got an email from a distro tday that I had contacted a month ago
I emailed him back to see what the .zip file he sent me was about and he kindly wrote back that it wasnt him that sent it and everyone on his address list had gotten the same and he told me not to open it
Well it was too late, I extracted the file and there was a .vbs file after extraction
I read his return email and quickly deleted the .zip and the .vbs isnt anywhere that I can see in my files
feeling Stupid can anybody relate or chime in here? thanks :/

Yeah it was an account take over and list malware spam hack. Run your AV and don’t trust random downloads from anyone.

Yeah, I received it, but quickly deleted it. Thought it was weird since I don't remember buying anything from anyone that could have my e-mail, but who knows...

Ouch...you should provide more information like what type of computer this is on (i.e. Mac or Windows). Then provide the version of operating system it is running. I am sure there is someone here on pinside that could provide better steps than myself.

If this is a Mac, you might be in the clear.

I would refrain from rebooting your computer until you feel comfortable with doing so and after completing other steps. Rebooting the computer might trigger a script that was installed.

First thing I would do is backup the computer, so you do not lose any important files.

If you are on windows I would run any antivirus software you have installed with a full system file check. In addition I might run windows file check utility to ensure all of the windows files are up to date and that none have been changed.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

Make sure you keep track of any steps you take.

Good luck.

Is the AV up to date? Whatever you downloaded definitely was something you don't want.
