Hey Gonzo, nice collection!
I'm curious though why all the Japanese pressings? Are you living there now, or are they superior in some way?

Quoted from EdisonArcade:

Generally, Japanese pressings receive better quality control and for some eras, better vinyl formulations.

However, their mixes can be / tend towards bright in comparison to some original masterings.

As far as buying used goes, Japanese Collectors are fastidious and buying from them usually nets cleaner than advertised LPs in your mail.

To add to it.....

"Good sound quality. There are many factors that determine how a record will sound, including the quality of the master tapes used, how the record was mastered, and what kind of vinyl was used to press the records. Japanese records are often revered for their high quality sound.

American record companies that pressed records in the millions in the 1970s and early 1980s often used inexpensive or recycled vinyl to press their records, resulting in poor sound or excessive surface noise.

They would also press a high number of records from a single stamper, with each record pressed sounding worse than the one made just before it.

Most Japanese records were pressed using high quality “virgin” vinyl that was manufactured exclusively for pressing records. These records are often extraordinarily quiet and have little or no surface noise, allowing the listener a better listening experience.

In addition, English-language music titles were usually pressed in fairly small quantities in Japan, meaning all of the discs were likely pressed while the stampers were still fairly new.

For many years, Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, an American company known for their high-quality audiophile pressings, contracted the pressing of their records to JVC in Japan, as JVC had invented an exceptionally durable and quiet vinyl compound known as “Super Vinyl” that was unavailable anywhere else."

If you're interested in more about Japanese vinyl go to https://www.rarerecords.net/record-info/japanese-records/ this is where I pulled the above from.

Very well put mesz, and the Japanese took very good care of their vinyl, unlike americans who trashed their records.

So buying a Japanese press from 1975-1989 it's very likely it will be minty.

No I live in SoCal, My friend makes trips to Japan 3 or 4 times a year on buying trips for his record store.
I also buy online from a Tokyo ebay guy with great prices, and fair shipping.
The Obi strips are also just cool.

I hate to say it, but I did. At least as a dumb kid in the 80s. I was guilty of mistreating my vinyl.

You didn’t have to, records pressed in the states were typically done so with contaminated polyvinyl chloride (pvc).

The term virgin vinyl derived from Japanese pressings as Japan used “new” pvc for their pressings. This along with the smaller production rune provided a better quality record.

In the States it was the usual quantity over quality approach.

If you want to step up your listening quality buy some Acoustic Sounds Quality Pressing or Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs pressings.

In 1970 virgin vinyl meant something entirely different.
PVC was for pipes.

Yes and no... love Astro Creep 2000, Hellbilly deluxe, and Hellbilly vol 2, and the last two albums, but he's had a couple clunkers.

I've seen Rob Zombie solo 3 times, and he always puts on a hell of a show.

I'm looking for recommendations on a good beginner setup for someone starting out in the vinyl record scene. I've never owned a record player before, but vinyl has always interested me. I'm not worried about sourcing the records, I travel a lot with work and I can find records easy enough. I'm just clueless as to what I should be getting initially for a decent setup. What type of record player do you guys recommend for someone new as well as speakers? looking for a basic setup that I can get started with.

In terms of a turntable, check out the U-Turn Orbit:

You can do customization and upgrades, but the basic Orbit is a great value.

I run almost exclusively Vintage gear, so I'm not up on current gear.

As far as Vintage, I go with Direct Drive, full Auto Turntables, no cheap ass rubberband driven platters for me!

The 1980s Technics are great, my friend and I buy all that we come across.

This is my main table, Technics SL-Q3 direct drive full auto, not top of its line but pretty close, I love it.

Speaking of Gear, just switched out my Scott 370-R 60 watt Reciever, for my Technics SA-700 100 watt, that I got refurbished last year.

It's a massive beast!

First spin up, Black Sabbath, the new Mix of Technical Ecstasy from the Box set. The new mix is excellent.

Message from the Vintage Freak Kingdom.

Good topic. Found this when I searched for the differences.

From AudioAdvice:

"There are several factors that can adversely affect the sound of your turntable. As your stylus is tracking through the grooves, you only want it to pick up what is in those grooves and nothing else. Well, what if you had a big fat, high torque motor sitting right under the platter? That’s what you have with direct drive, and thus you run the risk of the noise from the motor getting into your platter and being picked up as a background rumble by your stylus.

Belt-drive inherently helps isolate the platter from the motor because the only connection is a rubber belt. Almost all belt-drive turntables worth any salt also suspend the motor so it is not fully connected to your turntable. Some even have it totally separate from the turntable. The odds are, this method is going to have less chance of motor noise getting into your sound."

It seems direct drive's main benefits are mostly for DJs.
Speed control, free spinning (backwards), and no lag in gettin up to speed.

It’s a belt not a band

Quoted from gonzo73:

It's a peeve of mine....rubber bands?

My parents had a super expensive 70s hi fi with a direct drive. It was all well and good till it decided to spin backwards.

You'd have to spin it like a propeller to get it to go in the right direction!

On the plus side, it was super easy to hear "turn me on dead man" and all the other great backwards stuff.

I've always been happy with my belt-driven vintage 70s Yamaha turntable. You replace the "cheap rubber band" about once every 15 years and they cost $5 each.
