Quoted from dirkdiggler:

I read today on cnn ticker that vinyl has out sold cds for first time since 1986
First half of 2020 sales.
Vinyl - 232 million
Cds - 129 million

The sad thing is that even cd and vinyl combined is still a mega minority compared to digital content.

I'm completely guilty of listening to digital frequently out of convenience, but I will NEVER pay for a digital only version of movies, music, etc.

If I can't hold it, I don't want it. I do appreciate when a new vinyl comes with a bonus downloadable copy too, but I don't do the whole pay Apple a buck a song junk.

Quoted from guitarded:

Nice. I haven't cracked my copy open yet.
How does it sound?

Very nice, actually. Much better than their previous vinyl releases.

#5653 3 years ago

Yeah paying for songs suck. I signed up for a free month of Amazon music and we downloaded like 2000 songs onto my phone. I then bought a Bluetooth converter for my old pioneer amp for $30. Shuffle does the trick when we shoot pool as my wife likes new pop and dance music and I like all kinds of rock. Not very often do we listen to a full album. That's more my thing when working on pinball or playing arcade games.

Listening to Ghost, A Pale Tour Named Death.
3×lp gold vinyl, pretty darn good sound for a bootleg.
Nice packaging, comes with a poster too!

The only way I'll buy digital is if it's a small artist I want to support, and it's the only way their music is available. Apple music stinks and I would never buy anything there, but I've bought some stuff from bandcamp and don't have any complaints about their platform.

Hi guys, I have a 1958 rockola I play my 45’s on. Looks great. Here is my question. Just got a bunch of 45’s in their sleeves, but they came from a smokers home. Any way to remove that smell from the sleeves? I was gonna try spreading them out in boxes and put baking soda and dryer sheets in with them. Good idea? Any better ideas? Thanks.

I take back saying NEVER buy digital only, because you reminded me I did last summer. It was for exact reason you said; apparently bit smaller artist and only way to get his music was an amazon digital download. I wasn't thrilled, but happy to have all his tunes.

First thing I did with the digital files was burn to cds and listen in car. Lol.

#5662 3 years ago

The record industry has sucked, from time immemorial. I still buy a ton of cd's, but vinyl is always the first go to.
The best I can say for this digital realm, is we can now support our favorite artists directly, merch, color vinyl, what have you.

Suggestions please for a new turntable.

I had a very nice Technics linear tracking turntable that gave up the ghost after almost 40 years of faithful service. I'm in the market for a replacement. I don't want to spend a wad of money, so high-end models are out of consideration. What say ye?

#5666 3 years ago

Pricepoint?

#5667 3 years ago

$400 max, but would rather like much less.

#5668 3 years ago

The obrit / U-turn stuff is great. Simple. sounds great, looks great. The mid-level one is around $400 all in (taxes / shipping / cue lever)

I may be selling one of these in practically new condition with an upgraded stylus if interested.

It's fully manual though which takes getting used to. THere's just very little out there for automatic turntables these days.

#5669 3 years ago

I would look around your area for a good tech and buy a used / serviced unit at that price you will get waaaaay more for your money than anything available new.

#5670 3 years ago

PIL Album.
Early afternoon spin, Japan pressing with OBI and insert, sounds like new, the Japanese take very good care of thier vinyl.

The eagle has landed!
Just got back my Kenwood Model nine G. Bought it partly working relatively cheap, took a chance, my stereo guy fixed and serviced it.

Sounds great with my 1978 Sanyo turntable.

Had to have something new to celebrate getting the Kenwood back. So on the way home stopped in at Spin Records in Carlsbad and picked these up.

That is LOVELY. I had one back in the early 90's, and have been feeling the pinch and need to get my current unit replaced with that model again..

What's up with that timer knob? Auto shut-off after X minutes?

#5676 3 years ago
Quoted from yancy:

It's either to set the tempo if the radio station's music isn't your taste, or to turn on the Time Circuits

#5677 3 years ago

Yep! It's a built in plain old egg timer! A few of the late 70's high end Kenwoods had them. They are often broken so be careful buying one. The timer is built of plastic, both knob and shaft. The timer overrides the on off switch, so you have to twist it and put some time on it then flick the switch.

It was a good idea, for high powered recievers, so it dosen't sit there if you forget it's on. But should have been built with stronger materials.

#5678 3 years ago

Here a close up of said egg timer! Dont be fooled by the silver paint boys and girls.... its plastic.

And The mighty Fu Manchu, King of the Road, for the WIN!!!

impressive finds....lots of my favorite bands there.

Golden age of wireless...ironic, i am awake at 3am listening to Thomas Dolby right now

Spoons..classic band from Burlington. Sandy was and is a beauty

and some quality OMD

the question is: Where was this auction, how many records? what was the winning bid?

any way you slice it, you scored

#5687 3 years ago

Just received a holy grail record!
In my top 4 albums of all time.
Blue Öyster Cult.
Secret Treaties.
Original Japan pressing, complete with Obi slip and full color fold out art/lyric sheet insert.

B.O.C.s third album, combining the dark and comic highlights of the first 2 albums. Secret Treaties was a band clicking into high gear.
A demonic swirl of ideas, atmosphere, and crushing guitar grooviness.

All together, as there was various lots, it came out to be about 165 Can. (125 US spprox) including tax and BP. About 35 albums and 15 extended singles....

Not sure it it has been covered here but...

Does anybody have good insight on outer protective sleeves?

I'm curious what people use. I know pvc is the old junk you don't want (ruins records).

I've heard odd things about mylar. I read one comment online that someone said you don't want to use mylar because it holds moisture....but that's exactly what everybody has used for years to protect comics/mags. So I don't understand that one...

I guess the biggest thing currently is that I'm trying to figure out the difference between polypropylene and polyethylene sleeves????
Many places, unfortunately, just call them poly bags and don't tell you.

I thought polypropylene ones were the nicer and stronger ones, so that's what I ordered. What I got was real thin junk that seemed more like plastic the lp would come in than the protective sleeves I had used before.

I think 3mil thickness seems to be much nicer than 2. But I'm not sure if that's needed for all material types or not...

Ok, its Friday night, and its gonna get heavy.
Were rollin with the SCOTT 370-R 1977-1979 reciever, 60 WATT. Matched with correct era SCOTT speakers.

First up the underrated Black Sabbath, DEHUMANIZER, the new two disc remaster. Disc two has live, and single edits.
The remaster sounds fantastic.

20200918_212131 (resized).jpg20200918_212131 (resized).jpg
#5693 3 years ago

Dehumanizer has such an awful reputation, but the 2 or 3 songs from it I know are pretty good.

Must be some real poop on it elsewhere!

#5694 3 years ago

I thought the same thing for 20 years, I admit I was absolutely WRONG. Its actually amazing, the new remaster brought it alive both cd and vinyl. But on the bright side it's like a new Dio Sabbath album!

#5699 3 years ago

Can't recomend this next album enough. A late career power surge! The last two Priest albums have been nothing less than stellar.

This one goes out to Levi, he knows his metal!

Judas Priest, Firepower.
The newest album, the follow up to the excellent Redeemer of Souls.
I got to see Priest 4 times on the Firepower tour. What's great is they change up the set list for each leg of the tour. Still stunning live on stage.
