I wouldn't use an 'open-grain' wood like oak if your planning on painting anyway. A tighter grained would like Maple would be better the originals are more likely popular. Also check dimensions, maybe 1 1/8" depending on the game. As a personal mod on my EB Deluxe, I decided to try natural Oak which works with this theme IMO.
