Quoted from gonzo73:

Yep, don't discount vintage recievers, from 1974-1980, all the Electronics companys were in an arms race of Stereo R&D.
In 80-81 the stereo market crashed, and all the manufacturers started using cheaper and cheaper components.
And the age of black plastic crap stereos was born.
Alas....
I run all vintage gear. You might have to get a vintage stereo serviced or recapped, but the Build Quality and aesthetics are well worth the extra expense.
Sansui, Pioneer, Kenwood, Realistic, Scott, Marantz, and Technics.... you can't go wrong with Receivers from 74-80.
Any reciever from that era with 40-80 Watts is all you need, the 100+ Watt recievers are all Pricey now and highly sought after..... but unnecessary.
This is one of my favorites, a Scott 370-R 60 Watt, with decent speakers it Roars.
[quoted image]

What do you think of a Marantz MR255? It seems substantially cheaper than similar Marantz's but similar quality?

Quoted from Jman44:

Ill look it up....

Ok, Philip's bought out Marantz at this time, the outside looks is Marantz, but the inside Components were cheaper Philip's stuff, the MR255 is looked at as the beginning of the end of Marantz as a top of the line company.
50 watts is nice, some people said it was a decent reciever.
If its under..... say... $150 buy it, if its crap, no big loss.

Search Vintage Stereo Reciever Serviced on ebay.
Lots of great options right now.

#9306 8 days ago

On Ebay now There is a nice Technics SA-500, for $350 that's serviced, I would buy it if I didn't already have the SA-700.

Good price.

#9307 8 days ago

Heres my SA-700 it's my most used Reciever, they look almost identical, the 700 is just more Power.

After the Christmas holiday I am going make a small setup. I have been inspired. Most of my stuff will be audio equipment I already own.

I’ll need to get a turntable.

I'd just like to add for Jman44... Don't let the 50 watt minimum be a floor for your amplifier search. There are plenty of vintage amps in the 20-30 watt range that are really inexpensive that'll sound amazing. A lot of people select vintage receivers based on their looks, and I agree with this. You're the one that has to look at the thing, but don't discount the smaller sized brothers.

As an aside, you can always add wifi and BT connectivity with an add on streamer that'll give you endless possibilities, and it'll also let you use your phone or tablet as a remote. We recently ripped all of our CD's to a FLAC format to a USB drive attached to our router so we can play them all over WIFI through our vintage setup.

I'd set aside a healthy portion of your budget on selecting a good set of speakers above most anything else. I have no idea what your budget is, but I'm a firm believer in the saying "If you want big sound you'll need big speakers".

We picked up a pair of matched Pioneer S710's for $250 that sound great in our room paired with a Pioneer SX-780. Before I found these I was prepared to buy a set of KLH model 5. I'm glad I found the S-710's!

Ha... yeah, I've got four fully set up now.
Thankfully I bought most of them before the Covid run up of prices, just like my pin collection.

I'm not paying todays prices for either.

I bought my first vintage reciever in 2013 for $250 shipping included, for my Sansui QRX-5500

Definitely gotta rethink that mindset. My B&W 705's S1's are the best sounding speakers I've heard in the price range when I bought them, and smoke most things currently out there under 2k. All about design, build quality, and materials - not size. I used to think the same way. Big ol clunky waist high speakers with 18's in them were my first pair. No comparison. Link to the old review:

https://www.stereophile.com/standloudspeakers/204bw/index.html

Current rig is a new-ish (non vintage) marantz SR 6006, rega p1, and my b&w 705's on stands. Would love to upgrade to the 803's someday.

what year are these klipshorns? they still make them ,there still big, a 3-way speaker design 15" - 2" - 1", 105db @ 1w/1m is a very high efficiency speaker and this is what you look for in speakers his smaller amp will shake the walls with this efficiency rating but also sound great at low levels, but thats not all I didn't see the watt handling data or the freq/db chart but i do believe klipsch with this statement "Capable of extreme output levels with ultra low distortion and astonishing dynamic range" pretty cool

#9320 7 days ago

I bought them about 3 years ago. They don't need a lot of power but add some headroom and they will rock your world.
Unboxed and setup "BY MY old man SELF" I might add.

british bowers and wilkins sound great my sister has the floor stand model and she loves them , they sound fantastic one of the better speakers available but 22k for 803's ? how much are the floor standing 705's going for?

