Quoted from littlecammi:

That green camouflage finish isn't working. I can still see the cabinet. Maybe if you put it outside among some bushes?

lol, that's minwax "green tea" stain, wouldn't probably use it again, because it ended up somewhere between camo and chalkboard.

Record collections are a lot less cool when your friend asks you to help him move.

Quoted from guitarded:

That’s what I thought too. There were some shelves that sort of locked them in so they wouldn’t spill over. He put blankets on the piles and some really lightweight aluminum shelves ontop of that and everything stayed put. I was pretty impressed. I thought he was going to ruin a bunch of them trying to transport them like this.

So with my wealth of corona quarantine free time I built a cabinet for my excess vinyl. I used the single plywood sheet plans that have been floating around forever.[quoted image]

Extra thumbs up for Friend or Foe - the Grump.

Your wall is a time machine, G - OST, RH - OST, AA - KOTWF, DM - SGR, TD - GAOTW, TC - CR, FGTH - R, Y - UAE, TT - SM(UK Cover), BC - IABC all great.

What is the one that I missed? looks a little like FGTH - WTTP from this angle.

Yeah that looks like a nightmare, that's why I try to keep it quality over quantity. I suppose the quality part is in the eye of the beholder though. I have maybe 500 or so records, and if I had more time and wanted to deal with it, I'd pair it down quite a bit.

Stuart Leslie Goddard has made an influence. Kings was a highlight, along with Friend or Foe in the 80s. Dirk, his debut , holds strongest over time. Ant music for sexpeople, sexmusic for ant people. No drugs, no alcohol....just sex, sex and sex. Jamie lee Curtis. And then mental health issues. Not a regular listen, but puts me back in high school.

Big country - the crossing
Tears for fears - the hurting. Original cover. One of greatest debut albums of all time

FGTH -wTTPD not there but in collection.

How did you secure them ?

#5170 3 years ago

Where is the vinyl?! (:

#5171 3 years ago

Its a suspended ceiling, a framework designed to hold 2' X 4' tiles. by tweaking it a little bit, I was able to end up with 4' X 1'-1/2" spaces perfect for dropping in 4 covers (or 2 gatefold covers) per space..There are also some flush mounted lights and 6 speakers up there.
The records are in their inner sleeves and packed away, although many aren't in the best of shape, mostly extras/leftovers from my record collection.

You go Angus!!

I decided to revisit my ultrasonic vinyl cleaner. I found some decent 3d print options on Thingiverse that would allow me to clean multiple albums at the same time. I pretty much started from scratch, I think the motor I have is better than the one this uses, but it was cheap. It's based on this model.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4153763

The rinse is just a Tupperware container and I manually spin it around. I feel like this is the weakest point. I've seen people do a sink rinse before the distilled water rinse, but we have really hard water. i think I will add a 2nd rinse station for the next batch.

The dryer is some left over flooring hacked together with a PC case fan. I'm moving the same rotating motor from the cleaner. I wish I spent a little more time planning, 15 more minutes and this hack prototype would have been nice. I may look into a more powerful fan. I'm not sure if I'm seeing water spots, residue from the cleaning solution, or just wear.

So far what I've listened to has been amazing. A lot of what I'm cleaning are cheap Flea Market finds. I'm holding off on my new vinyl until I perfect the process.

This recording sounds like somebody had a micro-cassette recorder in a tube sock and has some of the most hideous singing/lyrics ever. But god dang does Beck rip on this album. Jan Hammer is pretty cool too.

Bought this the other day. Beautiful, haunting soundtrack.

I have a lot of Vangelis in my collection. It's nice they finally released the original of that.
For 20 years or more all that was available was this New World Orchestra version which was basically an orchestra covering the soundtrack
The Vangelis version is one of my all time favorites .

Kind of defeats the object having an orchestra playing a classic synthesizer soundtrack.

#5188 3 years ago

Yes. Don't know the details why it was done that way but I can only assume it was a studio decision and contractual obligations perpetuated it.
I listen to the vangelis version pretty regularly.

I don’t listen to much trip-hop anymore, but when I do I reach for this. Pretty intense, beautiful haunting as was said above for the Blade Runner soundtrack.

I almost listened to that the other day but as I was flicking through my collection to find it I got distracted by a Gary Numan album I hadn’t listened to for ages.
Must give Dummy a listen next week. The Theremin is beautiful throughout that album.

Nothing wrong with getting distracted by Gary Numan. I need to get some on vinyl....why did I buy all those CDs? Speaking of CDs have any you guys sold your CD collection? I have over 2000 and would love to dump them and use the proceeds for more vinyl.

#5192 3 years ago

Nah, keep your compact discs. I really struggle trying to justify buying an album of something I have on CD. And I have about 1000 CDs. Cassettes =Trash. But CDs are worth keeping. I don’t buy CDs anymore but still a viable format.

Plus you can’t sell them for anything

#5193 3 years ago

Blasphemer!

#5194 3 years ago

Some of the stuff I have on CD could not be replaced with vinyl. Some of the box sets I purchased are amazing.

It really was a terrible medium. I appreciate it's importance, but I have no intention of ever revisiting it.

I have a large Numan vinyl collection. Vinyl and the old analogue synthesizers are a match made in heaven.

Quoted from Chisox:

Well, not exactly... I've been working to thin my CD collection down to the stuff I want to keep, can't replace, can't get on vinyl, etc. I'm starting from over 4000 shooting for no more than a 1000. The record stores around me aren't always buying CDs but they've been pretty keen on the first few boxes I've brought in - trade for vinyl mostly. One guy commented, "I knew you had pretty wide tastes but this is ridiculous." (and then he ended up taking half the box)

I've also dropped a few boxes of CDs at Goodwill I know will never sell; somebody is probably finding things on the shelf there that has them scratching their head.

In the process, I've found a number of CDs with disc rot. Some will still play but it's evident they won't for much longer.

#5199 3 years ago

I haven’t thrown mine out! There was that period between 1982-1985 when cassettes were my format of choice

I hooked up a tape deck to my sound system last year, but that proved to be a waste of time. I mean, why?

#5200 3 years ago
Quoted from Shredso:

I much preferred them to CDs.

Obviously not pre-recorded stuff. Or at least 95% of it...but if you had quality gear, you weren't missing much.

Always been a Taper, though. Always had at least a great recording deck and a real nice playback unit. I have shows that are 30+ years old that still sound great.
