Ok, I just HAD to knock one out, and it got me back in the mood.
F-89J in 1/72nd, straight from the Academy kit. Airbrush isn't set up right now so it's all aerosol and brush.
No weathering because I'm not in the mood.

I have to agree, most early jets done up in natural aluminum look better to me un-weathered.

Any of you remember around 1962 when Revelle had a national modeling contest ? I won the local contest in the "under 12 year old division" back then. My model got shipped to California to be entered in the nationals. I never saw or heard anything about it again.

the real cars and bike in the photos are cool ... you should make some models of them
seriously, awesome talent. i used to do it when i was a kid and those have nearly got me inspired to try it again.

Same here, this is a cool thread. Heck I didn't even realize models were still being made anymore to be honest with you.

Back in the 60's I almost built model cars daily, neighborhood kids got together and built at each others house, almost like parents getting together to play cards on week ends.A little off topic but some things rarely seen anymore, people painting houses, washing car in drive and what in the world is a picnic table?
Mostly into figure style models lately for the past umpteen years.A few in the mix are actually statues but not many.

More of the Junkyard Impala... I get asked about the rust allot, it is indeed real rust, not paint. The only paint on this is the interior green and the white on the body. The side windows are from scratch and the trunk was filled with epoxy to simulate standing water since the trunk no longer closes completely. The grey primered spots on the body have real bondo putty in them. It can be seen allot better in person.

OK. I have to know this: How do you procure and apply real rust to a model? That has to be one of the coolest modeling tricks I have ever seen.

Here is a borrowed pic of yours for any body just stumbling into this thread.

Do any of your other gray hairs remember that modeling design contest thing GM had going on in the 60s? You know; The contest where kids sent in their scratch built futuristic cars to GM. It was GM's way of identifying future talent to hire for design.

I have tried Googling for pictures of those old models that showed up in Popular Mechanics and other rags of the same sort and have hod no luck.

Allot of people don't know that they are still being produced simply because you just don't see them everywhere anymore like you did 30+ years ago. Sadly the same with pinball.

We did the same growing up in the 80's. A bunch of us at a time would spend the night at each other's houses and would group build until after midnight. We would all bring our paints so that whatever color we wanted, we had. Lol good times for sure.

What I do is take steel wool, acid, and water and let all three of those soak in a container out in the sun. It then breaks down into a paste. I let that dry to the consistency that I want and then I apply it by hand.

#60 7 years ago

I used to build lots of model kits as a kid. Especially military ones but did some cars too. I like the Tamiya Japanese kits the best. More expensive than most but worth the extra money for the quality and detail.

Here's an unusual kit I picked-up at a trade show that I bet no one on here has ever built.

A Nissei plastic injection molding machine.

I remember when I would pay $1.95 for a AMT car kit. Nowdays, they are $20.00 and up at Micheals. Go to Amazon and search AMT model car. You will choke on the prices.

I have heard about those good old days from the older builders in our club. In my day kits were $6.99. Unfortunately for AMT their kits these days are some of the worst on the market second to Lindberg. Thin polystyrene and the re-use of 40+ year old molds in need of serious rework plague many of their kits leaving Revell and others to be the best in terms of American made kits. Actually, I can't call them American made because they are all made in China now lol. I stopped building American made kits a little over 2 years ago due to lack of variety, quality, and cost. I now solely build Japanese, German, and Italian made kits which are far more superior. Yeah, I pay more but I get what I pay for with them. Crisp molded parts, excellent fit and finish, outstandingly detailed parts, high resolution decals, etc. At Michaels you can take advantage of their 50% off coupon on sundays, the same can be done at A.C. Moore. At Hobby Lobby you can take advantage of the 40% off discount every day of the week. Models in general are high on Amazon so I stay away from there. The best deals on kits are on Ebay and many other online retailers.

