly desirable stuff goes for top dollar.
We also get bulk records here as well. Like 25 records for $10 if we see a bundle that has some worthy titles. We then use the remaining records as trade bait at the local shops.

I will check it out again. I have never had much luck there but haven't looked for turntables.

#7887 1 year ago

I would like to have that one. That whole album is solid.

Love Ryan Adams.
I'm also a big Joe Jackson fan and his take on Pulp's "Common People" with Ben Folds and William Shatner is one of my all time favorite songs.
Have the CD, but ordering the vinyl tonight. Thanks for the reminder.

RE: Shatner - Yeah, it is genuinely one of my favorite albums. Pressing is good too.

That said, this Ryan Adams and the Cardinals EP pressing sounds incredible. Great EP as well, has a couple of adaptations of his early songs and also a cover of 'Down in a hole' from Alice in Chains.

Anybody interested in a lightly used Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge with Nagaoka headshell? I like it but it is very similar to another cart I have and want to try some different ones. I can provide pics if anybody is interested.

Have the original hard shell case. $130 shipped to the US USPS first class. Will consider trades for other carts or albums.

Welp my TEAC integrated amp died last night. Sound went out and smelled a whiff is smoke. Opened it up and sure enough couple spots fried the resistors. For those of you that don’t have a local repairman, is there anybody online that you recommend for repairs? I know the amp isn’t worth a lot but it sounds amazing to me and would like to get it going again.

I know I could replace the components myself but I am not set up to diagnose the cause.

Really excited to finally find this one. Fairly obscure band and was lucky to find this copy on eBay for a great price. The disc is misprinted with the same side 2 label on both sides, but at least it is pressed correctly. This album has one of my favorite covers ever in David Bowie's Moonage Daydream. I always wanted to cover this song in my band back in the day but could never get my bandmates to go for it. This cover is pretty much how I envisioned our version would be. I am glad somebody got around to it

Jimmy Eat World - Integrity Blues

Tom Petty - The Last DJ

Lana Del Rey - Born to Die

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

Biffy Clyro - A Celebration if Endings.

Ended up about $15 each, so not bad.

Anybody else valued what their collection might be worth? Number of records in your collection? Would be curios to know…

If you accurately catalog your collection on Discogs, it gives you a pretty decent idea of value.

#8237 1 year ago
Quoted from Pickle:

That’s a good idea….would take me a while. It’s pretty subjective on condition so you gotta be honest with what you really have.
The tedious part may be verifying what pressing a record is. I am no expert at that but it can make a difference on the value of some records.

Yeah I am glad I started off putting my collection into Discogs when I began collecting. Makes it a lot easier.

Got a new one in the mail today. Great punk stuff. The Chats.
It’s clear vinyl (the first I’ve ever seen). It was supposed to be a color fusion. But looks like they forgot the color add in the press.
Also, hidden track on the album. Nice touch!

Do you guys outer sleeve your records? YouTubers convinced me everything needs a poly inner and outer sleeve, but I feel like a grandma with plastic over her couches every time I switch an album.

Yes, mainly b/c I like storing the record outside of the jacket in the back of the plastic sleeve. Makes them very easy to get in and out and the poly sleeves have less static buildup.

#8904 1 year ago
Quoted from Daditude:

That's what I'm hoping for. I'm looking for suggestions.

Well then, these are the albums I enjoy and listen to the most.

Supertramp - Breakfast in America
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound or A Trick of the Tail
Daft Punk - Tron Legacy Soundtrack
David Bowie - Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
The Beatles - Revolver
Beastie Boys - Pauls Boutique

Modern stuff:
Hayley Williams - Petals for Armor
Radiohead - The Bends
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Polygondwanaland

I have a feeling the 2018 Remix of Animals is going to make that list soon. I have been listening to it a lot since I got it. Sounds amazing to me.

Did you get a denim sleeve or just a cardboard one? I wasnt sure if they sold them with the denim sleeves except at shows.

I got the cardboard one stupidly, but they were selling the denim ones on Gizzverse the first day they were up for orders but they went quick. I didn't want to take the chance on it being another Made in Timeland (which I like, but not $50 like). Turns out Laminated Denim slaps. Can't wait for it to show up.

Laminated Denim is an anagram for Made in Timeland did you know?
Im waiting for timeland to go under $15 on amazon personally. It was almost there recently.

I did know, hence my hesitation. I got Made in Timeland for $20 and I am happy with that, but would have been upset if I had paid more for it. Not something I will listen to a lot. I actually enjoy it more at 33 rpm than 45 :p

I am glad LD is really good and I will be listening to it a lot.

