Todays hot tip: stop reading the twitter feed of he who shall not be named.

5x more deadly than flu with no vaccine or anti viral treatment. Sorry Grandma! My bad! Hope everything works out, heading to play pinball.

    Apologies for being inflammatory

Everyone has there own situation and should handle it how they believe is the best for them and there situation.

I have children so I will always lean on the side of caution first. Then assess the situation at hand and try to make the best decision.

Complete opposite of my pinball machine purchases.

Well I'm glad this thing doesn't seem to dislike children that much; which is nice.

    Quoted from Trogdor:

As fervent a discussion as this is generating here demonstrates, show organizers- especially MGC- have a big problem. Already what 10 cases in Illinois?. Doesn’t matter how illogical it may be, people that make show profitable will stay home. Die-hards will be there, grandparents with the family will not. Youth soccer games- in WI with 1 cured case - people already aren’t shaking hands, they’re going to a gaming classic to press moist buttons all day?? It doesn’t matter what news channel you listen to, Targets everywhere are selling out of gloves, masks, isopropyl alcohol.. It’s game over man. The great sit in of spring 2020 has begun. Cut losses and rebuild for next year.

I'm glad someone knows what is up with MGC 2020 and their moist buttons.

How would you propose such a show "cut losses"? Which government officials are forcing soccer games to not shake hands?

I'd kindly ask everyone to stop trying to be an expert and wait for word from the actual experts and / or show organizers before jumping to conclusions.

    I am?

Do you know my background? I'm pretty well equipped to handle situations like this and worse, and the MGC is in a fine position to handle whatever happens. I don't know if that's the case for other shows. I hope it is.

Your and other comments don't help anyone. We're set up to have an MGC in 2021. I don't know about other shows. Will you revel in their deaths? Is it a joke to you?

    Reaaaaaaal curious. No offense, Yancy.

I posted in the TPF Covid19 thread that this will most likely not be up to the organizers cancelling, it will be public officials like the Mayor of Austin who nixed SxSW. I’m following Frisco, Tx official webpage waiting for some kind of notice... nothing there yet.

    I mean, I'm joking, but am I?

Don't say this. It's still on me to do list some year!

    #113 10 months ago

Honestly - It would be better for everyone if this thread was shut down and any others like where people who have no credentials banter falsehoods and half truth. If you want to talk about the show, great. Stop talking about SARS-CoV-2! Credentialed experts take pause and speak SLOWLY about this. It is serious. No one is helping by cowboying up their ten hours of internet research. If you have 10,000 hours of training in public health epidemiology, virology, or infectious disease speak up and ask this to be closed to further speculation and dangerous half witted half truths. Just sad and yes, I am pissed. Been on Pinside a very long time and this os the only thread that has ever motivated me to speak out directly.

We can be experts on pinball and talk the talk. Do not take license to extend that to a serious public health concern. Leave it to the experts.

The journal JAMA as well as many others (PLOS family is also free) are publishing Scientific articles on both the disease (COVID-19) and the virus (SARS-CoV-2). Try reading a few. If you cannot understand the entire thing top to bottom, might not be a good idea to quarterback your ignorance.

    #114 10 months ago
    Quoted from yancy:

Take a joke. Just one, before the virus kills us all.

If you meant your statement that I was getting real nervous to be a joke, I think it was lost on me and others.

Again, believe it or not, there is a lot more expertise on my end on this topic than I'd guess many speculating online are aware of. There are reasons we haven't - yet - said anything publicly.

If you want to clearly make a joke, I'm all for it. But making it out like the people running these shows have no idea what they are doing potentially harms the whole industry and at best, that's disappointing coming from you.

    This guy gets it. ^^^^^

I was suppose to go Ultra music festival in Miami Florida March 20th, 21th, 22th. Its cancelled. Coronavirus. https://www.google.com/amp/s/wsvn.com/news/local/calle-ocho-and-ultra-music-festival-2020-cancelled-amid-coronavirus-concerns/amp/

It might not even be up to the shows organizers. The city will have the final say. Believe me ultra didnt want to cancel a muti million dollar event. The city of Miami made them.

I cancelled my trip to miami. Got all my money back on hotels, car, tickets, but I could only get a travel voucher through southwest, because I didnt have insurance. So I said screw it I'm going to Texas pinball festival. Always wanted to go there, now I am.

I will also be taking games to MGC like I do every year. Nothing is stopping me from going. But i do know of a couple people in the area with concerns and might not be going to MGC. Having said that I'm going to both shows and I will let you know how I turn out.

So, stating things like RIP TPF really help? You think this is a time to taunt show organizers, I disagree. You state my knowledge on doing this is self proclaimed.

I make a response because the level of crazy is absurd, and your response is to taunt show organizers and me directly. Do you honestly feel that this is something that is a laughing matter for any of us? If not, think about what your glib statements and realize you can do actual damage.

If you're the type of person that celebrates that, cool deal man. I'm not.

Closing shows, sporting events etc is called 'social distancing'. The UK's committee on COVID-19 decided today NOT to go this far yet. The Chief Medical Officer here is quite good for a change (i.e. not just a political appointee knowledgeless twat), and talking sense. A solid guy- Prof Chris Whitty. Well worth youtubing. Bottomline, of course go to events, and wash your hands, heh.

So, here's the thing - no show should have the full expertise to cancel by themselves. Either an official tells you that the risk level has changed, and they cause it to be shut down, or other events would happen that cause the show to no longer be viable.

