I've only played SM once so they are all new to me. Planning on just having fun but I'm a pretty competitive person unfortunately Any tips?
You didn't say what kind of tournament, but for my first big show tournament, my goal was to qualify for the playoffs, which I did.
If it's a head to head tournament (like a single or double elim), remember that your goal is to beat the other player, not the machine. I see some players using their usual "all or nothing" strategy, and if it doesn't come together, they have crap for points.
On IM, for example, unless my opponent is a really top player and going all out is the only chance for victory, I will usually do the boagie mode. That will give me 5 - 6 million points right off the bat. If my opponent doesn't get a decent multi or monger going, that can be enough to hold him off for the win.