Quoted from Dee-Bow:

Do you have a favorite KG album i should look out for? Headed to the record store tomorrow and probably grabbing Omnium.. they have so many lp's already..i cant get 'em all

Omnium Gatherum is a great starting spot IMO as there are so many styles explored. Then you can decide which songs are your favorites, and there are entire other albums in the same style. It is a great album too. In my top 3 for them.

That said my go to recommends for King Gizzard are:

Polygondwanaland
Nanogon Infinity
KG

In your Mind Fuzz is great too, but is very lo fi sounding, even more so than Nanogon. Songs are great tho.

Quoted from Daditude:

I have been inspired by Dee Bow this morning:
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Live in Melbourne '21
[quoted image]
3 discs of LP goodness
[quoted image]

I think their live albums are better in a lot of cases for listening to their earlier work b/c the recording quality is actually better. Any of the live bootlegs are great. I listen to them frequently. '19 London is probably my favorite overall, but you can't go wrong with any of them except maybe the Levitation recordings. They are good performances, but the sound quality isn't great.

#9139 1 year ago
Quoted from Daditude:

Nonagon Infinity is widely considered their best studio album.
Polygondwanaland is another great one that you may look into.
If those aren't available (or if you are wanting a greater range of songs), I would suggest one of their live albums. San Francisco 2016 and Bonnaroo 2022 are both pretty popular.

I don't think Bonnaroo '22 is out on vinyl yet. Early '23 is the earliest I have seen for a release date. Don't want him hunting for something that isn't out there yet. San Fran '16 is pretty easy to find.

What would be your next KG album recommendation..i picked up Omnium and dig it for sure. They have so many albums not sure what else to get. I'm not into the really pop silly stuff.. more into to the space riff trippy stuff.

Like posted above, Infest The Rats Nest is straight up thrash metal. I personally think the essential KGATLW album is Polygondwandaland. I love almost every album but that one is their most comprehensively thought-out album.

If you liked Omnium, I would also check out Gumboot Soup as it has kind of the same vibe with a lot of variety style wise.

Other IMO essentials are: Nanogon Infinity, Murder of the Universe and I’m on your mind fuzz. Also check out the microtonal trilogy.

Quoted from lftwng4:

All you that like King Gizzard et al, how do you feel about Tropical Fuck Storm? I know they're mates and all, but neither band has clicked for me. I've got a friend who loves TFS and gave me a couple of their records, I've run through Braindrops about 10 times and Meh. I know King Gizzard is very prolific, and I own nothing, so obviously I haven't heard all that much from them, but what I have didn't move me either. Anyone care to compare and contrast the 2 bands?

TFS is much more raw IMO, sound wise. They have a few songs I like, but on the whole I am not a fan. KGATLW just resonates with me, and I appreciate their ability to just do whatever they want, and it usually ends up being something I enjoy. TFS is kind of like the Murlocs for me (Ambrose and Cookie from KGATLW's other band), I like a few songs but for the most part would just rather listen to KGATLW. I know a ton of people love them though.

Welp, incredibly disappointing pressing of the new Paramore release. Noisiest record I have ever heard from a surface noise front. Hoping to get a replacement. However, most of the reviews at Discogs are saying the same thing. So you might want to check there before picking it up if you are interested. Seems like the black press might be the best.

The music itself is great.

Is that an official release? I don't see anything on the Century Media Store.

Yeah. Comes out Friday. BBC live recordings. Rhino records is putting it out. ‘72-‘87. Most of it is Lyceum and Wembly, but there are some other good ones from the early days. There is a 5 disc CD version that has a lot more on it.

I just listened to that Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited on YT. Outstanding concert. Going to have to get the vinyl for it as well.

This one showed up today. Soundsreally good other than some pops and clicks. Hopefully a good cleaning will sort that. Mastering sounds good so far at least on disc 1.

Is there any noticeable upgrade over the boots for the 80 and 87 shows?
I was going to purchase, but there are some unforgivable omissions from the Webley concert (Abacab and TTT), so not going to bother.

I don't have those to compare to, so I don't know. I think Abacab is on the CD release, but not the vinyl.

Sound quality is better than Seconds Out and Three Sides Live fwiw.

Quoted from BlackBelt:

Any specific Metric album you’d suggest for a first timer?

Probably Fantasies as it is probably the most approachable and had the most 'hits' on it. It and any of the ones on the bottom row are excellent IMO. The first three albums are good, but very different stylistically from the rest. Synthetica and Fantasies are probably my favorites of the bunch, but I like them all.