Self canceling opens a pandoras box and would not be what a show would want to do.

I've been in contact either directly or indirectly with multiple levels of city and state government today, and it's a decision that would either be made together, or by them directly.

Agreed 100 times over. The news media is reporting on something that there is currently a ridiculous lack of information about, and fear gets clicks.

Perhaps the biggest damage from this is if it isn't as big of a deal as it is made out to be, then when we have a virus that is a huge problem, no one will believe the news since they've cried wolf too many times.

The “cry wolf” defense is not a defense in this situation. When it comes to pandemics, officials don’t know anything until the scientists and Doctors figure it out. In the mean time, anything government officials can do to limit the spread is not being done in vain. Societal distancing does work, especially when there is no good info on the disease or virus that cause it. This isn’t about your rights to go or not go to an event, it’s about the societal responsibility we all have to those who it can kill.

    #132 10 months ago

Regardless of news headlines, and their perceived accuracy, governments around the country and the world are taking the Covid-19 threat seriously. Major venues and events are being shuttered or canceled. Sometimes voluntarily, sometimes not. Quarantines are in effect around the world. So I mean it's not all "fake news." There is obviously some danger with coronavirus, otherwise these measures wouldn't be taken.

    Quoted from Wickerman2:

It slows stress to healthcare system. Instead of a spike, a gentle curve. So you should definitely delay getting it.

Exactly. For those that don't get it read about what is happening in Italy right now. The hospitals are over run and many who need hospital care are being told to stay home as there arent any beds or space left.

They are saying there also aren't enough respirators. I read if it continues to spread there, over 18,000 more will need care by the end of the month and the healthcare system in the north could collapse from strain and exhaustion.

Of course, it's just the flu... I mean entire countries lockdown and quarantine the entire population during cold and flu season all the time.

Here's the main problem, let's say someone goes to a show and catches the virus. Tag they are it but they are young and healthy so they don't even know they now have the virus. Then they go see their grandma, or go anywhere where there are elderly people and now they have possibly spread it to others whom it can kill. The danger with such a virus is how easily it can quickly get out of control, with this particular virus being more sinister in that people may have it and not even know it.

We had months to figure it out. We, apparently, started trying to understand it two weeks ago. The media during that time has seized on the most sensationalist headlines as it has been covered.

As I noted, it could be as bad as that. But, if it's not, the lack of trust that the media will sow in future issues could be a far bigger issue.

There are still weeks between now and when either TPF or MGC will happen. Two weeks ago people would have laughed at the thought either would be canceled due to this. In two weeks, a lot can happen.

    Waiting is the hard part.

    Quoted from DakotaMike:

So I mean it's not all "fake news." There is obviously some danger with coronavirus, otherwise these measures wouldn't be taken.

I wasn't attempting to state that there is no danger. In fact, it could be worse than we imagine. But again, the time frame is the issue here. Each day that passes will give us a peek further into what is happening and help us plan better for whatever outcome that is.

    Quoted from iceman44:

I get that you have to do due diligence but it’s all the dopey officials that are creating the BS panic

Counterpoint here is that no matter what I believe, if the mayor tells me not to run, I really don't have a choice. I, as you know, do think the governments response so far has been incredibly poor across all levels. That doesn't put me I. The place to overrule them, however.

    Quoted from iceman44:

Don’t let the panic junkies take you guys down

We won't! One way or another, I fully expect the MGC to continue on for as long as possible.

It was an observation. I added "no offense, Dan" since my comment came directly after yours, specifically so you WOULDN'T take it as some kind of personal affront. But here we are.

If that's what you intended, you're not very good at trying to do that, because you obviously don't know how measured I can be about things like this.

    Quoted from yancy:

I said your expertise is self-proclaimed. It literally is:

Which you know nothing about, but dismiss. Cool. And if people trust you, it makes it harder for everyone running shows right now.

I came in here to reply to some over the top comments that were made on the show, and ask people to not jump to conclusions. You reply by dismissing the comments as me getting nervous.

Which isn't the case. It's me trying to stay on top of the message before everyone on Pinside is suddenly in a manufactured tizzy without having the facts. I asked that people wait. I still do.

Replying to that by "resting your case" just further serves to sow doubt in my words by others.

I'm not "nervous" or whatever about this. I'm annoyed that it seems you are missing this and find it funny to keep trying to further sow doubt.

If we're talking about what the next pinball machine is, that's great, sow all the doubt you want. If we're talking about shows that have budgets in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and you're trying to dismiss people with actual knowledge, yeah, I find that frustrating.

I don't know how any other show is set up to handle this. I do know quite well how we're set up to handle this. With so many people looking to me for leadership right now, if we were truly nervous or unsure of what we are doing, it could be disastrous. You suggesting otherwise has implications to me from other people who then trust me less.

If your goal is to tear down shows, that's cool. I just think it's a weird response. It's not really a joking thing.

The Midwest Gaming Classic will have some sort of officially statement about all of this within the next 72 hours. Unless things change unexpectedly, it will not change from what I've been saying here, but we'll have some additional information I'm still working on.

    Quoted from goatdan:

Which you know nothing about, but dismiss.

At no point did I dismiss your expertise. I said it's self-proclaimed, WHICH IT LITERALLY IS. You can be a self-important loudmouth and also be correct. Even a prick like me is an expert at something.
