I've been using MAME on the PC for years. I prefer the GUI version instead of the command line. While I don't have 12,000 ROM's I do have a few hundred.

I put it on all the old PC's I buy up and reload for needy kids/families. It'll run on an old Pentium II or above just fine.

Maybe after tomorrow when my vacation starts I'll put it up and some other things on a private FTP that would be for Pinside members only. I rarely used the total 40Gb/s upload side of my bandwidth. At full download speed the overhead is only about 5Gb/s.

I think I'd know what to do with 200 games, let alone 12000. I guess the answer to that would be anything I wanted. lol

I have a donkey kong 1981 cocktail cab I am going to turn into a mame machine sometime soon, when I get some free time. I have a complete mame rom "goodset" but I would pair it down to just a few hundred games suitable for a cocktail machine. Then later I want to build a full blown mame standup with 4 player controls, trackballs, spinners etc etc and have a full mame rom collection in that bad boy.

I cant decide what I would do - the 46+" TV LCD style like the video or a regular full cabinet thats all self contained - now with LCD prices being fairly cheap - I guess size does matter - but it becomes less transportable if you have the full tv set up console and all that - but it does look pretty bad ass....Damn where are my flipper link parts - still not here

I have a pretty rockin' MAME cabinet. I have a 2-player setup, a trackball, a spinner, a 4-way stick, and I illuminated all my buttons with LEDs. I used a 27" TV with a component connection (closest you'll get to arcade quality without a true arcade monitor), so it looks fantastic. I've attached a crappy pic, but you'll get the idea. Obviously the TV image is washed out due to the longish exposure of the picture.

I used an old NFL Blitz cabinet for mine. It feels rock solid and I made the control panel out of MDF.

Also, I highly urge you to use the command line version of MAME and then use a good front end launcher. It's SO much better than a GUI version and a whole heck of a lot more customizable.

That's a really cool machine jar155. I'm super jealous. I imagine the command line version is much better if you are going to put it in a cabinet like that instead of just running it on your PC.

Anyone played one of these? I was thinking about getting one of these, since I am not a whiz at setting up a mame.

Arcade Legends is okay, but you'll actually get much better performance from MAME proper with a decent setup. MAME is processor demanding, so you won't need to spend much on a video card. That's good news, because it means you can build a great MAME rig pretty cheaply.

See my posting about what Wolfman has on his Xxxxxmas buying trip. He is going to have a bunch of empty cabinets that could be used for making up a MAME system.

Jar155 Nice set up - what do you estimate that setup to cost you, and what type of hours do you think you have sunk into the build - I'm on the fence of whether to have it built or partially built by someone like MameRoom.com or to start from scratch.

Well i have a mame cabinet in my gameroom.
You can see pics over here http://www.baron-shadow.nl/blog/ and some on my site http://www.baron-shadow.nl where you also can see my pins.

The mame cabinet is running with GameEx as a frontend and i have over 5000 games on it. It's not finished yet i'm still waiting for better artwork.

I just got my GP2X Wiz a half hour ago. I already have MAME running on it with all my hundreds of ROM's. So cool. Also have the SNES emulator running. Gotta let it charge and load up more emulators. I know this isn't a console but if you want something for on the go it's a super toy. Not to mention it plays all the video formats including Xvid.
