Quoted from MMP:Those older cleaning brushes are nice. Mine got lost in the shuffle somewhere and the current designs are not as good.
I picked these up at my local record store and had a blast listening last night. Such a quality Charles Bradley release, both music and package went above and beyond.[quoted image]
Thanks for showing the Charles Bradley album. I’m definitely going to pick that up. This Mr Jukes album is really good and has a great track by Charles on it.

A final follow up to the amp repair.
@vid1900, yep, you were spot on. Apparently it was 2 large 54,000 uF filter capacitors. And he was able to find McIntosh replacements!
I wanted to post a few pics of Terry DeWick's repair shop. A lot of McIntosh history here.
What a great place to hang out and listen to repair stories. He has pictures saved of nearly all the units he's repaired. Fun day.
$400 and it's fixed!
And Toby who keeps everyone in line.

Just a shout out and a huge thank you to my fellow vinyl fans here. Because of you I have been turned on to some things I would not have thought to exist, the Shatner Has Been album (had the digital) and Dawn of the Dead soundtrack have both made my rotation and are well loved.
I truly appreciate the community here!

That’s awesome!!!
Quoted from vid1900:How many of you kids used to have the McIntosh car amps?
I never understood that. McIntosh wouldn't even allow their name to be put on the early receivers.
Just got this today. Ran a record through it and it came out looking really nice. Unfortunately I can’t hear if it makes a difference as my stylus collapsed on my cartridge. Wanted to start with clean records though when I get my new cartridge.

I didn't even know they made a toaster for records.
If that dial is for operating time, just don't set it for warp speed.
Quoted from Fulltilt:I never understood that. McIntosh wouldn't even allow their name to be put on the early receivers.
They were crazy under-rated power wise, and were tested at .005 % THD
Mac would advertise 500w @2 ohm, and they would put out over 800w on the dyno
They are a bitch to service, because mac did not label the components on the circuit boards. It will say Q23 or R103 on the schematic, but no markings where that part is on the board. Stupid.
So, what's everyone's take on how often you should change out your stylus?
I've had the same one for years and haven't noticed any difference in sound quality. I have an audiophile friend that insists that they almost never need to be swapped out. I've also seen posts from people that change them out annually.
Quoted from PismoArcade:So, what's everyone's take on how often you should change out your stylus?
Just like brake pads on a car, it's not any certain length of time, its the physical wear.
Take the stylus up to your local vinyl shop, and look at it through their microscope.
If there are 2 flats on the side, the stylus is worn out.
If you have access to a microscope with good lighting, then set it at 200x and just look yourself.

Agree with Vid on what wear looks like…rule of thumb as I understand is 800-1000 hours. Of course YMMV depending on quality of stylus you start with and condition of records. I buy lots of used records and generally only buy records if they are in excellent condition. Can’t overstate the importance of clean records as not only do they sound better but reduce wear.

Yeah…$5.98 my ass…definitely the last of the raw energy you get from the first 3 titles…I do enjoy AJFA and The Black Album but it was clear they were going more commercial/mainstream. After that I can take it or leave it…the later albums have a few good songs but they are not great albums….the first 3 I can listen to start to finish…Convincing James Hetfield to actually “sing” was the worst thing Bob Rock could have done…I think that forever changed the direction musically speaking Metallica would go….now you have these hard songs with a cheesy pop sounding chorus. Rant over.

I don’t know that record (…And Justice for All was the last of theirs I purchased), but if it were really “garage days,” wouldn’t Clive and Dave be on it?

This was released before AJFA..it was them introducing Jason Newsted as the replacement for Cliff. It’s actually pretty good. After Cliff died they took some time off…had to decide to continue and find a new bass player and they decided this and decided to release it.
Some new stuff for us....
Been looking for this for quite a while.

A few months ago coworker of mine said he had an old pioneer stereo somewhere in his shed buried under some crap. It's a SX-3700, and is considered to be one of the last great receivers from the era. It was in horrible shape from sitting in a shed for 20+ years, but after some TLC, new bulbs, and lots of deoxit it came around.
Here it is next to our much-loved SX-750 ready to get a workout before it goes into our gameroom.
I'm not sure I'm diggin' the light blue LED's I used. Thought they'd compliment the "futuristic" fluroscan displays. Got some new incandescent bulbs just in case.
This vintage shit's fun!

I absolutely love this album. Putting the price in the title was brilliant. They were all relatively easy tunes to play as a teenager, we covered a couple of them in high school bands. It was also a great intro to some bands I never heard of.
Personally AJFA is my last Metallica album I like in its entirety, but I get it. The production is awful, but the raw anger and energy is still there.
Randy Rhodes, just like Robert Johnson, must have sold his soul to the devil.
He was a terrible guitarist with Quiet Riot (worse than any local bar band ), then he comes back 3 months latter with Ozzy and suddenly he was the greatest living guitarist on earth.
He got the same 2 year run of greatness...the standard contract
Before you say that the live with ozzy album had dubs, you can see this actual live video:
I was wondering about those QR 1 and 2 new pressings. I have the originals. Hard to find. Thought they might be bootlegs. Randy Rhoads did get better with time. You can hear it on his progression from QR to Ozzy. I thought his playing was good on those QR albums, and the solos were good too. The songs were just very bubblegum/jr high school. So much better on Blizzard and Diary. I still think Dubrow was the weak link in QR. What a jerk.........
