My kids are young so we play shorter games.
I would love to have a local group, but no luck.
I have a group of old friends that have exposed me to a lot of great games. We meet 1-2 times a year for a long weekend at a rental cabin and binge play.

Bootleggers - multi phase assets aquisition and resource game based on prohibition. Great "screw your buddy" game!
Five Tribes
They love pandemic and zombiecide. There are countless others I can't remember. A few guys bring tuns of games each time.

At home I have:
Munchkin
King of Tokyo
Mars Attacks (dice and cards)
Castellan (2 sets)
Run and Bones (a kickstarter set)

And the usual monopoly, life etc.

I forgot ticket to ride. My youngest loves it. It's available on iPad and he plays it all the time.

Quoted from lpeters82:

What games would you suggest to a group of fairly inexperienced gamers? I've got them to play things like Ticket to Ride, 7 Wonders, King of Tokyo, etc. They aren't going to play anything too deep, too long, too much waiting, or require too much reading. At the same time I'd like to keep pushing them with the complexity a little bit.

Munchkin is fun and they have multiple themes available to capture you interests.

Mars attacks is a simple card and dice game that's quick and fun.

Five Tibes is a little more in depth, but has a simpler layout with a mid level of "tons of pieces" as my kids call them. It is my next purchase.

Best of luck!

BPA, love your table! I just recently found this company.

I was in the local game and comic shop recently and discovered there is a local board game club! They meet once a month at a retail space about 2 miles from my house! My first day was Saturday and it was great. I played Dominion (first time) and Five Tribes (my game).

I'm at a Wed-Sun board game fest with old friends. Rental cabin, good food and games. Just a few examples here. We even went in to town and did an escape room. Great week!

Awesome!!!
Did you like Scythe?

Yes I loved it. It would be my purchase of choice if I had a group to play with.

Where did you grab Mountains of Madness? Played it yet?

It was a friends game. I didn't play it, but they did and enjoyed it.

Quoted from Azmodeus:

I am going to ask my board game question. After my set up.
I had a stroke and three brain surgeries. I cannot stress how this will change your life.
After I was recovering, and this is not over. I tried to play scrabble again.
I could not complete a single word now. It was very sobering.
I will never forget that time when I tried to play, searched my mind and came up completely empty.
(I was nearly unbeatable before.)
This was a year ago.
I am not better. I never will be...
We returned to scrabble and the game seemed to work my brain in all of the right ways.
So, my question now.
This was a great thing for my brain and my time with my fiancée Veronika.
She is the one who consoled me when I could not form a word.
What games like scrabble might be good in everyone's opinion. Must be a two player game.
I suggested we try magic she said no.

Consider other styles as well. Any game that stimulates the way you think and communicate is good for you.

I enjoy Dixit. It’s kind of an abstract art and image based game. It might just be stimulating.

Some of the fun and short games might be enjoyable.

Simple humorous card game: Exploding Kittens

Simple puzzle style game with pieces: Castellan

Definitely consider Words with Friends. It’s a scrabble style app for your phone. Play with friends any time.

The local board game club met last Saturday. I played The Captain is Dead for the first time. Very fun co-op style game, especially if you’re into Star Trek etc.
