Quoted from 72Devilz:

MFSL goodness! Beautifully engineered version of this classic 80’s new wave album.

Fabulous album.
I still have both of my original Yazoo albums. Vince Clarke at his finest.

As an avid collector I have multiple US and UK copies of both their albums and 12” releases and could not agree more. MOFI however really did fabulous job with this release, sounds amazing!

You have a Housemartins CD ! You must like English bands because they don’t come much more English than the Housemartins. I have quite a few Housemartin vinyl.
Paul Heaton used to drink in my local pub in Leeds.

Good eye catching that Housemartns LP! Anything 70’s through mid 90’s with connections to New Wave ends up in my ever growing vinyl collection! XTC has to be my favorite English band for sure, particularly their earlier punk-ish material!

Mail call. Took me a bit to warm up to this one upon release. I have no idea why because this album is amazing and just a small tick below Angel Dust. Another nice pressing from MOV too.

Discogs order came today! The Devo LPs are still sealed in 36 year old shrink with no saw cuts or punches. This PSB pressing is so rich and bright with perfect engineering balance from outside all the way in.

36 years was a long time to let DEVO sit silent. Doing right and playing these loud! Now Wake Up Puppet Boy!

Same for me too. I probably wouldn't have revisited it if a friend whose taste in music is impeccable hadn't pestered me to give it another chance. I guess it just wasn't what I was expecting at the time...

Lonnie Liston Smith is a beast.
[quoted image]

Yeah, I have a bunch of his records. Good stuff.

#5262 3 years ago
Quoted from stoptap:

Did it have a general release in the US ?
It is a double album with gatefold sleeve and a book with artwork, lyrics, info and the storyline of the book. It cost me $1.50 from a record fair.

Not sure, I would pick that up in a heartbeat if I saw it though based on the cover art alone.

While most are familiar with the jangly folk-punk of the Self titled debut, their follow up came in the mail yesterday. Hallowed ground was actually recorded at the same time As the debut and the songs were written while Gordon gano was in high school. An unheralded masterpiece. Of course, “country death song “ is a story like no other.

lol, I had that devo betamax and carried it around from apartment to apartment for 15 years, never had a betamax, eventually gave it to another devotee.

Beta was the better video format (better than VHS) I still have beta equipment (pic) in my system. Best thing about beta was that you could rent VHS and DVD material that was "copy guarded" and wouldn't copy to a VHS machine and copy to beta no problem. Got 100's of old factory movies on beta (including all the old Phantasm's) and they still play great. A couple years back I copied all four seasons of star trek "Enterprise" from borrowed DVD's to beta, you cant tell em' from the originals.

Still on the subject of obsolete formats, anybody (besides me) still got an 8-track deck tied into their home system?

Beta stereo concerts (at the time) also sounded far better than VHS. IMO. (:

New cartridge day! I liked the Nagaoka MP-110 so much I decided to upgrade to the MP-150. Can’t wait until it’s broken in, because it sounds fantastic right now straight out of the box.

MOFI arrivals from Discogs today, currently spinning the engineering masterpiece Breakfast In America to see if this MOFI stands up to my original pressings. So far the vinyl is super quiet and a bit brighter than the original pressing with plenty of low end. B-52’s is up next to be judged against my original 1979 pressings as well. Good listening ahead!

Here’s my rack of obsolete analog equipment, I still plug in some 8 track mix carts my parents made back in the early 70’s for old time sake, brings back fond memories of laying in the bed of the cab over camper, looking out the window pretending I was flying as my parents drove us across the Central Valley of Ca on our way to the mountains to camp! Is your cart machine a changer?

Love me some good ol James Brown!

#5274 3 years ago

Yes it is. It starts you out on cartridge 1 track 1, goes thru the 4 tracks, then switches to cart 2 track 1, and on and on. You can advance it thru the carts or tracks manually. It stops at the end of cart 5. Ive got a couple extra magazines I can load up for quick changes.
I see you have a reel to reel, I have one as well (pic) I always liked those for first recordings like live shows off the radio and programs like the "Beatles at the Beeb" and the "Lost Lennon tapes" then later the material can be copied to cassette or 8-track (and later, CD) if needed. Also, every time I ran across an old bootleg LP that I didn't want to keep or that I couldn't purchase Id put it on R to R. I have quite a few factory albums on R to R, as well as about 400/500 8 tracks.

I’ve never seen a consumer cart changer before, that is awesome! I used to record lots of club mix shows off the radio with my R2R and vinyl using the dbx type ][ NR before I discovered Hi-Fi recording using my VHS. I have several R2R machines, 2 of these Teacs, an Akai 4 track and this Tascam machine I saved from a recycle pile at a local high school. I just need to properly align the heads and resolder a couple sockets on the backplane...... yeah, I have a little problem with old tech but I see I came to the right place!

A buddy of mine is selling his TEAC A-3440, I'd love to pick it up but I've got too much gear already. My dad brought a Sony TC-630D home with him from Vietnam so I grew up fiddling around with that. He still has it.

Fond memories.

#5278 3 years ago

Loving the old gear. I haven’t even been able to bring myself to listening fo my cassette deck.

I’m very interested in the B52s comparison Is MOFI worth it?

They did a good job with this version. Compared to my 2 original copies the MOFI version is definitely more crisp and punchy, the bass riffs are tight and clean. Rock Lobster suffers a little bit as it is a little hot and being the last track on side A doesn’t help either but if I recall it is also hot on the original pressings as well so it is probably related more to the source than vinyl engineering. Definitely worth a pick up if you are a 52’s fan!

I’ve got a ton of tools to dial it in (some of them I even understand how to use!) but thank you Don. My tonearm only allows for minimal adjustments, not sure if that’s good or bad. This cartridge sounds incredible though, I’m shocked at the bang for your buck you get from Nagaoka. I was thinking of spending much more but decided to put that into the speaker fund and get this guy, great decision so far.

Bought that thing back in the 70s with all the other "anal" stereo paraphernalia!
I still have my Radio Shack sound pressure meter I used to setup the equalizer.
