Quoted from Frippertron:

Claude Fernandez liked to rip Ritchie designs back in the day and pepper them with just a hint of something different. Flash=Skateball, Black Knight=Flash Gordon. Kaminkow ripped Ritchie too ! High Speed=Secret Servive. Imitation is the highest form of flattery I guess?

Actually, Secret Service is way more like Flash than High Speed. And another Flash-with-tweaks that hasn't been mentioned yet is Fathom.

Flash is probably the single most 'influential' design in all of pinball.

Eight Ball Deluxe - Sharkey's Shootout.

Quoted from sven:

I owned both High Speed and Secret Service, and Secrete Service is a lot like High Speed: both by design and software alike. It's an improved version though, I think. It has more shot-variety and more rules.

Right, but geometricaly, if you look at the placement of shot entries, targets, shooter entry and the third flipper, it's Flash with habitrails on. Flash was designed to be no slouch.

Quoted from jfre81:

Right. I remember Steve Ritchie talking about how in the late 70s/early 80s, any game that deviated too much from the two lower flipper/inlane standard structure would fail commercially, therefore that became a standard.

The trick is in how to make a fan layout not look like a fan layout. Your shot entries and guide angles will be dictated by their position relative to the bottom flippers, but you can still place them in unexpected positions, and after that have some freedom to dictate what those shots can actually do. With lateral thinking you can introduce shots that may be functionally similar to the norm in where they ultimately take the ball, but you can lay down and dress up the pathways and introduce more branching ones so that it looks and feels more novel. That's the JPop method when he's properly firing on all cylinders.
