Quoted from Pin_Fandango:

PayPal equals horrible fees and exchange rates. You will not get USD funds in your Canadian bank, instead PayPal will exchange the monies to the current rate plus 3% which is atrocious and then transfer to your CAD account. You will lose $400-800 in fees and exchange when doing a few K dollar transaction. Friends and family or not, the exchange is horrible.
If you are exporting I would recommend to open an usd account with your bank (free with RBC and can be done from your phone) and have the buyer do a wire transfer to your account. You will then have USD funds for your next pin, $25 usd fee for you when you receivd the funds.
This is great as you will have USD for your next purchase
If the buyer is hesitant to pay, and if you know people in the hobby you can have the buyer reach out to them for references, ideally from a well established pinside member.

Tip, if you do want to use PayPal: you can change your PayPal account currency settings to default to USD. Then you can deposit that money to a USD account at your bank, without incurring PayPal's exchange rates.

Quoted from Edster:

Can't you just keep the money in your Pay Pal account as US balance and use it to buy US stuff in the future? Just don't cash it out. If it's not a huge amount of cash you're bound to buy something in the US ie parts in the near future no?

This is what I do and it does work, as lately as this week. My account balance shows me how much money I have in USD and how much in CAD. When I make a payment in USD, I select for the money to come from my PayPal balance, which is defaulted to USD.

Another trick after setting the PayPal default to USD is to attach a USD credit card to your PayPal account (BMO offers one to Canadian customers) and have PayPal bill USD to that card, or choose a CAD credit card that doesn't charge currency conversion fees (BRIM Financial and Rogers have one, I think).
