Good Mornin', Guys!

Curious where the 365 Voltans are? Would love to see pics as well.

I'm actually fortunate enough to have one. Paid top dollar for it of course. After I paid the guy he asked if I wanted to know what he paid for it. I immediately said, "Absolutely NOT!", as I knew he found it in some old ladies basement. She probably paid him to take it out. Kind of a messed up question I thought. lol

Typical fade, but not real bad. Backglass is great, other than where the lockbar rubs it. At some point I'm gonna pull those out of my old Ballys and round those corners off. Playfield is VERY nice!

Most of my photos are on the drive in my old tower. Lost the video card, so I'm gonna have to address that at some point. Also got tagged by a hacker with some ransomware, so lost a lot of my photos. POS hackers! Hate those MFrs!

Here's a couple I have of it. Let's see the others if they're out there.

Have a GREAT weekend, guys!

I got one. Have had it for about 20 yrs. Same rub mark on the BG and typical fade of cabinet paint. Lots of scratches on CAB too. One of my slingshot plastics is chipped. PF in decent shape as is rest of BG. In my permanent collection. Great looking game but just average player. Kinda boring after a while. Wish it had chimes. I know of another collector who has 2 of them in storage in South Dakota/Minnesota, but he lives in So Cal now.

I'll try to post some pics later after the niner game

There is one at INDISC. The Banning California collection. John has over 700 pins. It was in the classics match play tournament thurday.

Did one a few years ago. There is probably a whole thread about it but here is the gallery.

Please note that the spinners are not original, I replaced them with spinners from a WMS Flash.
Very appropriate, I think.
At one point in time I had BLY Voltan and WMS Flash and Stern Lightning
all lined up in a row in my garage back in Bakersfield.

I’m the MN/Dakota guy. I have one. The other was traded to a guy in PA.

What I’m more interested is the proto/sample that was up for sale on pinside years ago. It was parts but could be built back. It’s in the classifieds archive. I reached out to the OP and they had no details of who bought it.

Anyone have one with a AS-2518-51 sound board? They are known to exist (or have existed) and I’d love to compare the sound package and get the code.

If you’re lucky enough to have 1013 you have the one that was in the Bally lunchroom. I have that on authority of a former Bally employee.

#14 4 years ago

I have an NOS backglass that I bought over a year ago. I also have a fully populated playfield from a buddy. So I’m gonna “make” a game from the parts. Might be my only shot.

More info on my game history. (Ser#: 1176)
I got it from Gene Lewin (an operator) in LA/Orange county in late 90s
Bought it along with a Fireball II, for about $1800 (including taxes) for the pair.

I remember his column in Play Meter Magazine; "Gene's Gudgements". His thoughts usually conflicted with Roger Sharpe's "Critic's Corner" column.

#17 4 years ago

Gene is also a pretty darn good pinball player.
I remember many of time, we would be bidding against each other
at some of those monthly Orange County Super Auctions in the late 90s,
back when they would have 100+ pinball machines up for auction and
one could get a Addams Family or Twilight Zone for <$3K and a Banzai Run for about $800

It appears that pinside photos eventually are purged. Here's the photos from the sample game sale.

At the time, that was quite a lot of dough, was not a bargain by any means,
But I was determined to obtain every D. Christensen game,
and I knew Voltan was not likely to come across my path again.

Yep! Would love to as well. Dave is absolutely my favorite artist. I'll never have all of his games, unless it's perhaps a few at a time. lol

That is a beautiful looking machine.

I was able to play the Indisc game this past weekend. I thought it was a fun game to play.

I’ll have to wait a year to play it again.

Enjoy a rare game.

Very nice, Joe
Congrats
But to make it perfect you should consider to fit it with original Bally-Legs (dark-grey or almost black) with a sharp-edged, rectangular bottom-plate.
(I learned about this in the toppic "Do you have the right legs on your pin" )
Also Bally used only yellow rubbers for the flippers back then.
And I hope you know I say this out of sympathy and not to criticize you

His was a custom restore by the best in the business. It was not meant to be 100% faithful to factory standards. Look up the HEP thread to follow the build.

Correct! The spinner art is better than the original too!

