The Gremlins Score just arrived in the mail yesterday. This thing is awesome! Hidden cover art shows up when you expose the cover to sunlight and hidden sleeve art shows up if you get the sleeve wet.

Who else remembers all those "special" discs? Direct-to-Disc, Half-Speed, Super Discs?

Oh yeah, the half-speed mastered discs are great.

#254 2 years ago

I always thought I'd found gold when I ran across an "import" album.

Tell me more about half speed lps. Never heard of it.

#256 2 years ago

I'm certainly no one to have detailed knowledge of cutting vinyl, but my simple understanding is that cutting at half-speed allows time to render more detail and theoretically more dynamic range into the groove.

#257 2 years ago

Fairly sure that mass market vinyl LPs were made by pressing hot vinyl between metal plates. Those plates were etched/engraved, and were masters. Possibly the master was 1/2 speed cut, allowing for the more dynamic range.

There are 33 1/3, 78 LP machines that do cut vinyl blanks into playable records. For low production LPs.

#258 2 years ago

I collect mostly Industrial, Metal and Rock records.
Almost all PIG albums (most of Raymond Watts work), KMFDM, Iron Maiden, etc...
We actually have a good record store with pinball too at Young Loud and Snotty.

Sorry for my careless description. Yes, pressing vinyl and cutting half speed into the master lacquer.

Played the hell out of these albums....
God's speed Greg Lake, we will miss you!!

The first 8-track I ever got was Pictures at an Exhibition. Greg Lake will be missed.

Been collecting records for years .. and years and years. . Some new, releases but mostly original pressings . From herb Albert to hendrix to black flag to Celtics frost.. Lou Reed.. I'm all over the place.. thousands .. when you buy records at least you own something..
Not some sound floating in computerland..
I just purchased a killer late 70s technics direct drive table.. such great rich sound . My last was a lame crosly.. wich I don't recommend if you want good sound.. shitty tone arm..week belt..
Anyway yes vinyl rules ...

A couple weeks ago I made a new shelf to my hold my cd's and vinyl collection. I don't have a lot of records but I have a lot of great ones. This shelf should last me for years.

Just got this in the mail. Original Brazilian pressing from 1992. I still can't believe this wasn't released on vinyl in the states until 2009.

Wow love this thread! I was an avid audiophile back in the 80's and 90's. Still have my collection but don't take the time to listen to them as I should. This has reinvigorated my interest! I have lots of Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs half speed masters and some picture discs.
I think I'd like to frame the picture discs. I saw the framemyrecord.com site and those look good. Any other recommendations for framing vinyl? Needs to be acid free matting, uv protected glass, etc.
Thanks listeners!

Quoted from Milltown:

.. when you buy records at least you own something..

And even when they decide to change it years later, you still have the original. Can't beat album art.

#268 2 years ago

Happiness is going to a flea market and finding dozens of records you want all for only 2 bucks a piece. Now to find the time to listen to them all.

Great to see the good old Discwasher close by. I still have and use the one I had back in the 70's.

D2, 3 or 4 fluid?

#271 2 years ago

My last little bottle was D3. Pretty darn worn.. filled with D4 refill. (that's about gone too..)

IMG_2483 (resized).JPG

#272 2 years ago

I love the way the block of wood handle is milled out to hold the small bottle of Discwasher fluid. I recall my small bottle is D2 and my refill is D3. Packed away somewhere.....

Does anybody else remember the Sound Guard record preservation system?
I have a lot of my albums dated on the jacket after using it. So far they still sound great!

I love buying box lots of vinyl cheap. Keep looking there are lots of player quality lots out there. What I don't like others can pick for free. There is a huge resurgence of people getting back into playing vinyl records.

Picked up today.

Couple .38 Special, couple Kinks, couple Hall & Oates, and a 99 cent Willie Nelson for good measure. All on my super messy basement floor (mid shop job gets a little crazy down here).

Seemed a fitting place to post. In memory of Butch Trucks. Thank you for all my years of enjoying your albums.

A couple of pictures from one of the Allman Brothers concerts that I had the privilege to attend.

I saw The Allman Brothers a few times and they always put on a good show. I enjoyed the dual drumming of Butch and Jaimoe.

Anyone else ever use or even remember the Dennesen Geometric Soundtractor?
For all of us anal retentive vinyl junkies.
I think it carried over into pinball collecting in later years.....

I've had enough to drink that I'm letting my wife play her records. She found this one shortly after talking about this movie at league one night with badbilly27

Gotta love that LP art!!
And the pin art
Always loved the art and color on that pin.

Both nice. But was referring to Stern Drac.

Admittedly, digital is convenient...as long as you dont mind quality trade offs, nothing physical to own, no real art, etc..

This, now THIS is convenience!!

#298 2 years ago

Yes both have great art actually bought the lp because of the art, haven't seen the movie but ended up loving the music. Real cool 70s vibe to it. Now. I need to see the movie

Lemme guess...that cost you Two Dollars....

Here's a question...what are you willing to pay for an album....like a new release that was unavailable before?

Some of the new ones seem like a quick money grab...others have been worth it
