Quoted from Sanctionman:I wanted to share an idea I had a while back about storing my comics. I had been doing the long box thing (probably like most of you) for the better part of 40 years. They work, but they are ugly and they ended up taking up entire closets and it was kind of a pain to access them. I needed a better solution. This is what I came up with. I bough some 4 drawer lateral filing cabinets (Steelcase Model #9LF18364F) from a used office supply store for $120 each (new they go for $600- $800). It didn't matter what they looked like, because I had a local cabinet guy professionally laminate them for $200 each. I bought some handles at Home Depot. I didn't want to stress the laminate when pulling on the handles, so I mounted some particle board on the inside of the facing of the drawers. And for the dividers, I picked out the thinnest plywood they had at Home Depot. I did all the measurements ahead of time and had them do all the cutting at the store. I would estimate that all in, it probably cost me about $360 per cabinet. Each one holds about 2000 comics. Just buying the long boxes for 2000 comics could probably cost at least $150. For me, it is well worth the additional cost to have something that looks great and is easily accessible. In the final picture, the bookcase on top of the cabinets is a typical oak bookcase that I just turned on its side. It fits perfectly on top of two of the cabinets (they are 36 inches wide each). I just cut up the shelves to make the custom cubby holes. Hope that gives you some ideas.
