Appetite cover done by Robert Williams. Definately my favorite artists. Proudly low brow art, and I think he started juxtaposition art magazine.

I have the same record mint.

I remember that Robert Williams artwork was featured in Heavy Metal magazine in March 1983, (I think I still have it somewhere), and the title was indeed "Appetite for Destruction". Now we know where GnR got the idea for the title of their first album

Gen Xer here.....Started getting back into vinyl about 18 months ago. It's a great hobby for many reasons...

1. Nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia. Love getting to relive my 80's youth. Also, bought a box set of Big Band Era music from the thrift store for $1. Every time I play it, I am transported back to my grandfather's kitchen table listening to "the music of your life" while he cooked breakfast for his grandkids.

2. The artwork and misc. historical tidbits. I love finding an album that has a little bit of history with it. The older albums many times have someone's address or info from when they purchased it originally. It's like connecting with the original owner in some small way. Gives many of the albums a back story.

3. Lps require you to be an active listener. Like most, the iPod era had turned me into an ADHD constant shuffler. Now music is more than just background noise for me.

4. How would you know what Mike Damone is talking about in Fast times at Ridgemont High if you only had a cd player.

5. Listening to how the artist wanted the album. One of my favorite albums is Moondance by Van Morrison. Into the mystic is a transcendental experience for me every time I hear it. On the lp, it is the last song of side 1. After the song finishes, you have complete silence to finish absorbing what you just heard and let the mojo flow through you.

On the cd, the song ends and you are jarred away from your mellow zone with the upbeat, "Come Running." Totally kills it for me. The album changed all of that for me.

6. You have a chance to purchase albums that just aren't readily available in other formats. Live Ike Turner, 12" mixes from yesteryear, etc.

7. Supports the local small business person.

8. Opens your eyes to albums, songs and artists that you never thought you might like. Never thought I'd be the guy to own 3 Pointer Sister albums from the 70's and 4 John Denver albums. Some of the best songs from bands are hidden away on side 2.

B sides are great...discovering a bands "other" music is the best. Not just the radio songs.

#208 2 years ago

another small haul today. About to lock myself in the basement to give these a listen

Yes, here in Uruguay it had a great success.
This hit, "Rapper's Delight," was the first rap single to become a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979

Do you guys use anything fancy to clean the stylus?

I just discovered the magic eraser method tonight and it seemed to work pretty good.

Wow, overseas pressing. I've never seen that one. I did find one of the early presses with the red label and the orange sleeve. About 20 years ago I came across a bunch of new old stock Sugar Hill 12"s. No Rappers Delight or the Message but there were Treacherous Three, Crash Crew and West Street Mob 12's in there. I got doubles of as many as I could. I still think my favorite is the Funky 4+1 "That's the Joint"

I guess only a big sugar hill fan would get it. Its lyrics from the song. He goes to his friends house for dinner and the food sucks and how he describes dinner.

I love that Newbury Comics sells new vinyl buy good lord is it expensive! Just dropped like $50 on two records. Keep me away from there!

Haha, sorry , I had not understood you
because my english is not good.
Really I'm not a fan, I just love that song and my mother found it with another large amount of vinyl from 70s and 80s.
Then I told her to send me a photo and only want to share with you. Best

There are a lot of records that sit at the 29.99 mark.

Peter Gabriel's US is coming out on vinyl, but at that price, my CD will have to do.

#225 2 years ago

Picked these two up last week.
Graham Parker has been on the turntable ever since!

The whole vinyl reissue thing going on now is a blessing and a curse. It really only makes sense to buy a new reissue if the record you're looking for is rare and expensive. For example, the Twin Peaks soundtrack just came out on reissue. Originals had gotten well over $50 so the reissue becomes a "deal". In most cases its better to hop on discogs and buy the original for less, or get lucky and find what you're looking for at a used record spot.

The other nice thing about some of these reissues is I'm seeing film "scores" (not soundtracks with the popular songs featured in a movie, but scores with the cinematic music). In lots of cases the scores were never released back in the day and lots of stuff is just now being released for the first time. I guess technically they're not reissues, but they are just older music seeing the light of day way after it was made.

I just kind of wish they'd calm down on the colored vinyl. While I've found exceptions to the rule, the colored vinyl usually sounds worse and wears out faster.

Dude, you need to start going to record collector shows. (There will be one in Dedham on October 9.) There are websites that list shows all over the USA and Canada, and (I think) other continents. Lower overhead for sellers means better prices for you.

Picked up this beauty to give vinyl a try at the office. Sounds horrible but for background music it might be acceptable.

Check the cartridge and stylus- it should sound as good or better than an FM radio.
