I just stumbled into this thread. I'm not sure why I haven't popped in before now. I have a hundred or so albums left of what was at one time a much larger collection, but I haven't bought any vinyl since the '80s. Do any of you have a recommendation for a turn table to get back into it with? I'm not looking to spend audiophile level $$$$, just something reasonably decent.

#7852 1 year ago

Here are a few of mine, grabbed more or less at random. I think Sin After Sin may be a reissue. The others were acquired as they were released. I still remember stumbling upon Number of the Beast at the import bin at Mother's Records.

Your best bang for the buck will be finding a repair tech local to you and hitting them up for reconditioned gear. If you have problems finding one, a local public radio station can usually point you in the right direction.

Lotta good local deals fly by on CList, Facebook Marketplace, too.

#7854 1 year ago

Picked this one up too…probably the only Japan pressing I own. Can’t wait to crank this one!

We were in the same boat as you recently, and made some mistakes along the way. IMHO the best bang for your buck in a new turntable is in the Fluance RT81. It'll have a built-in phono preamp that you can disable if you want to, and it comes with a nice Audio-Technica VM95E cartridge.

https://www.fluance.com/turntables

We upgraded our cart to an Ortofon 2M Blue which was about as much money as the whole turntable was. It sure sounds better, but not $250 better.

We've also picked up two vintage Pioneer turntables (a PL-516, and a PL-518) for about $100 - $150 from Goodwill that with a little tweaking here and there ended up being just as good, if not better than the Fluance.

Another great choice is the U-Turn Orbit plus for about $330.

https://uturnaudio.com/pages/turntables

Any of the above will get you spinning on a table that will be accurate, upgrade-able, and look nice for well under $3-$400 bucks.

Hope this helps!

just found this topic! imma huge vinyl lover and own 600+ albums!

for anybody who is looking for a new table to own that is awesome but doesn't take away from your pinball money, I recco the musichall 2.2. i've owned mine for 15-20 years with zero issues and numerous moves over the year. i think its about $500ish, or was, looks like it was discontinued but musichall is a great brand. cheers!

I have been scouring our donation shops but never find anything. We have a local facebook flipper for audio gear and I am pretty sure he hits all of them first thing every morning and gets anything decent that comes in.

Excited to give these a listen tonight. VMP pressings. Thanks to guitarded for the hookup!!

Use the Goodwill site. They seem to pull the good stuff from stores, and auction them off online.

Hope this ridiculously long link works.

https://shopgoodwill.com/categories/listing?st=turntable&sg=&c=&s=&lp=0&hp=999999&sbn=&spo=false&snpo=false&socs=false&sd=false&sca=false&caed=5%2F2%2F2022&cadb=7&scs=false&sis=false&col=1&p=1&ps=40&desc=false&ss=0&UseBuyerPrefs=true&sus=false&cln=1&catIds=&pn=&wc=false&mci=false&hmt=false&layout=grid

You can score some screaming deals on things, but the highly desirable stuff goes for top dollar.

We also get bulk records here as well. Like 25 records for $10 if we see a bundle that has some worthy titles. We then use the remaining records as trade bait at the local shops.

#7865 1 year ago

In the early 80s I started aquiring more and more cassettes. It was just so convenient, Walkmans, car stereos, etc. In 2002 I remember a massive purge. I threw away 400-500 cassettes in one go. The sound quality had degraded so much. They just weren’t durable. A lot of those were one-off live bootlegs.

I will check it out again. I have never had much luck there but haven't looked for turntables.

Music Hall is an excellent choice

the MMF-1.3 has a built in pre-amp (many receivers do not have a phono input) so you can use it universally

I'm not sure why I've never checked this thread out before.

I've collected vinyl my entire life. Recently found these handy record display racks on Amazon for under $40 each. It's nice to have some vinyl that I'm currently playing within reach so I don't have to search through my collection, even if it is alphabetized.

I wore the cd out when it was released in 1990. "Scuse me Trooper...will you be needing any packets today?...."

They're pretty cool and match my speakers and stereo cabinet. https://www.amazon.com/ZonsWorld-Storage-Display-Environmentally-Friendly/dp/B07Q2WZXX8/ref=sr_1_5

Nice to see some local lads getting traction in the US. And well deserved. Seen them live numerous times - my son is a bit of a groupie so I often tag along. He has a pretty impressive collection of Gizz albums.

Brilliant live band if you ever get the chance. Some of the craziest mosh pits i've ever seen.

Funny thing is the only place I've actually met the band was in LA - they were doing a signing at Amoeba. Queues around the block. Great guys. Very down to earth.

One of the only acts that I can think of that released a near perfect album to positive reviews, a huge hit single and great sales and never released another LP.

Gregg Alexander’s two albums before he became New Radicals are under appreciated gems.

Anybody here have White Zombie “Supersexy Swinging Sounds”? And if so, do you want to part with it? I’d trade a project pin or some parts for one. I’d take one and cash for a complete working pin.

Also, Tom Petty “Honeybee”, the Quarrymen (prob takes a complete Sys11 game to get one) or a turquoise lettered Led Zeppelin (I’ve got one, but it’s rough.)

#7895 1 year ago

Yes I got that rob zombie.... one of the few new vinyl records I bought in the late 90s....
Aparently it's super rare and expensive.

I'll trade it for a great shape Solar Fire. get to work finding one.

Hard to believe a Solar Fire in about any condition is worth more than a $700 record!

I see EM pop up all the time for around $700. Seems like I have a warehouse full of $700 project games that I have less than $700 in much like anyone that bought that record new in the 90’s…