#9322 7 days ago

I have found the 900 series Focals work real well with any number of vintage power source. Very fluid and musical with tons of separation / soundstage.

Also, pretty.

Yea the 803 are a dream for me but on the s3 the price went bonkers. My 705s were the last run of uk made. They msrp at the time were 2k, stands another 400. Now anything but the 800 series is assembled with UK made parts in I think Japan. 800s are still uk. 805s list at 5k a pair I believe

I have a couple hundred albums from collections I've absorbed. 60's to 80's. The condition ranges from great with plastic still on, to moisture damaged. I've picked out what I want. How would you guys go about unloading them? I'm not great at finding what release the albums are, I'm a little worried there is something valuable in there. I tried one record store that was loaded with similar albums mostly starting at $10 and they were willing to give me pennies each.

#9332 5 days ago

Just give them to an independent record store, if you can't be bothered to find out what's in the collection, no record store is going to take time to go through your moldy oldies.

Use discogs.... that's what its for.
It should take you 2- 5 minutes to look up each record and what pressing it is.

Remember condition is key.... moldy dirty records are junk no matter how rare.

My one RSD purchase today.

Going to wait to unseal it when my cartridge upgrade is done (have an Ortofon 2M Black on order).

Thank you for the advice everyone on selecting a receiver. I am leaning towards the Technics SA-500 that gonzo73 suggested. How do I determine what speakers will work best with it? Thanks.

#9335 5 days ago

Oooffff... speaker advice....
There are a thousand opinions on speakers...

Your going to need 8 ohm speakers, any modern floor standing speakers will work fine with that SA-500. Its 55 Watts so I'd want full size floor speakers, not bookshelf speakers.

There are decent pairs of speakers on amazon from $300-$600.
I wouldn't spend less than $300... Polk, Jamo, Klipsch, speaker tech is better today, so it's an easy way to make your system better.
Spending a little extra on speakers is a good investment.

Vintage speakers are fun... but it's a crap shoot, you never know what your gonna get, they could still be fresh and hardly used over 30 years, or.... they were owned by a Maniac Rocker like me that blasted them every day...........and worn out.
My Vintage Sansui SP-7500X speakers are amazing sounding.

Cheers.

Listening to a pair of 7700x being pushed by a Pioneer SX-747 right now.
Sounds fantastic and you can make the room uncomfortably loud without sacrificing anything.

I have a full quad set of those Sansui and they will handle just about anything I throw at them.

I'm guessing 3 way speakers would have better sound range than 2 way? Seems most floor standing speakers in the $300-$600 range are 2 way variety. I did see some Fluance 3 way floor standing for $600 , not sure if that brand is recommended or not.

#9339 5 days ago

Never heard any Fluance speakers...sorry.
Look for some reviews' or wait for someone here with real feedback.
I don't know much about modern speakers ' except they can get real pricey quick.

#9340 5 days ago

For fun I just plugged my Sansui SP-7500X back into my 80 watt Realistic reciever... to see if they were as good as I remember..
I wanted to hear a brand new great recorded album on them, so I spun Tool's Fear Innoculum.

And yep. Jeez.....the Sansui's pump out the sound, 43 year old speakers shouldn't sound this good, the bass and soundstage are immense.

I gotta pick up another pair in the X series and run 4 speakers.... probably blow the roof off.

Outstanding,... that recording is from the We Are Motörhead tour in 2000... I first saw Motörhead open for Metallica GnR tour summer 1992 at the Rose Bowl.... one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

But I didn't get into Motörhead till We Are Motörhead in 2000, I attended that tour at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana.
I was a MotörManiac from that day on..

I gotta pick up a copy.

2 crossover points for the 3 way allows the crossover points to go higher and lower so as to be less perceived, and the speaker can have a more natural sound, they are more expensive to .

figure out your room 1st. speaker placement in a room effects your sound and your room acoustics play a big part in how great they sound and it effects what you might want to buy
