Sleeve City Ultimate Outers

Sleeve City lists these as Polypropylene. From your experience, are these the really clear ones that are slightly crinkly? Or are they the more cloudy/whiter ones that don't really have 'crinkle' feel?

I'm guessing those cloudier ones are the polyethylene ones, but not sure.

I have the one on top left next to who sells out

There seem to be a ton of Who LP bootlegs out there I have several different ones.

There are a lot of crappy audience recorded live boots (Decidedly Belated Response, Live at Swansea come to mind) floating around. Ive had lots of them, I copied them onto reel to reel tape (if they werent too bad) and resold the records. Funny, some of the best looking boots Ive had (colored vinyl) were the worst for sound quality. I had a Swansea that was lime green/orange splash and the sound was so bad you couldnt tell what half of it was.
The one you pointed out (Fillmore East 68) has decent sound but is an incomplete show. The one to its right is also a Fillmore 68 boot and is also incomplete, but between the two you get a complete show.
One of the better ones pictured is Tales From the Who. Nice packaging with Stout artwork. A decent recording of a good show.

yeah I used to see Tales From the Who at record shops, really cool package. Wasn't that one a radio recording?

#5715 3 years ago

I think it was. Tho the cover says its QUAD (Quadrapig) its MONO.

#5716 3 years ago

WHO yeah! Nice collection. I've been looking for a nice copy of Tales from the WHO for years.

Only seen two obviously scratched copies, and that's a no go.

Here is a snippet from a discogs thread. I know I have some thick harder outer sleeves like this as well as a number of picture discs in those heavy jackets they come in. Some I think ARE pvc.

I heard from other record guys before too about the pvc outgassing and attacking vinyl. I have a few colored albums and a number of picture discs that have always been in those types; and yes, when I went to remove them, a couple did stick to sleeve and looked kinda funky. Almost splotchy discolored.

I'm not sure which ones, but I think I read both some inner and outer sleeves had that problem.

I've seen debate that it's only a concern on sleeves that directly touch the vinyl; but, since it is actually outgassing pvc effect that affects the vinyl, it is also argued that even outer sleeves not touching could leach their ill affects to record within (i.e. not just on outside).

Todays haul for RSD2020 part 2, plus a couple more:

I grabbed a copy of that Primus release, too.

Also the Bill Evans, Death Piggy, Dance Craze, Nativity in Black and The Yardbirds releases.

Lotta good stuff for this round of RSD 2020.

#5724 3 years ago

My newest upgrade, receiver pumps 110w to each of 5 speakers along the wall, subwoofer and simulates 2 channels. New speaker wire all around, new audio technica cartridge on my 80s turntable and replaced a couple of 30 year old Bose speakers with brand new Klipsch.

Its a 900sf foom and filled perfectly with sound. First thing I played was Rhapsody in Blue from the Manhattan movie soundtrack.

Oh I thought you meant protective outer sleeves, I'll have to look into this, as I'm sure I have plenty of those inner sleeves. Also this is my mini RSD mini haul. Hi Tide Groove is a really good funk/soul comp!

Digging the residents!

I guess I'm talking about some inners and some outer sleeves.

Thee picture discs used to come in those harder plastic sleeves...no inner/outer; just the one.

I remember having library records that would be in heavy plastic outer sleeves too. I'm wondering if those were pvc.

I'm not quite sure which original to the lp inner plastic sleeves were pvc, honestly.

#5728 3 years ago

I picked up a NIB Nostradamus Judas Priest box set three years ago, 4 lp? Anyway, each record was in those thick rubbery and stinky clear sleeves. The sleeves left mottled water spot like Mark's all over the disks. They sound fine but I put them in poly lined paper. I tried gently cleaning one but no go, it definitely was a chemical change to the vinyl, now I'm worried that they are slowly degrading, as stated above.

That sounds VERY much like what I had experienced too. Yeah, hopefully it doesnt get any worse now that they are in new sleeves.

Again, this is all from what I've read and when I told my record dealer of that similar thing, he immediately said yep, it was from pvc sleeve...but I never thought to ask if he has seen album continue to degrade after the fact.

That's awesome

Yeah, pretty sure that's the heavy plastic style with the tuck in flap I was thinking of. Not sure how many are pvc or not. I admit, I have a number of them in the sleeve like that.

I wonder if maybe I should separate them out and like put record in a modern inner sleeve and store original one separate from record. I couldn't ever bring myself to not keep original of course.

#5734 3 years ago

Yeah, I would not let them touch the vinyl, as an outer sleeve sure. My Sabbath volume 4 repress was packaged in one of those with the tuck in back flap. But don't use that type as an inner sleeve.

And see, I have no idea if the newer ones are still pvc, or if they did away with that at some point and switched even those heavy ones to some form of poly or something.

Be interesting to find out from a company.

I have some newer one's as well, and it certainly feels like the same material. I'm going to be cautious and seperate them, even pulling that devo record out you could tell it was kind of stuck in place, although it doesn't seem to have done any damage... yet.

#5737 3 years ago

Anyone here collect old 78s, particularly pre-WWII ones? I really want to hear your stories and see photos of your records. I've always liked old blues, jazz, and country music, but I saw this documentary a while ago and I've been head over heels with the stuff ever since:

Hunting the backwoods of the rural south for records people have never heard before, walking knee deep through creeks with stacks of 78s, knocking on random doors of houses that aren't even on maps; all for these great, very local, very personal records -- whew. I've been listening to and collecting psychedelic, rock, metal, prog, and punk records since I was a kid, but this kind of collecting is something else entirely.

Saturday night, and radio Gonzo is back
Spinning records until...... I pass out.
First up Tangerine Dream, Thief soundtract. 1981, Michael Manns 1st film.
The album that set the sound of the 80's.

Next up the brilliant Quatermass. 1970.
A one and done band unfortunately. If you like ELP, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, and the first King Crimson album find a copy of this gem.

Tonight's beverage of choice, Fallbrook winery's Cabernet Sauvignon, not bad for a wine that's grown only 2 miles from my house.