#10474 1 year ago
Quoted from vid1900:

Live It Out is their best album.
Unconventional rhythms and song structure set Metric far above the standard pop fare when that came out

I will admit, it is my least listened to Metric album. Hoping to change that now that I have it physically. Maybe my opinion will change of it.

My SL-10 began having some intermittent speed issues and some power gremlins. Decided to recap it today. So far so good, remains to be seen if it will resolve the issues long term. While I was in there, I did find some suspect work that somebody had done in the past, in regard to wiring and cable management choices....resolved all of that and did some basic maintenance while I was at it. Hopefully it will be good for another 40 years :p

It uses p-mount carts, so they are all made to spec and use the same tracking force, so that should be set already. You can fine tune it if needed or are paranoid. No, you don't have to change anything for the angled mounts

You can find them if you are patient for under $500 in good condition. Even less if you don't mind not having the 310MC cartridge. I will be honest, I put a P23 cart in it and it sounds 95% as good as the 310MC, so I have put it away for safe keeping since they are relatively hard to find in good condition that don't need to be retipped.

The SL-7 also will play on the stands and some think is even cooler looking. You just have to watch out for the plastic latches on it as they can often be broken.

I need that 2nd FF album. Didn't love their 3rd but the first 2 are wonderful through and through.

I agree, their first 2 albums are bangers.

Some classic sad dad music tonight, including a great cover of Fade Into You by Mazzy Star.

Haven't heard that one. Any good? Love me some Bowie.

One of my new favorite bands. These goodies just came in the mail.

I love the Beths. I need to get the new album, but have heard some of the pressings are kinda bad. How does yours sound and what pressing is it if you don't mind me asking?

So I have found I enjoy buying broken turntables and getting them going. Picked up this linear Mitsubishi LT-20 for cheap non working. All of the tracking lamps inside were shot and I spent they day replacing them. Quite a job but it is up and running. Really cool table. Sounds great with at AT carts I have but the Nagaoka I have is wicked distorted on it. So have to figure that part out. Worth sweating my butt off in the garage today

Picture discs are a waste of pressing plant time.

#11298 9 months ago
Quoted from Dragon:

I'm not savoy about picture disc's issues
what negatives do they create?

90% of the time they sound terrible. The 10% of the time they don't, they still don't sound anywhere near as good as regular vinyl.

Quoted from BudManPinFan:

I feel the same way about splatter vinyl, I don’t get the allure of it. Just give me a good quality black vinyl pressing.

I haven't had the same experience with splatter or other colors nearly as much. I have a few splatter patterns that sound incredible. I think that more comes down to who presses them.

Every release I have from Parlophone is top notch. They all sound fantastic and the extras are great.

I forgot how good this record is. I can’t believe this is 12 years old.

Amazing album and band. Walmart was blowing these out for $5 last year and I picked up a second copy to give to @jdoz2, though I am sure he never listened to it :p

Been listening this a lot since Clytor posted it. Best new album I have heard this year.

Sir Chloe - I Am the Dog

Also in a funny coincidence, we are adopting a dog tomorrow, who happens to be named Chloe.

Really digging Cherry Glazerr lately. Their new album comes out soon and from what they have released so far it should be stellar.

I tend to take a chance on independent artists on Bandcamp that press their stuff on vinyl. I remember being in a band struggling to get our music out there 20 years ago, it's tough

More often than not I pleasantly surprised at the quality of the pressing/mastering. Really like this album from Ultra-Lite. Honestly one of the best sounding pressings I own. Jeff Rosenstock vibes from this group. All in all, I really love Bandcamp as you not only can buy directly from the artists in most cases, but you get digital copies of everything you buy there as well. I have found many great independent bands on there. If wish something like it was around 20-25 years ago.

Went to a record show this morning. Here are a few of the titles I picked up. Apparently sat one of the titles I bought down and didn't get it in my bag and didn't make it home with me. Luckily it one of the cheap ones. Still sucks tho.

Got a cool one today. I have always been really disappointed with the thin sound of my original SRC US press of Genesis Duke. Nearly zero bass and very low output compared to all of my other Genesis albums.

I found this mint copy of the original 1980 Nippon Japan press of Duke for a very good price and wow the difference is night and day. Extremely full sounding and much louder than the US copy.

This one finally came in. KGATLW Red Rocks '22. 15 LP boxset of the 3 marathon shows. Fuzz Club killed it on this release. Weighs almost 20lbs total. Very nice hard cover photo book as well in the package. 9+ hours, no repeats.

I am usually not a fan of the artwork Fuzz Club uses for their bootlegs but this one I like a lot, even if it was lifted from a Uriah Heep cover....