This is my 1957+ Porsche 356 1600 Speedster that I built about 2 years ago. This is the pride and joy of all my builds and I took home allot of show wins with it. This kit was absolutely amazing!!! It is a Japanese Fujimi Enthusiast kit. Tons of detail with tons of parts at over 250. Color is Factory Porsche silver metallic topped with PPG 2 part automotive clear. All factory chrome was stripped and re-chromed. Multiple photo etched metal parts used through out the interior, exterior, and engine bay. I also added valve stems, engine wiring, and brake lines with aluminum fittings, bare metal foil trim, hand made seat belts with hardware. I'm probably forgetting more, but it was two years ago after all. This is the first kit that I've done that has a removable engine. pretty neat.

Not as hard as you think, mostly just dabbing on layers of various shades of browns, reds, black, etc.... It's all in the color choice, sequence, and brush technique. I'm sure there's some how-to videos on youtube these days.

Another cool one to look into is an NMM finish. Meaning non-metallic metal. A chrome effect without using any metallic or chrome paints.

My and my father's hobby...

That's what I like to hear!! I have always said that this should be a mandatory bonding activity between every father and son at least once in their lifetime. My father grew up modeling and passed the hobby on to me. I've been modeling ever since, 33 long years. I also owe it to him for starting my obsession with cars, horsepower, and speed.

Ohhhhhhhhhh you were trying to post pics!!!! Is that O guage? That steam engine is beautiful. I did trains in HO and N guage in my teens, eventually I started chasing girls and got a drivers license and car. I sold off all of my train gear to buy go fast car parts. Always said that I'd get back into it one day. The advances in technology and products nowadays is amazing, things I would have never imagined seeing being made or sold.

#72 7 years ago

I think those are the bigger ones that you can sit on and ride. The steam locos are probably live steam. That # 1600 locomotive is just mind-boggling. I can't even believe that thing could be real, I just keep staring at it in disbelief. Beyond awesome.

It's two trailing axles short of an Allegheny, but a C&O compound Mallet (2-6-6-2) is returning to service on the Western Maryland this summer:

It will be the largest operating articulated steam locomotive in the world until UP finishes the Big Boy next year.

This guy is the king, Brick Price, makes them for James Cameron, Nasa, the best of the best:

Hired him to build miniature hotels and casinos I could shoot to scale in and then drop in the floor for a flooring company campaign (cause renting casinos and hotels to shoot overhead in is implausible. Cool stuff.

Got inspired by the OP so spent a bit of time finishing off the Dodge Sidewinder i had partially completed ages ago. This is painted in Alclad prismatic sapphire to deep blue UV. Bloody camera picks up every little bit of dust
Military vehicle still needs some extra weathering but mostly completed.

I think a lot of you missed the significance of my earlier post.

It's a model kit of the machine that makes the model kits!

lol

Picked up a studio scale Buck Rogers Thunderfighter from EchoBase Models a while ago...good quality resin cast kit. Hopefully I can do it justice and post some photos.

Having been in the plastics industry for 30+ yrs, I find myself wanting to build the injection molding machine kit for some reason! Nice find!

Not really a scale model of any particular engine. I got the plans off the internet, and have been building it at work during my free time.

Almost done!

Pretty soon we'll try to start it for the first time.

I'm currently building a little boiler to run some of my scale model steam engines.
Almost done with the boiler itself. Now I am making a whistle for it.

Took measurements from a full sized steam whistle, drew it up on Autocad.
Now I need to scale it down and make drawings. Then the fun begins!

I just finished the USS Saratoga and gave it to my dad for Veterans day. He was aboard it in yhe late 60's. I trimmed off the molded solid railings and replaced with photoetch. Also the radars and guides.
So far I only do ships just to keep it limited or else I would be buying up everything at the store.

I got 17 plane models for myself. Some of them had Eduard photoetch kits inside as well.

I also got this nice air compressor for $100. It is used but seems to work fine. I can't believe it is as quiet as it is, I had a clunky loud one before.

Also a few new or hardly used air brushes.

My job being a prototype / R+D machinist, I get to do small jobs for myself when I can fit them in.