#32 4 years ago

Waaaaay better!! I think the original is the same one from Eight Ball. It needs a custom spinner to match the theme definitely. Nice.

#33 4 years ago

Check my avatar......! My Voltan is a loving restoration, but I decided not to redo the cabinet. I'm fine with the faded cabinet paint, at least for now.

I bought the machine in 2012 after looking for one for years. Like some of the others posting, Dave Christensen is my favorite pinball artist, and I had as a goal to try and obtain all of his games. Voltan is his masterpiece. The humor and weirdness of the art makes me laugh everytime I play the game.

Mine came with a very decent backglass-- a few minor scratches-- and a blown-out play field. Prior to finding my game I had obtained a spare playfield off eBay, and sent that out to the incomparable HSA for restoration. They did an amazing job, as always. I did a playfield swap in 2016, and the game is bolted to the floor at this point.

The game gets knocked in some circles as a poor player, but I find it challenging, and it has been a popular game in our league and tournaments.

Also, curious to see how many have bought the CPR plastics for this game? I ended up getting two sets-- the first with art muddier than I would accept. CPR sent me a second set-- quite a bit better, but definitely quite a few steps below the originals in color, detail, and crispness of line.

See some pics below of my game-- a few before and a few after restoration.

That is why i ended up using spinners from a WMS Flash parts game.

I did end up obtaining all the D.Christensen games including Future Spa
(along with a NOS Future Spa Playfield and Both the EM & SS models of Mata Hari) .
Actually the only game of D.C.'s that i did not get was the Fireball Home model, I just settled for getting the home model Backglass.

I bought 2 sets as well. One simply to have spare pieces, the other for a project that I have yet to start. The blues on the 2 sets I received is definitely off a bit. Not as dark and rich. And yes, the lines are not as crisp.

I'm sure they'll be doin' the backglasses as well.

Currently it looks as if they're in the test cut phase on the playfields.

My concern is that these machines are so rare, with only 365 made, there's now gonna be a lot of guys making Voltans from scratch. Though I still think the originals will retain a special place among us that love them.

I preordered 2 playfields as well. Again, simply to have a spare and one for my project. I just wish that they were a bit better with order confirmations.

#38 4 years ago

Now that they removed the preorder sign up page, they say they will still honor all those that preordered. But they still make me really nervous that they will have one for me even though I signed up early.

Just asking opinions, I have an original NOS glass and a fully populated original playfield. But no cabinet. I will have to recreate the body and head. Am I “making” a game... or am I replacing a cabinet? Interesting. Could see both ways.

you are replacing a cabinet.

If the ball does not touch it... then it is just the extras IMHO. At least how I have always through of it.

I got mine way back in the day through the Pinball Trader, when people used to actually snail mail real photos back and forth to decide if they liked the condition or not. I always knew that I wanted one and when the ad popped up in “the good stuff” I called on it right away. It was a guy in California, he originally had wanted to trade it in the ad for a TFTC, but I made him a cash offer that would enable him to get one and he was good with that. He sent pics to confirm the verbal condition description and everything looked good when I got them. It was a bit of a leap of faith, I had dealt with the guy on some small stuff before, but this was a lot of cash, I had never shipped a game before and he was on the opposite side of the country. He knew a couple of people that I knew though and I figured that I would not get another chance so I went with it. We agreed on half up front and half on delivery. It was a nervous few weeks until the game showed up, but it all worked out. I took the game up to the York Show a few years ago and got a bunch of offers, one guy even had me paged over the loudspeaker to track me down lol.....it’s arguably one of the greatest pieces of pinball art in my opinion, I never get tired of looking at it. I’ve got a few “accessory pieces” that go with it, but I’ll save that for another time. Mine is number 1050....

Making some progress, had an extra Alltek MPU and driverboard laying around and put it in Voltan and now it’s booting. Problem is coils aren’t working but I did find a burnt connector on power supply that I am going to redo.. Game boots ball doesn’t kick out, pop bumpers don’t work, computer controlled lighting is out too.. Check all fuses and they are good. Looks like this powersupply needs work..

Everything is working now except the computer controlled lighting. I am sure one of the bridges is bad on the power supply. Anyone know which bridge controls the computer controlled lighting? Solenoid is left and lighting is right I believe.
